Case Spotlight: Bilateral comminuted, intra-articular distal radius fractures. A 26-year-old right-handed woman fell 4 feet from a shelf, sustaining bilateral distal radius fractures. Initial treatment involved closed reduction, which achieved reasonable alignment, followed by CT scans that revealed segmental metaphyseal comminution with small articular shear fragments. Dr. Marc Richard from Duke Health Care performed operative fixation using bilateral spanning plates. The right wrist was stabilized with a spanning plate, while the left wrist required direct reduction of fragments, supplemental K-wire fixation, and cancellous allograft bone. Dr. Richard praised the narrow wrist-spanning plate for its ease of passage deep to the 4th compartment without difficulty and highlighted its improved lower profile and fit.
