Recently, Anthem in VA participated in the Black Maternal Health Legislative Summit in Richmond. Hosted by the Virginia House Speaker and Senate President and organized by the Black Legislative Leaders Network, the event served as the first multi-state summit on how to address Black maternal health care at the local, state, and federal levels. It brought together lawmakers from across the country for discussions and workshops centered on improving maternal health outcomes for Black mothers. Dr. Whonder-Genus and Shanice Gangadeen from VA Medicaid served on panels for the event. Dr. Melissa Clarke, VP Chief Equity and Social Impact Officer, welcomed the participants to the summit.

I am thrilled to share that members of the Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield team in Virginia have come together to launch a crucial initiative in Shenandoah County to combat the substance use disorder crisis among children and adolescents. I am immensely proud to be part of a team dedicated to making a lasting impact on the community’s future well-being.
Members of the Anthem team in Virginia gathered to unveil an initiative in Shenandoah County to address the substance use disorder crisis among children and adolescents. Through a three-year $750,000 grant awarded to its long-standing non-profit partner, The Open Table, Inc., Anthem has funded a program focused on “Strengthening Shenandoah” – an effort supporting the Shenandoah Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Shenandoah County Public Schools, Life Enrichment Services, and Strength in Peers. Death by overdose in Shenandoah County increased 97.8% in 4 years. Students self-disclose and confirm drug use as early as late elementary school. Students report not needing to complete their education due to future expectations of dealing drugs becoming their career, like their parent(s). Local access to treatment is limited. This groundbreaking community collaborative aims to reduce substance use and increase treatment and prevention of SUD in Shenandoah County that is affecting the school system’s students and their families.
