About us
What we do might surprise you! AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, social mission organization with a membership of nearly 38 million. Our aim is to disrupt outdated stereotypes about aging, turn goals and dreams into real possibilities, and fight for the issues that matter most to people 50-plus, their families and communities. Our social impact work in health security, financial resilience, and personal fulfillment is at the heart of what we do. With offices in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we live and work in the communities we serve. We listen to what people need and want, and offer programs, services and trusted information that are directly relevant to them. State offices also work with our national office to amplify our members’ voices at the local and federal levels to help empower people 50 and above to choose how they live and work as they age. From being a force for positive change to producing the nation’s largest-circulation magazine – the full scope of what we do might surprise you! That’s why people who are excited by unique opportunities and galvanized by meaningful challenges come to work at AARP.

Ageism doesn't end with an insensitive comment at work. It can push older workers to the sidelines, stall careers, disrupt retirement plans, and deny the American economy decades of experience and insight. Join experts gathered by WorkingNation and Scripps News, including AARP's Carly Roszkowski, as they examine problems and potential solutions around ageism in the workplace. Tune in to “Breaking Barriers, Embracing Age in the Workforce,” on Friday, June 21 at 9 p.m. ET. Mark H. Goldstein, 67, a seasoned professional with decades of experience, met many of the qualifications for a cyber defense technologist role at Raytheon. But despite having a master’s degree and cybersecurity certification, there was one requirement he didn't meet: being “currently enrolled or a recent graduate (within 18 months)” of a graduate program. AARP Foundation, working with two law firms, has filed a class action lawsuit against Raytheon, alleging that the aerospace and defense company has refused to hire workers for many positions unless they are recent graduates of college or graduate school — a requirement that has prevented Goldstein and other older applicants from competing or getting hired for those jobs.

As Americans continue to extend their work lives well into their later years, the specter of age discrimination looms large in the hiring landscape. This class action lawsuit, filed earlier this week by AARP Foundation and two law firms, shines a spotlight on a longstanding issue. Every individual, regardless of age, deserves an equal shot at opportunities in the workplace. It's time for discrimination based on age to come to an end. #AgeEquality #InclusiveWorkplaces #EndAgeDiscrimination

AARP Foundation, along with law firms Peter Romer-Friedman Law PLLC, and Outten & Golden LLP, filed a new class action lawsuit against a major government contractor that has allegedly intentionally discriminated against older jobseekers for years. #AgeDiscrimination continues to be pervasive in hiring across the country. Nearly one in six adults report that they were not hired for a job they applied for within the past two years because of their age, and half of jobseekers report that they were asked by an employer to provide their birth date during the application or interview process.
