About us
UGA ASCE is one of the leading STEM-focused student organizations on campus with an active mission of providing unique opportunities and experiences to our members. ASCE UGA is all-inclusive, welcoming all students of all majors who have an interest in civil development, whether it is engineering design, architecture, urban planning, or construction management. In previous years, we have been able to provide many opportunities for our members. We have brought guest lecturers from various engineering industries to allow our members to better understand the responsibilities and duties of practicing engineers or designers working in that industry. We have provided community service opportunities for our members such as tackling projects with Athens Habitat for Humanity to provide housing for those in need and tutoring kids about the wonders of engineering. We have also organized site visits to various exciting construction projects around Athens such as the Terry College of Business, the STEM Building, Sanford Stadium West End Zone Improvements, and many more. UGA ASCE is also recognized as a national ASCE Student Chapter and we have continually participated in leadership conferences as well as our annual collegiate conference in which we compete against other universities in thrilling competitions such as the concrete canoe. At UGA ASCE, we strive to develop a strong community that is united by our passion for civil engineering. We are continuously improving and we provide opportunities to allow our members to be the best engineers that they can be.

First time at the University of Georgia College of Engineering and wow! Thank you ASCE University of Georgia for having me, I felt the warmth and truly enjoyed spending some time with ya’ll. A highlight for me was a personal tour of the college by Interim Dean Stephan Durham, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, who informed me that UGA is the oldest engineering program in Georgia. This place wasn’t just filled with great tradition, incredible labs and resources for the students, and the expected charm of the south (I’m curious if he knows every student’s name, certainly seemed like it, amazing!), they’re also doubling down on some next-level professional development training to round out their students before sending them off to the “real world”. Truly impressed, can’t wait to see what UGA does with the big symposium next year, Go Dawgs! 🐾

Internships often bring to mind a list of tasks and projects, but their true value lies beyond the work itself. It’s about the relationships you build and the connections you make. During my recent internship, I realized that the bonds forged with mentors, colleagues, and fellow interns were as important as the skills I gained. These relationships have not only provided valuable insights and guidance but have also opened doors to new opportunities and perspectives. With that, I want to thank everyone at HUSSEY GAY BELL who made me feel welcome this summer and provided me with an experience I will never forget. I would like to specifically thank Mary Catherine Holloway SHRM-CP for facilitating a smooth transition into my role and for her unwavering support throughout my time in Savannah. I would also like to thank the entire Site-Civil and Structural team for teaching me how to more effectively use Civil3D and Revit and for the guidance provided while navigating these softwares this summer!

Our amazing Fundraiser Chair!! Go Margaret!
With classes beginning this week, I wanted to express my gratitude to KCI Technologies, Inc. for such an incredible summer internship experience. I have learned so much through this program and am so thankful for all of the opportunities I was provided with. I want to thank the entire Duluth office traffic team for their mentorship and support. I specifically want to thank Andrew Antweiler, George Curtis, and Daniel Pino for being so helpful and welcoming to me during my time at KCI. Throughout the summer, I was able to get a deeper understanding of traffic operations, signal timing, and the transportation industry as a whole. I am so thankful for the time I spent here this summer and am proud to have been a part of such an amazing company. I am excited to use these skills in my future coursework and career in Civil Engineering.

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT ☀️ ☀️ We have one of our awesome Conference Co-Chairs, Daniel Simons! Daniel spent this summer in Nashville, TN interning for the US Army Corps of Engineers! "Throughout the summer I attended pre-construction meetings with contractors, job site inspections, and saw a lot of cool construction/maintenance in progress. I also helped by reviewing project submittals, designing erosion prevention plans, and surveying. It was a great experience and allowed me to gain insight on what it takes to develop the large scale projects that help our country maintain and improve the infrastructure in place." Go Daniel and Go Dawgs!!

SUMMER SPOTLIGHT ☀️ ☀️ Next up, we have our awesome Intenal Vice President Yubil Tejada!! Yubil spent this summer far from Athens at SSIFT GmbH located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam! "This summer, I modeled buildings in several softwares for the purpose of structural analysis. I used Allplan to model German residential buildings and FRILO software for FEA. My focus was identifying areas needing extra shear reinforcement, and I created detailed structural drawings and 3D reinforcement files for rebar. I learned the importance of ensuring buildings met safety standards abiding by various Eurocodes." We love Dawgs abroad!

Two of our #Savannah interns, Noah Fornuto (UGA) and Mary Lawson (Tulane), attended the inaugural networking event of the summer hosted by #InternSAV. Organized by the Savannah Chamber, this event aims to bridge higher education and professional work experience for college interns in our community. It was an evening of valuable fellowship and networking. #InternSAV #SavannahChamber #ProfessionalDevelopment
