There are lots of valuable alternatives when you can't find an internship in your desired field, but before randomly choosing from the usual suspects (volunteering, upskilling, independent project, different type of internship etc.), be more strategic. Think about what would you have wanted to get out of an internship in your targeted field. Specific technical/functional skills? Industry knowledge/exposure? Expanded professional network? Enhanced soft skills? Something else? Then pick the alternate route that will help you gain those outcomes.

If you're struggling to find internships in your desired field, broaden your search to related industries and leverage networking platforms like LinkedIn. Consider freelancing or volunteering to gain experience, and propose internships to companies that may not be offering them currently. One has to understand very clearly that all the functions of Management are co-related with each other. Internship just a peep into an organisation for few days. And life is a learning process all through. So just go and pick every aspects of Management.

Volunteering in the relevant field can also be considered. One can opt to consider internships in other fields as one continues to learn key aspects such as strategy and leadership.

Internships do not have to be academic major or field specific. They provide professional skill experiences like time management, data/information collection, interpretation, and presentation, etc. one will need to call upon to tackle the unexpected obstacles of being a new hire.

When struggling to find an internship in your field, I would still suggest exploring your options in related fields, or even offering to volunteer (if your situation permits), just to get some experience. Volunteering always provides worthwhile experience and helps you meet people and connections. Continue to build your network (and your skills) and always keep a positive outlook in the process. if you are in school, you're advisor should be able to provide additional resources, but you can also reach out to a local staffing agency. They are very connected and exist to connect talent and find people jobs (even temporary jobs), which are much like paid internships.

Keep your eyes open and always be prepared to think outside the box. This also applies to the search for internships. I always give our students the tip that they should also look for an internship in a different field than their studies are. I also see this as an opportunity if you can't find an internship in the field you are looking for. Many success stories began with a lateral entry.

I think the universe has a different plan for you. Start of your own, though small and with minimal resources..But take the first step and create something of your own choice. Plan to give internships to others...in the process, you can climb great heights.

I would like to share my story about Internships and some methods with internet,networking,research and self exploration. Internships are not always advertised by businesses or only have a contracted agreement with partners. The Hidden market is your best bet to find them. These are businesses that are off the main grid of companies. "Get your foot in the door". Start with a email attachment, send out your portfolio with a short summary of your reason for sending this(Scan all docs and create this in a single PDF file). What is this? Your cover letter, resume, Single page of photo's with short captions of projects, Letters of recommendation. Companies are impressed with your passion to reach out. This could create this internship.

Volunteer for organizations, non-profits, or community projects that align with your values or interests. Volunteering can provide hands-on experience, networking opportunities, and a chance to contribute to meaningful causes while gaining relevant skills.

Another way to look at this, would be that internships may also be viewed as something that demonstrates your commitment to own your career path. Although an internship outside your field, may not seem as valuable, it does have the potential to broaden your scope of potential opportunities and experiences that maybe desired by potential employers inside your field. Finally, one of the things I often remind folks is that you can’t microwave experience - you have to get it. :)

The truth is that it doesn't matter what your internship is, but more about what you can learn from it and apply to the next role. If you're doing an internship, you're unlikely to have experienced enough to know what you do or don't like. This should be liberating because it gives you the opportunity to go in with an open mind – about who you meet, what you learn etc. I did three internships while studying, and I've really only spent time in one of those fields since. I also didn't intern in any of my academic pursuits. All in all, be there to learn and meet people. Nearly a decade later, and I'm still on speaking terms with several of my bosses from that time!
