Take some time to pick the right course AND the right instructor. Think about how you want to work, and which programs and equipment you want to use. If you want to learn Lightroom on a PC, look for an expert in Lightroom who teaches on a PC, or who is intentional about teaching PC and Mac commands. There are enough differences between the two that it can be confusing for you if the instructor isn't teaching on the system you use. You may need to learn your tablet or touch screen before you find a course on editing software. You'll need to know how to set up commands on your pen and tablet before starting a course. If you don't have to stop and figure out how your tablet works, it will make it easier for you to learn your app.

Like when learning anything, listening is key. If at this stage you are a beginner or venturing into a new style of photography then listening and following instructions is key. At the beginning follow to the letter what you have been taught. Go over step by step and take the time to understand what your are doing and what you are trying to achieve. As you progress only then can you develop your own way of doing things but hopefully achieving the same finished result. However you do it later the basics will be the same. Its the basics that you need to get right before anything.

As with any course, you cannot fully grasp the idea of the lesson you have learned if you do not apply it. It is important to keep on practicing even after the course has ended. Doing it regularly can hone your skills, and you can even discover your own style!

This is not just limited to online courses. I learnt photography in my Bachelors Degree for 3 months and forgot about it in the next 2 months. The place where I learnt again was not in the class but outdoors where I trying every setting on the camera. I spent the hours failing to learn in the final few minutes and what you learn in those last few minutes, sticks with you for a life-time.

You can’t just learn by watching. You have to put what you see on the screen into practice. Since it’s online, stop along the way. Try the different settings or set ups for shots. It’s not a race to finish the course. Just finishing won’t help you unless you can apply what you’ve learned.

Online classes offer various options of techniques, theory, photo rules instruction but there is no certain rule could be applied in the real-world situation. Objects and moments are one of a kind. If skills and aesthetic eyes are not improved by practicing and learning from mistakes, you will never master the general photography

Not seeking feedback while practicing photography can hinder your growth. Without outside perspectives, you risk stagnation by repeating mistakes and missing chances to enhance your skills. Constructive criticism and diverse viewpoints help identify weaknesses, allowing for targeted improvements that self-assessment might overlook. Additionally, the absence of feedback limits your exposure to new techniques, trends, and community engagement, potentially isolating you from valuable learning opportunities and connections within the photography world. Embracing feedback is crucial for evolving as a photographer, offering insights that propel you beyond your limitations and encouraging continual development in your craft.

Take it on the chin !!!. Feed back from mentors or peers is important for improving. A lot of us hate to be told our image is not very good. Or you think you have a great image to be told its ok. Your mentors are not telling you this to put you off but to make you think of what you are doing the next time. Take note of what you are being told and put it into practice. Not all the so called rules will fit your photography but only through listening to advice you will be able to work out what works and what doesn't.

It can be difficult to ask for feedback because to create something is to put one's effort and soul into it but there is nothing like great constructive feedback from an expert to inspire exponential growth. With feedback, remember these points: - It is safe to keep your art to yourself, but it doesn't lead to growth - Critiques help you look at photographs differently and it widens your perspective on how someone else might view and interpret your work. - Understand that the person giving the feedback likely has nothing to gain from providing honest critique so honor their time by really listening to what they are saying and why they are saying it - Feedback can enlighten and spark new ideas that may help your best work. Use it.

This one is important if you are trying to grow as a photographer or if you are a photographer looking for new clients. Here are some ways you can start or join a community: - Be Helpful: help others and share resources so everyone can grow together - Share your work online: when you show your work, others can either praise or critique it. Both can be powerful assets for growth so take the leap - Create together: find others in your area who will do test shoots with you and are crazy enough to wake up at 5am for that good light. - Join online forums/ communities: LinkedIn, Instagram, Tiktok comment section: wherever you find your people, engage with them - Seek out experts: follow photographers you admire: interview them, be inspired.

Engaging with the community is a double-edged sword. While seeking feedback is a good idea, but there are a lot of folks who simply do not know what they're talking about. It can hurt in 2 ways: One, they can unintentionally fall for groupthink. The first commenter can say "I love this pic," and the second one agrees, the third one and so on. Two, they can be too shy to provide critical feedback you may need. People are generally nice, especially to strangers. Only a few people will call out areas you may actually need to improve. Personally, I am in several groups for photography. I don't actively participate in engagement, but I critically review photos that are being posted.

If your not having fun or losing your passion for it something is wrong. Do not stress or worry yourself about an image that has not worked out for you. Its not the end of the world. The plus side of digital is you can just reshoot again at no extra cost. Learning Photography isn't a competition in general. Only by trying new things, new styles will you find out what works and what doesn't work. People will like or dislike but the main objective is your own satisfaction in your own work. Be bold Be brave.

Before you decide to pay for a photography course, you cannot forget about YouTube University! It is free and there are a ton of photographers out there putting together videos and giving out free advice and tips. Till this day I still hunt for new vids and new creators. I myself even started putting vids out on tiktok and Instagram for beginners. So don't spend money yet, checkout youtube, tons of resources out there.
