AS+GG designs high-performance, sustainable architecture on an international scale
About us
Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture is dedicated to the design of high-performance, sustainable architecture on an international scale. The firm approaches each project with an understanding that architecture has the power to influence to aid society, advance modern technology, sustain the environment and inspire those around us to improve our world. We use an integrated design approach that emphasizes a relationship with the natural environment -- a philosophy called global environmental contextualism. This approach takes into consideration building orientation, daylighting, generation of wind power, solar absorption, and a site's geothermal properties and represents a fundamental change in the design process, one in which form follows performance. It's based on the understanding that everything within the built and natural environment is connected, and that a building's design should stem from an understanding of its role within that context -- locally, regionally and globally. This approach acknowledges the interaction among building systems and the natural environment, seeking to improve each individual system's performance. By using this principle in the design of buildings, we can create structures that not only reduce their negative environmental impact, but in some cases, virtually eliminate it altogether. AS+GG's practice includes designers with extensive experience in multiple disciplines, including technical architecture, interior design, urban planning and sustainable design. Architects also have expertise in a range of building types, including supertall towers, large-scale mixed-use complexes, corporate offices, exhibition facilities, cultural facilities and museums, civic and public spaces, hotels and residential complexes, institutional projects and high-tech laboratory facilities. The firm was founded in 2006 by partners Adrian Smith, Gordon Gill and Robert Forest. Today there are over 120 employees in offices in Chicago and Beijing.

Key Takeaways from the CITUBH Conference in London The past two days at the CITUBH Conference in London have brought together global thought leaders to discuss the future of urban development. Here are my top takeaways: 1. Sustainability is the Future A major focus of the conference was on sustainable practices. From net-zero energy skyscrapers to the increased use of mass timber in high-rise construction, the industry is moving towards reducing its carbon footprint and adopting greener building solutions. 2. PropTech and Smart Cities Smart building technology and real-time data analytics are playing a crucial role in transforming urban living. The emphasis on smart cities underscored the need for data-driven solutions to optimize operational performance and reduce energy consumption. 3. New vs. Renew: The Urban Dilemma The "New or Renew" debate was a central theme, especially in the UK. Many sessions focused on the benefits of retrofitting existing buildings to meet sustainability goals, rather than constructing entirely new ones. This approach aligns with the push for carbon neutrality and adaptive reuse. 4. Recognition for Uptown Tower It was exciting to see Uptown Tower recognized at the conference. With nominations in categories like Best Tall Building and Construction, Uptown Tower’s cutting-edge design and sustainability efforts were celebrated as a model for future high-rise developments. A fantastic couple of days of learning and networking! Looking forward to seeing how these trends shape the future of our industry. Excited to share this Newsweek update on Jeddah Tower and the growing appeal of super-tall buildings! AS+GG partners Gordon Gill and Bob Forest discuss the complexities and considerations involved in designing these tall structures. As Gordon Gill explains, "As we see the increase in density of cities around the world, going vertical becomes a viable option as land becomes scarce and more valuable. There is also, obviously, the consideration of value as it relates to views and the prominence of the building. Creating a sense of identity can, in some cases, define a district, a city, or even a country." Check out the full article below!

"Hydrogen-powered skyscraper set for Egypt’s new capital" Thank you CNN Style for showcasing AS+GG's Forbes International Tower which is set to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by powering the 43-floor office building via clean hydrogen, supplemented by solar panels on its facade. Magnom Properties aims to achieve a “net-negative carbon vision” (removing more carbon than it emits) for the skyscraper over its lifecycle, and to become the first skyscraper in the world to register for Zero Carbon Certificate from the International Living Future Institute.
