To walk towards a sustainable future, we first need to identify the underline reason why the world is unsustainable in the first place, why we produce and consume more of what we need, very exploitatively. The lesser the bargaining power of a stakeholder, the more exploitative our behavior is, as if we are completely devoid of any sense of responsibility. Is this how we are? Perhaps not, as otherwise, the world would turn extremely chaotic and unstable. Upton Sinclair once said "It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends on his not understanding it", so perhaps here is the problem, we need to detach saving the environment with our greed for profit, and do it because it is the right thing to do!

Defining a clear and compelling purpose is the foundation for meaningful innovation. It not only guides your efforts but also resonates with your audience, building trust and loyalty. Your purpose should reflect a genuine commitment to addressing real-world problems and delivering value beyond profit. When you can articulate how your innovation makes a positive impact, it becomes a powerful driver for success.

A better starting paragraph would say, “how do you build products and deliver services that allow you to realize your vision, benefit your customers, save resources and protect the common good. “

Entrepreneurs are in a unique position to innovate for sustainability due to their small, yet agile structure. The question is how can they best use their resources to innovate for sustainability. 1: What does sustainability mean to you, your team, your stakeholders? (Please think about the following: How will your business get impacted by climate change, loss of biodiversity, societal problems such as gender equality, poverty, etc) 2: Does this definition of sustainability serve your business, your stakeholders? Is there a sectoral alignment? 3: What impact will your business have on the environment and society before the innovation? 4: How do the previous questions' answers align with your current business mission, vision, and actions?

Align goals - Ensure your business objectives align with sustainable development goals. Embrace eco-design - Consider environmental impacts in product design & development stages. Nurture partnerships- Collaborate with eco-friendly suppliers & like-minded businesses. Adapt circular economy principles - Minimise waste through recycling & reusing resources. Invest in green tech - Utilise sustainable technologies for operations & production processes. Consumer awareness - Educate customers on the environmental benefits of your products/services. Measure impact - Regularly assess & report your environmental footprint and societal impact. Continuous improvement - Stay informed about sustainability trends & adjust business practices.

Innovations are undoubtedly valuable, but there has been a recurring issue of inadequate design, resulting in significant waste generation with little clarity about the product's end-of-life cycle. Frequently, this places the burden on others to find solutions, and this pattern has gone unquestioned for too long. It's unfortunate that sustainability considerations only gained prominence in response to the onset of climate disasters. We must thoroughly evaluate the problem area before rushing into innovation, emphasising that innovators should bear responsibility for the products they create.

In my experience, the first step in creating new product or service is to have a clear vision how and why your solution solves some particular customer need that you identified. So, when defining your purpose, you should consider the following factors: 1. What problem are you solving? 2. Who is the target group? 3. What sustainability impact does your solution have on wider society? 4. What is your mission and vision? 5. How will you communicate and influence engagement and change in the market?

I think it's important to begin by defining sustainability in the context of innovation / entrepreneurship? Are we talking about sustainability in terms of environmental impact, or are we referring to the entrepreneur's ability to maintain a level of innovation as the business grows (thus hedging the Innovator's Dilemma)?

Entrepreneurship is not for everyone, it takes dedication, industry expertise, and that A-ha! moment. There will be an inflection point in your career where you feel like you are no longer making an impact within your organization. What that time comes start building your exit strategy. Everyone's corporate exit strategy is different, take your time and prepare yourself for departure!

Embracing sustainability is no longer optional; it's a business imperative. As an entrepreneur, your purpose should be the compass guiding you towards solutions that are not just profitable but also sustainable. We must 'make sustainability so desirable it becomes normal.' This means innovating in ways that not only meet customer needs but also contribute positively to society and the planet.

We need to acknowledge that the journey of an entrepreneur is never easy, with constant pressure to get new clients and balance cashflows. The question becomes how can we best support entrepreneurs to integrate sustainability into their mission and actions early on? What has changed in the last 10 years is that sustainability in business is now becoming the license to operate in the business world, from access to financing to unlocking client expectations. Here are three key questions: 1- How can sustainability add value to my start-up? 2-How will this opportunity advance my access to better resources and advance my unique value proposition? 3-What does the entrepreneur need to learn and innovate for sustainability?

By gathering insights from primary and secondary sources, you can identify gaps, opportunities, and trends to refine your value proposition and positioning. This research is the solid ground upon which successful innovations are built.

The second step after defining your purpose is to do market research including: 1. Your target customers, their needs, characterics and behaviours 2. Your main competitors, who are they, in what way your product is unique and how you can position in best in the market. You can also do a SWOT analyis, to analyse strengths and weaknesses of your product, as well as opportunities and threats in the market.

Build a green brand - Emphasise sustainability in branding to attract eco-conscious consumers. Stay agile - Continuously update strategies based on market evolution & customer feedback. The first step in our design exploration is to understand our riskiest hypothesis - to validate or invalidate our concept. This concept is in-line with a minimum viable product approach, to add a life-centered focus to it we must align our business model to how our business will contribute to decarbonization. Measuring total addressable market in conjunction with total addressable emissions will help us align profit and purpose even as we test our riskiest hypothesis for our product or service experiment.

Designing a sustainable solution requires a multi-faceted approach. Consider a fashion startup aiming to be sustainable. It's not just about using eco-friendly materials, but also about ethical labor practices, energy-efficient production, and a circular economy model for product lifecycle. Financial viability could come from a subscription-based model, allowing for product recycling and reducing waste. Operational efficiency might involve localized production to minimize carbon footprint. The branding should resonate with eco-conscious consumers, making sustainability a key part of the value proposition and user experience.

Creating a sustainable solution involves considering its environmental, social, and economic implications. Balancing these factors is challenging, but necessary. In my experience, while the strategies mentioned earlier are crucial for sustainable innovation, it's equally essential to adopt a balanced mindset that combines both effectual and causal thinking. The aforementioned solutions predominantly align with causal thinking, which is valuable. However, given today's fast-paced business landscape marked by rapid technological advancements and the emergence of new technologies, entrepreneurs must remain vigilant to new trends and technologies. Embracing these trends can lead to the most impactful sustainable innovations in our ever-changing world.

Our journey started with a broad web of business models and sources of revenue. I'd say we had at least 5 go-to market strategies during the first six months. As a lean startup we took every opportunity that came up, and it brought in working capital. As time went on, we began focusing on our most disruptive strategy and then went to market with it and built partnerships around it. #Entrepreneurship is a sprint then a marathon then another sprint.
