I ask them a question of why they work here. I may ask why they chose this line of work. Also, I may ask them a question about a favorite sports team, music, or what they like to read. Anything to change the interview up or in a subtle way "wake their brain" up.

I think in my experience it’s a two way street, you are interviewing them but I will try to be as active as possible and be myself but at the same time I will ask them questions as well to see how they are engage and like their role as you can see if you are a good fit and connection.

I once did an interview that was very formal, but it doesn't mean that it isn't a great position. They probably aren't the one that will be directly working with you if that is the case.

Questions about culture, company goals and how I am expected to integrate into the organization are just a few examples of questions that I ask.

All great points here. I would ask for a tour of the facility to gain introductions around the building and let them see you interact as if you are part of the team.
