The 2nd Conference Ethics and AI: From Trustworthy to Benevolent AI The “Ethics and AI” Conference, initiated by a group of researchers affiliated with the Warsaw University of Technology, serves as an interdisciplinary forum bringing together AI engineers, philosophers, ethicists, and scholars of argumentation theory who are engaged with the ethical challenges posed by the rapid development of AI technologies. Following the success of the inaugural edition in 2024, we are pleased to announce the second iteration of the event. Anne Marte G. from the Philosophy & Ethics (P&E) research group defended her PhD research on April 10th on technological citizenship. Her work provides insights into how citizens can shape the future of digital technology and contribute to a resilient digital society. In her research, she introduces the concept of technological citizenship, which goes beyond traditional political participation. It encompasses interactions with digital technology in private, social, and public spheres. This research is based on seven case studies, including Dutch volunteer hackers and nurses involved in developing AI-driven healthcare technology. These case studies demonstrate how citizens can play an active role in identifying and addressing digital risks and improving technologies. The research advocates for inclusive and flexible approaches to technology development and governance, ensuring that the digital future is safe, fair, and in the public interest. By actively involving citizens in the development and governance of digital technology, the full potential of these technologies can be realized while protecting public interests. #DigitalSociety #TechnologicalCitizenship #Innovation 🌐💡🤝

Yesterday, my PhD journey at Utrecht University came to an end, as I had the opportunity to defend my thesis on The Ethics of Humanoid Robots (available here https://lnkd.in/dMRV5k_D). I am eternally grateful to my wonderful supervisors for all their guidance (Ingrid Robeyns 🟥, Sven Nyholm, Lily Frank and Lucie White). Thank you to my examination committee and opponents for taking the time to read my thesis, and challenging me further during my defence (Peter-Paul Verbeek, Emma Ruttkamp-Bloem, Paula Sweeney, Lambèr Royakkers, Christopher Wareham, Joel Anderson and Jan Broersen). And thank you to my wonderful paranymphs Kristy Claassen 🟥 & Jana Mišić for your support. I had an amazing 4 years working within the ESDiT Research Programme. While I am excited to be heading back home to South Africa, it was a bitter-sweet day. Utrecht and all the wonderful people I have met in the Netherlands will always hold a very special place in my heart! ❤️

Tomorrow last day to register for the course Philosophies of technology. The course runs across five days, with each day covering one dimension of philosophy of technology: metaphysics, (meta)ethics, politics, applied ethics. For each topic there will be at least one invited lecture from someone from the 4TU.Ethics network, and at least one interactive exercise. Every day, the course will also entail interactive activities in which students will discuss the course’s authors and topics in relation to their own research interests.
