I will suppose the basics are already in place. From here it is always important to understand the network infrastructure as a beginner/ or in a new role. Ask questions like: 1. What is the network design? (Ask for an LLD) 2. How do the devices talk to each other? (Static, OSPF, EIGRP,BGP etc.) 3. What security features are in place? (Auth, ACLs, Port-Security, DDOS protection, Firewalls etc.) (If you aren't employed yet you can use labs instead!) Anyway, the above, gives an intro to the inner-workings of the network. I asked my team lead a LOT of questions and fortunately he was happy to guide me through these. This isn't grasped overnight, but things start to click gradually as you apply your knowledge with your experience!
