Candace had such a connection with a patient that the patient’s daughter recently called Candace to ask for help after he’d left her care. The man had lost his wife, and he was struggling with her death. His daughter wanted Candace to speak to him to offer consolement and reassurance. When Candace called him, she found out that he was on his way to the funeral home. She offered comfort and encouragement as best she could for his entire drive. Then she discovered no one was at the funeral home to meet him. She immediately drove to Honea Path to join him and remain until his daughter arrived. Candace’s kindness and compassionate support were treasured by the family. For her efforts, alongside Allison, she’s been named one of our Stars of the Month. Allison was caring for a Piedmont Health Partners patient whose home had lost power from a storm recently. The man had been directed to report to our Emergency Department since he needed power for his oxygen machine and his source of portable machines had none immediately available. Allison found the man at bedside, gathered information on his needs for durable medical equipment and called the appropriate company to have portable oxygen tanks delivered. But the company was unable to deliver them in a timely manner, so Allison went and picked them up. She then accompanied the man to his home, educated him on appropriate use of the tanks and contacted the power company to have the man’s address included on an emergency outage list because of his needs. Thanks to her efforts and collaboration with Piedmont Health Partners, the man was able to return home safely without admission to the hospital. The latest episode of the Better News Podcast is a special one with personal perspectives on adoption from within our health system. Adoptions within the U.S. and internationally have declined in recent years, but that doesn’t mean the need for adoptions is declining. AnMed teammates have firsthand experience on both sides of the family dynamic, and as it turns out, there’s a lot about our guiding values as an organization that relate to adoption. Listen in as CEO William Kenley, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Brad Mock, Tracie Mock and Respiratory Coordinator Michelle Christina Harper Cheatham share the love they’ve shared through adoptions.
