Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the second round of Grid Resilience and Innovation Partnerships (GRIP) program awardees. GRIP was initially created and funded as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Today’s DOE awards total up to $2.2 billion across 8 projects, and will help integrate 13 GW of energy onto the grid, according to DOE. Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) Executive Director Christina Hayes issued the following statement: “ACEG applauds DOE’s investment in transmission through the GRIP program as a welcome step towards modernizing our nation’s infrastructure. The awards announced today will contribute to building or upgrading more than 1,000 miles of transmission lines — which is all the more important after only 55 new miles of high-voltage lines were built in 2023. We need more high-capacity transmission to provide communities across the country reliable, low-cost energy, particularly as we see increasing load growth and more frequent extreme weather events creating more strain on the grid. We look forward to supporting these awarded projects as they move closer to completion.” https://lnkd.in/eueBVzXQ

Focused on the need to expand, integrate, and modernize the North American high-voltage electric grid
About us
Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) is the only non-profit broad-based public interest advocacy coalition focused on the need to expand, integrate, and modernize the North American high-voltage grid. Expanded high-voltage transmission will make America’s electric grid more affordable, reliable, and sustainable and allow America to tap all economic energy resources, overcome system management challenges, and create thousands of well-compensated jobs. But an insular, outdated and often short-sighted regional transmission planning and permitting system stands in the way of achieving those goals. ACEG brings together the diverse support for an expanded and modernized grid from business, labor, consumer and environmental groups, and other transmission supporters to educate policymakers and key opinion leaders to support policy which recognizes the benefits of a robust transmission grid. ACEG is a 501(c)(3) organization.

The U.S. only builds 20% as much new transmission in the 2020s as it did a decade ago in the first half of the 2010s. Despite this decline in new construction, annual transmission spend has risen to more than $25 billion in 2023. 90% of this spend is driven by reliability upgrades and the replacement of aging equipment, which does not increase delivery capacity. However, projected load growth has doubled in the last year, and serving that load will require expanded transmission capacity. Only 55 miles of new high-voltage transmission were built in 2023, continuing a decline in the number of new miles built each year over the past decade. Our latest report for Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG), “Fewer New Miles: The US Transmission Grid in the 2020s”, shows that despite this decline in new construction, annual transmission spend has risen to more than $25 billion, with 90% of this spend driven by reliability upgrades and the replacement of aging equipment, which does not increase delivery capacity. FERC Order No. 1920 aims to reform long-term planning practices and facilitate the construction of new high-voltage lines. Both policymakers and regulators can capitalize on FERC’s issuance of Order 1920 to spur a massive investment in the construction of new high-voltage transmission lines to ensure a reliable and affordable transition to a cleaner grid. Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced selections for its Transmission Siting and Economic Development (TSED) Grants Program. This is a $760 million investment from the Inflation Reduction Act designed to accelerate siting and permitting for high-capacity, interstate transmission projects by supporting the work of state permitting agencies and investing in economic development in impacted communities. The first round of selections includes $370 million for 20 projects across 16 states. Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) Executive Director Christina Hayes issued the following statement: “ACEG firmly supports DOE’s investment in transmission through the TSED program. The selections announced today provide benefits, as well as support for workforce training and engagement, to communities hosting large transmission projects that will boost interregional transmission capacity. This is a valuable step towards building the expanded and modernized transmission system America needs, which will provide consumers access to low-cost energy, prevent dangerous power outages, and create good-paying jobs. We look forward to working with interested parties on the TSED-funded projects into the future.” Read our statement here: https://lnkd.in/d-_2zbuT

"We absolutely need an interstate, high-capacity transmission system in the same way that we have an interstate highway system, and so that is going to take a lot more forward thinking by the folks who do the planning, the building, and the developing," says Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) Director Christina Hayes on a new episode of the Know Power podcast with Noha Sidhom and Michael Borgatti. "At a time when limited grid capacity threatens to hamper America’s economic growth and harm reliability, FERC has recognized the role predictable long range transmission planning will play in developing this important infrastructure," say 33 state utility commissioners in a new letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. "We look forward to continuing to partner with FERC on effective implementation of Order No. 1920 and on the many other pressing energy issues facing our country." "As state utility commissioners, we know that these changes to how regions plan transmission will provide customers across the U.S. reliable, cost-effective electricity, while also making the grid more resilient, secure and able to handle the challenges that the future will hold. America’s livelihood depends on it," say five state utility commissioners – Ann Rendahl, Gabriel Aguilera, Davante Lewis, Andrew French, and Joseph Sullivan — in a new Utility Dive op-ed. FERC Order No. 1920 is a major step forward to prepare the grid to withstand the challenges of the coming decades and enable future economic prosperity. Today, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee released its bipartisan permitting reform proposal from Chairman Joe Manchin (I-W.Va.) and Ranking Member John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), which contains multiple provisions related to transmission infrastructure. “As extreme weather and rising energy demand stretches our nation’s energy grid to its limits, today’s permitting reform package rises to the occasion with policy changes that will help bolster grid reliability and our nation’s economic competitiveness by paving a path for the timely deployment of transmission infrastructure," says Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) Director Christina Hayes.
