    Gallup reports a 9% productivity gain due to doubling recognition. Humans are motivated by extrinsic and intrinsic factors. Extrinsic factors at work, such as getting paid, are motivations we often think of. Pay matters, and monetary incentives can be effective if done right. But extrinsic factors alone can only go so far. That leaves intrinsic factors to do much of the motivating.     The most practical way to increase the esteem that every employee needs is to have a very simple, yet profound, recognition program. The ROI on recognition programs within an organization is considerable. Most organizations have not created recognition programs for one of these reasons 1. Don't understand the ROI 2. Cost concerns (don't want to allocate budget for them) 3. Cultural barriers (results over recognition priorities) 4. Resource constraints (don't have someone who can maintain one) 5. Lack of expertise (don't know how to design a program) 6. Inconsistent implementation (think they're difficult to maintain) 7. Perceived ineffectiveness 8. Focus on other priorities I hear where they are coming from BUT... They are an essential piece of positive reinforcement, so we can do work the way we say we're going to do it. We work with our clients to create what we call "shout out programs". They are customized to each organization and their specific culture, but in every instance they reinforce, recognize and affirm individuals' esteem.     A long time ago, money was the major motivator in order to attract and retain talent. Employee motivation has shifted greatly in the marketplace, and much is understood about the motivational capability of money. Money IS the greatest motivator to attract and retain talent until it MEETS the individual's needs. However, once it EXCEEDS an individual's needs, its motivational capability is greatly reduced. Intrinsic motivators, like the ones we see in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, greatly enhance. Every good organization must sink deeper into how they attract and retain top talent. Going through exercises revolving around Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs with our clients has been a refreshing way to paint a brighter picture of how attraction and retention of top talent is feasible, desirable., and a major factor for growth. #recruiting #retention #smallbusiness #growth #employeemotivation
