How do you foster a culture of openness and integrity that encourages whistleblowing when necessary?

To build a culture of openness and honesty, let your team know they can speak up without worry. Say it's okay to report any bad stuff, and you won't get in trouble. Make sure they can tell someone without giving their name, and promise to keep them safe from any harm.

It starts by defining expectations and then walking the talk. Communicating what constitutes a breach, laying out consequences and/or zero tolerance depending upon the severity of the issue then carrying through with those actions with no exceptions clearly communicates how seriously you hold the issue. Applauding individuals who speak up shows everyone there will be trust and support.

Creating an environment where openness and integrity are not just encouraged but deeply ingrained is pivotal for any organization. Cultivating a culture where individuals feel empowered to speak up when they witness wrongdoing is essential for maintaining trust and accountability. Establishing clear channels for reporting, ensuring confidentiality, and emphasizing the importance of ethical behavior at all levels are key strategies. Ultimately, it's about fostering a culture where speaking up is seen as a responsibility to the organization's well-being rather than a risk to one's own position.

Promoting transparency and ethical behaviour within the organisation will help to foster an open and honest culture. Encourage honest conversation and courteous disagreement. Establish explicit channels for reporting issues, while maintaining anonymity and whistleblower protections. Lead by example, exhibiting honesty and accountability in all your acts. Provide ongoing ethics and compliance training, emphasising the necessity of speaking up. Celebrate ethical behaviour while addressing misconduct quickly and fairly. This method fosters trust and promotes a proactive approach to addressing misconduct, thereby protecting the organization's reputation and principles.

When a company define its values, it sets the tone that is going to use to conduct its business. But, how do you define those values? You need to define your ethical values (e.g. honesty, fairness, diversity) and your business values (e.g. innovation, customer-focused). According to the Institute of Business Ethics, “business values are what the company will deliver; ethical values are how the business values will be achieved.” This is the first thing you need to define if you want to promote workplace ethics across your organization.

At times policies can be misinterpreted or vague. Seeking continuous feedback from across the firm, irrespective of department or seniority level, ensures there is an understanding of expectations. It also opens the door to improve messaging and even craft better policies. This also extends to your clients; enlisting feedback beyond product/service performance opens the door for deeper relationships.

In order to encourage and support the reporting of potential infractions start with defining and communicating clear and accessible procedures. Transparency builds trust, encourage openness. Early detection through whistleblowing can mitigate bigger risk issues down the road: be proactive. Ensure that you relay your commitment to anonymity and confidentiality. Highlight that you will conduct fair and impartial investigations as well as prevent retaliation. Lastly, communicate the action and outcome of these efforts to evidence that the policy is both in practice and advantageous.

Por mais que a empresa mantenha a confidencialidade das denúncias e nas investigações, os colaboradores envolvidos acabam fazendo uma "campanha velada" pela seriedade. Por isso, nunca devemos deixar um denunciante sem retorno e explicar que, mesmo que não possamos tomar uma ação corretiva imediata, ações de treinamento serão adotadas - e que ele veja as mesmas sendo realizadas.

However, taking the opposite approach (highlighting good behavior and role modeling) may be more effective. If your employees see that people who show exemplary ethics are rewarded with incentives and promotions, they will feel more encouraged to adopt ethical behaviors regularly. This is a very effective way of fostering an ethical culture in the workplace.

Nothing ruins culture faster than a lack of integrity from the leadership team. Any executive or manager should understand and be recognized for promoting a high bar for moral standards. For example, if misleading a client on pricing or performance to close the sale is tolerated it sends a strong signal to the rest of the team that revenue is rewarded above integrity. If a manager ’protects’ an individual; it erodes trust. Everyone has a role to play.
