In my experience, the challenge with remote work is the missed opportunities for informal connections. - Start virtual meetings 5-10 minutes early so people can join and have a chat before the agenda starts. - Periodically call/video call people instead of messaging/emailing them. It's the virtual desk pop-by. - Share the pain: if you're spread across numerous time zones, be sure one time zone doesn't always get the short end of the stick with meeting times. - Create team rituals that can keep people engaged and connected (e.g., Meme Mondays - every Monday morning folks share a meme [with or without context] that summarizes their weekend)

Set clear goals and break work down into milestones where possible. This breaks up the endless work cycle into manageable deadlines and periodic work flows. Give feedback frequently and be very specific about what was great and what could be improved. Also, let employees know the results or value of their work, since remote workers cannot always see or hear the impact of their work on other parts of the company. Intentionally make time for team building. Check ins and ice breakers help remote workers build relationships. Creating team projects can help remote workers develop and improve communication and problem-solving skills in the digital environment, as well as trade tips and tricks for using their digital tools.

I make an effort to have regular check-ins with my remote team to enable us address any issues, celebrate their achievements to keep morale high, and provide opportunities for learning, and growth through online courses and also provide mentorship to keep them engaged and motivated.

At some point, you'll feel like your remote team members are getting lost, that there's no real connection anymore, and that you don't know what's going on with them. From my experience, it is crucial to maintain regular contact and infuse your online meetings with a sense of fun, laughter, and play. Fortunately, a creative colleague on the team helped us come up with fun spots. We started meeting regularly online with an invitation for a "coffee break". We included fun topics, quizzes, and ways to get to know each other differently. Everyone started looking forward to these meetings. Discussing business topics became easier. It felt like everyone was more motivated, sticking together again, being a team, and pursuing common goals.
