About us

Arizona Science Center has a rich history of exploration, innovation and collaboration. Beginning as a community project of The Junior League of Phoenix in 1980, the Center has established itself as a major institution of learning for families, teachers and students and other guests. Over three decades, with substantial help from the citizens of Phoenix and years of focused content and program development, the Center has grown to serve over a half million guests annually, of which nearly 140,000 are school children. The continued growth of the Center and its close connection with the Arizona community provides a unique experience for everyone it reaches. Using an informal, hands-on approach to science exploration and inspiration the Center has more than 164,000 square-feet of space, of which 98,000 is dedicated to the exploration of our guests. Additional learning opportunities and services include outreach programs, focused field trips, camps, classes, to-the-moon and beyond presentation in the Dorrance Planetarium, immersive shows in the 5-story Irene P. Flinn Theater and featured exhibitions.

It's almost the end of #WorldOceansMonth—have you learned any exciting ocean facts? Arizona Science Center's featured exhibition, OceanXperience, is full of them! Did you know that a hotter planet equals hotter oceans? Climate change is a long-term shift in weather and temperature patterns. As Earth gets warmer, the ocean soaks up most of that warmth. Since 1901, the top 2,300 feet of the global ocean has warmed 1.5°F—which may not seem like a lot, but even the slightest temperature change can cause fish migrations, intensify hurricanes, accelarate the melting of ice sheets and more!  Interested in learning more about our oceans and the impact you have on them? Plan a trip to OceanXperience at https://lnkd.in/gmv7iSxu

Join Arizona Science Center in celebrating the resilience and contributions of Black Americans in our society this #Juneteenth! Meet Dr. Ciara Sivels—a nuclear engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Here, she works on a variety of projects using radiation detection and modeling. Her past research and impressive achievments in nuclear explosion monitoring and treaty verification led to four first-authored publications and several research awards, including the DOE NNSA’s University Program Review National Laboratory Impact Award. At the University of Michigan, where Dr. Sivels made history and became the first Black woman to earn a PhD in nuclear engineering, she co-founded the Women in NERS group, providing a supportive space for women in the department to commune, share stories and discuss issues. Today and everyday, we advocate for diversity and inclusion in STEM, and uplift the Black voices like Dr. Ciara Sivels in our communities. Happy Juneteenth!
