Daytona police chief caught with gun in luggage

The Associated Press

DAYTONA BEACH |  Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood says he mistakenly put his .38-caliber revolver in the wrong bag while on his way to Orlando International Airport and was stopped by TSA officers who spotted it in his carry-on.

Chitwood told the Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1tNjbLA ) on Wednesday that he'd "never felt so embarrassed and stupid" as he did last week when he saw two Orlando police officers waiting for him as he walked through the metal detectors last Thursday.

Chitwood explained that he'd been in a hurry after work and placed the gun in the wrong bag as he headed to the airport. An officer walked Chitwood to his car, where he stored the gun in his trunk.

He says he called the city manager to inform him of the mistake.
