As a product designer, I've seen firsthand how crucial it is to prioritize usability over creativity. Usability is about making sure the design is intuitive and accessible. It’s about helping users achieve their goals without any hassle. This often means sticking to familiar patterns and conventions, even if it limits some creative expressions. Users should feel comfortable and confident while using the product. That doesn’t mean creativity isn’t important. It should enhance usability. For example, thoughtful animations or unique icons can make the experience more engaging as long as they don't confuse or distract users.

Usability will always take precedence, creativity has room if it matches the tone of what you're working on/what you're looking to accomplish. The best way to see if the landing sticks is user interviews and clickable prototypes. Creativity can become too much or misunderstood if its not user friendly or if it adds too much noise to the particular user flow you're improving/solving for.

As a UX designer, both creativity and usability are crucial. Prioritize usability for core functionality, ensuring a seamless experience. Then, infuse creativity into interactions, animations, and micro-interactions. Balance lies in harmonizing innovation with practicality. Innovate within constraints. Know the product you're designing for and the objectives/roadmap its attached to. You're not going to approach enterprise level software with the mindset of designing for social media. But you can think about typical best practices to make the product you're working on feel seamless for your users, regardless of the age group or the type of product they're interacting with. There's also a balance of features/what your product offers vs your users understanding of how to navigate your product regardless of how complex it is.

As UX designers, we bridge user needs and business objectives. For instance, while developing a project, we prioritized features that aligned with our market's tech-savvy nature, such as advanced analytics tools, which helped us meet business goals while catering to our audience's preferences.

The goals and objectives of your project should always define your roadmap, so if you're designing for a highly regulated industry, such as finance or healthcare, usability might need to take precedence to ensure compliance and user safety. On the other hand, if you’re working on a project aimed at capturing a younger, trend-setting audience, leaning towards creativity can help differentiate your product in a crowded market. Aligning your design decisions with business objectives ensures that your team's efforts support the overall strategic goals of the company.

Creative expression has to act as MSG to usability. But since this is a question, we have to understand that usability must take the first priority. Creative expression should aid in usability.
