On a recent episode of the The Sustainable Angler Podcast, Wes Carter, president of Atlantic Packaging and founder of A New Earth Project, shares how his upbringing in the outdoors, heavily influenced by his grandfather Horace Carter—author of a dozen fishing books—shaped his passion for nature. This connection sparked his love for outdoor sports like surfing, snowboarding, hunting, and fishing. Today, that same love drives Wes as he leads the push for the packaging industry to adopt more sustainable materials. Our team member, Lyn Tally, recently attended Ocean Plastics Leadership Network’s fall expedition. From September 10th-13th, they explored Maine and Quebec’s innovative waste management and recycling systems with a diverse group of industry, government, and environmental leaders. Here’s what they learned: 🔄 Innovative Solutions: Forward-thinking approaches like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and bottle return schemes are helping create smarter, more efficient waste systems in Maine and Quebec. ♻️ Rethinking Waste: Companies are exploring creative ways to reduce single-use plastics, design reusable containers, and make waste systems more effective. Ensuring food-grade recycled materials and cleaner composting streams remains a challenge. 🌐 Global Insights: Quebec’s comprehensive approach to waste management offers valuable lessons on efficiency, showing a different path compared to current practices elsewhere. Here at A New Earth Project, we're committed to advancing sustainable packaging solutions, and the learnings from this expedition continue to inform how we help brands transition away from single-use plastics. Stay tuned as we continue to share insights and innovations from the expedition to drive progress in waste reduction and recycling. #WasteInnovation #SustainableSolutions #CircularEconomy

The design and manufacturing team at Lib Tech has been at the very forefront of mitigating the environmental impacts of snowboard and surfboard production from the start. It's a commitment they bring to every part of the process, from the safety of the materials they use to designing boards that last, and of course, how they ship their product. To that end, we're thrilled to have the Lib Tech crew helping us fine-tune our earth-friendly blocking and bracing technology for surfboards and snowboards. From our suspension wrap and nose-and-tail blocks to our basic bumpers to go inside boxes, it's been a blast helping them eliminate the need for problematic plastic. As their collab partners can attest, there's nothing better than working with innovators who care. Thank you Lib Tech! Andrew Mackenzie and Scott Carter became fast friends while attending the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, as temporarily landlocked surfers. Today, they’re both making big impacts in their careers. Mackenzie is a renowned surf filmmaker, while Carter is a senior leader at Atlantic Packaging, the parent company of A New Earth Project. Both remain diehard surfers committed to helping preserve our natural spaces. When Mackenzie began production on his latest film, Trilogy: New Wave, featuring Seth Moniz, Ethan Ewing, and Griffin Colapinto, Carter was eager to get involved. Together, they brainstormed and developed a 4-part behind-the-scenes (BTS) series offering viewers a rare glimpse into the filmmaking process, while spotlighting critical environmental issues affecting some of the world’s most iconic surf spots. At A New Earth Project, we’re proud to be part of this groundbreaking series. Both Scott and A New Earth Project founder Wes Carter are featured, sharing insights into the vital role surfers play in raising awareness of topics like risky offshore oil extraction in Peru, coral reef damage in Tahiti, the plastic pollution problem Indonesia, and the devastating impact of rare-earth mineral mining in South Africa. We believe surfers have a unique and outsized role as stewards of the ocean, and we invite you to join us in protecting these precious ecosystems. Go catch Trilogy: New Wave at https://lnkd.in/ekRZjsYF, and follow our BTS series on FUEL TV, FUEL TV +, and The Surf Network. During a recent visit to the Plastic Ocean Project (POP) lab at University of North Carolina Wilmington, Atlantic Packaging president and New Earth Project founder Wes Carter, alongside Executive Director of the Plastic Ocean Project, Bonnie Monteleone, got a forensic view of the staggering plastic pollution crisis impacting our oceans, lakes, and rivers. The situation is beyond alarming. While awareness is growing, shutting off the tap to this waste stream will take decades of dedicated effort. At A New Earth Project, we recognize this as one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. Our mission is to tackle it at the source—by moving people away from problematic single-use packaging and towards sustainable alternatives. We also work to scale new material technologies that are earth-friendly and life-affirming. Our natural world deserves better, and so do we. Join us in this critical mission by helping your brand—and the brands you support—make smarter, more sustainable packaging choices.
