We listen to what people need and want, and offer programs, services and trusted information that are directly relevant to them. State offices also work with our national office to amplify our members’ voices at the local and federal levels to help empower people 50 and above to choose how they live and work as they age. From being a force for positive change to producing the nation’s largest-circulation magazine – the full scope of what we do might surprise you! That’s why people who are excited by unique opportunities and galvanized by meaningful challenges come to work at AARP.

I was so pleased to join more than 700 AARP staff for an energy-filled meal pack event to celebrate this year’s 9/11 Day of Service. Together, we prepared 2,500 meal boxes that will be distributed by the Capital Area Food Bank, providing more than 13,000 meals to those they serve. We also filled 2,500 snack bags to be distributed by SOME (So Others Might Eat), providing convenient and nutritious food to unhoused members of our local community here in Washington, D.C. As I look back over the last 10-plus years at AARP, I am so proud of what we have accomplished together – and that includes bringing greater visibility to the issue of senior hunger. And I want to say thank you to our dedicated staff and volunteers who work each day to make aging easier and improve the lives of others. #DayofService #Volunteering #Hunger #FightHunger #OlderAdults

The number of people who have been making withdrawals from their 401(k) plans to cover unanticipated financial disruptions has been steadily increasing the last few years. For people under the age of 59½, that usually comes with a costly early withdrawal penalty. Even more alarming is that early withdrawals don’t affect all communities equally. Here, we look at the high cost of taking money out of 401(k)s and which racial groups are more likely to be impacted.
