It doesn't matter if you win it or not. What matters is that you tried and gave your best shot. Participate in numerous competitions and see how it goes. Keep networking and keep learning new things.

It is helpful to let people know what your talents are. When you network, people become interested in your line of work. Have a short and concise description of your work ready to deliver. An elevator speech you might call it, and be ready to show your work on your phone or website.

Networking, especially in this day and age is a big contributor to one’s success. Yes, talent is a given. But if you do not knock on the right doors, the right people will not see your talent.

Take the time to explore the art by diligently observing the work of other photographers and networking. Travel as much as you can, always observing and shooting. Know what you want to say. Discover own voice/style (that stems from the qualities of personal passion, talent and preference) in the field and work on improving the skills you need to maximize those qualities and so convey what it is that you are yearning to express. When you are able to express yourself with authenticity, because you really know what you want to say/ convey, your audience and market will begin to materialize. As you begin to draw an appreciative audience, you can tackle the challenges of marketing and reach out to reputable experts if you need assistance.

Specializing in a certain niche is important because it can allow you to focus on one particular area without scrambling each day on what type of content to produce. As a photographer I can say I do not have a niche as of yet, because I am open to any and all type of photography but I do have certain shoots that I have found I enjoy shooting such as graduation and birthday shoots. You can be a versatile photographer and shoot it all but have at least one to two shoots you genuinely enjoy shooting so that you can advertise those particular ones more and you’re sure to get the kind of clients you want, compensation and more.

There is a thought that in the hands of a good photograph, any equipment will create stunning images. While this is true to a certain extent, it is imperative that a photographer has the knowledge of all the equipment and softwares that are available. And there should be an effort put in to be proficient in changing technology.

Staying up to date with the transition of technology daily is super important especially when it comes to photography because different gadgets and editing tools can do and produce different effects depending on what your approach is on a project. I can agree that staying tech savvy will help you to stay competitive. That is not to say though, that if you aren’t you cannot produce the same or better content quality; it’s just helpful if you can be. If you aren’t able to stay tech savvy with everything, the most important one I would say to be sure to stay on top of is the editing softwares. You are going to spend a lot of time in front of one, so be on top of it.

Save your money. Go and assist a photographer with 20+ years experience if you want to learn useful skills. The world of academia, whilst interesting is not a place to learn what skills you need to make a living in this game.

Une chose qui m'a été utile dans mon parcours de photographe c'est mes études en photographie. Cela ma surtout permis d'apprendre et comprendre l'utilisation de certains matériels comme les différents types de flash en studio et comment utiliser des outils pour avoir des images parfaitement exposées telles que je la perçois dans la réalité. Interprété en photographie permet de libérer sa créativité mais je pense qu'il est essentiel et très important pour un photographie qui veut vivre de sa passion de savoir produire une série d'images cohérentes qui correspond à la réalité en tout points (ex: pour les packshot).

Creo que el aprendizaje continuo es fundamental en cualquier área profesional. Desde que me gradué como fotógrafa en la universidad, continúo realizando cursos de fotografía que me permiten evolucionar constantemente en mi profesión. Sin embargo, considero que también es importante capacitarnos en otras áreas que están involucradas durante nuestro proceso de trabajo. Por ejemplo: Realicé cursos de maquillaje y asesoramiento de moda. Gracias a estos conocimientos puedo comunicarme, de forma más clara y fluida, con los miembros del equipo que son responsables del maquillaje y styling en una producción fotográfica.

Staying on top of your craft is very vital. Although you can go to workshops, do online courses or even get a master’s degree you can find the same knowledge or more by finding a mentor who is genuine about helping, supporting and holding you accountable. I have personally done an online course and I got some great knowledge from it but it’s nothing like getting out in the field and learning while working because that is truly the best teacher when it comes to photography. I have learned so much by just being in the moment of a shoot or editing a project. Everything listed is great options to further your education it’s just all a matter in your preference and if you use it effectively.

Marketing yourself and putting yourself out there is one of the most important things, this can be done by all the other tools mentioned in this thread (networking actively, embracing technology, etc) and one of the best ways to do this to build credibility by sharing valuable content with your followers/ visitors. Further you can put out BTS content of the shoot and documenting your shooting process.

Beyond that, make use of the facilities to learn SKILLS. Degree programs are a great place to try and develop good habits to try concepts and ideas. Self-driven motivation is a vital skill, but is heavily personality dependent, sometimes it's best to just surround yourself with the best of the best to push you.
