Creature with the Atom Brain (1955)
THE ZOMBIE GANGSTERS WILL GET YOU!
Only Curt Siodmak could have written something like this, known for chillers, like the WOLF MAN.
Tag this for originality; a sci fi slash gangster film. Creative writing 101, and all us kids back in the day loved it. This was actually co-billed with IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, the cult octopus film classic. Not surprisingly, this film also gained a dedicated following. A one of a kind.
Popular character actor Gregory Gaye plays Dr. Steigg, an ex Nazi scientist! -- who can bring dead people back to life as ZOMBIES. The neat thing is many of the dead are gangsters, ready to shoot to kill. You have to see this in action as there are several over the TOP scenes, and the zombies are incredibly fun. Applause to the makeup department.
Credit the Triple AAA direction to Edward L. Cahn, famous for 50s thrillers and sci fi productions. Cahn was a master at adventure, never letting his audience down.
10 Stars.
Super cast with handsome Richard Denning (who always looked like the hero) playing good guy Chet, Angela Stevens as his wife. Stevens was featured in many 50s films, a familiar face. Good support from S. John Launer (as Dave), one of those actors you recognize, but never know his name. Launer usually was cast as judges and businessmen for decades. Pierre Watkin, another staple in classic films, plays the town mayor.
May --to a degree -- have inspired NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. The walking dead zombies are unforgettable. The posters for this film are colectors items, the artwork is fantastic.
An addictive pleasure for sci fi buffs, this is one film you'll want to see again. Always on remastered dvd.
A Halloween favorite.
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Forecast: Low Clouds and Coastal Fog (1963)
FORECAST: A LOT OF TROUBLE.
This has the feel of an episode from HAWAIIN EYE, replete with surfers, popular cop show at the time. Who better to direct than Charles Haas, who headed that series.
Lovely Inger Stevens is at her desperate best, remembered for her famous appearance on the TWILIGHT ZONE, as a driver who meets an ominous hitch-hiker. Instead of one person, Stevens (portraying Karen) has a lot of company in this high drama. She plays a housewife left alone by her husband (Simon Scott) in their lonely beach house -- surprised by a knock at the door. And more to come.
I agree with the last reviewer, its all foggy and creepy, but the acting is what will keep you glued to the story. Karen has the luck of meeting some surfer dudes, HOWEVER, a desperate man named Sanchez (well played by Christopher Dark), really needs her help, and she locks him out. Consequences!
Dark, whose career was cut short and passed suddenly in the early 70s, is excellent in this role, as is actor Richael Jaeckel (Tom), popular both on tv and movies. Dan O'Herlihy also guest stars, and this episode marks the acting debut of Greg Morris, playing a doctor.
Top writing by Lee Erwin, behind many tv adventures, like SEA HUNT, and a long time writer for PEYTON PLACE.
Erwin and Haas were a wise choice by Hitch to handle this material. They got the job done, as you will see -- and the ending is a gem. You will remember this one.
Did you catch it? In the hospital waiting room scene, there's a guy reading a newspaper --but you can't see his face. Strange the actor wouldn't be seen, which brings the question. Was that Hitch, pulling a fast one? He would do stuff like that.
Recommended for fans of Inger Stevens. Best of SEASON 1 EPISODE 17 remastered. Note, according to Amazon, the series was also released on dvd in Europe and may not play on American made dvd players. Always check with the seller.
The Beverly Hillbillies: The Marriage Machine (1967)
COMPUTER HILLBILLY DATING?
Lots of sitcoms used the old computer dating gag; lots of weird possibilities. Series writer Mark Tuttle did some creative writing here, just outrageous as you would expect.
Since Granny's "love potion" ain't too successful... why not go modern and try computer dating? The catch is it's for BOTH Jed and Jethro. Of course, the laughs are always with Jethro -- a genuinely one of a kind client who walks into the dating office, right?
Tuttle slides in some hilarious dialogue; the Q & A session, like WHAT type of hobbies does Jethro enjoy. Answer: Chasing squirrels? More confusion when the dates arrive at the mansion, and WHO is matched for Jed and WHO is matched for Jethro? What's amazing is the dating service would actually send someone out in the first place! Really wild stuff, and some very good acting on everybodys part. The cast is having fun with this one. It shows.
Guest stars veteran Lurene Tuttle as Glady and Warrene Ott as Linda. Warrene was popular on tv at the time, and made three appearances on the show.
Best dressed award (without fail) goes to Miss Jane. Don't know if Nancy Kulp chose her own clothes, or the producers supplied them, but she is dressed to impress, a smart wardrobe, even her purse is 60s stylish. As a kid, I thought Miss Jane was one classy lady, and drove a cool red convertible. Thank you, Nancy Kulp for setting the trend.
Best of SEASON 5 EPISODE 21 remastered color CBS/Paramount. The dvd box cover has a fancy dress family photo you have to see. Seasons 6 through 9 will be remastered on blu ray and released in 2027.
The Beverly Hillbillies: The Indians Are Coming (1967)
JOHN WAYNE VISITS GRANNY?
MUST SEE TV.
Incredibly funny, and one of the most famous episodes, thanks to the winning team of Paul Henning and Buddy Atkinson, who made this sitcom what it is. Henning also created the series, without too much surprise.
A story that had to be coming, especially since Jed and Granny kept in touch with the good folks back home in Bug Tussle. It's all about the boundary of the Clampetts oil land, and a dispute with an Indian reservation. Granny mistakes it for a DECLARATION OF WAR against her family!
Representatives Chief Running Wolf (veteran character Stanley Waxman) and Little Fox (played by young John Considine) want to negotiate the real estate part of the deal, while Granny prepares for battle -- just like in the old west! I agree with the last reviewer, Granny and Mr. Drysdale have the craziest scenes together. They are NUTS.
I wouldn't be surprised if Henning and Atkinson were western fans, thus writing a bit role for none other than JOHN WAYNE to compliment the insanity.
He does, although his part at the end is brief. But we'll take what we can get. Reportedly, Wayne asked for no salary, only a bottle of Jack Daniels! Super trivia question.
By the way, it has been bantered about where the name of Bug Tussle came from. There actually is a small town called Bug Tussle in Texas, also in Alabama, Kentucky and Oklahoma. So Paul Henning did, in fact, do his homework.
SEASON 5 EPISODE 20 remastered color CBS/Paramount dvd box set. 4 dvd set. Classic box cover with a family portrait of everybody in their Sunday clothes! Seasons 6 through 9 will be remastered on blue ray, according to Amazon, in 2027.
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: The Tender Poisoner (1962)
A HITCHCOCK SOAP OPERA.
This strange story will remind you a bit of PEYTON PLACE, only more diabolical, and that's what Hitch was looking for.
The cast shines, everyone doing their best to put one over on the next guy. Howard Duff plays Peter, a gentleman of honorable qualities! -- who attempts to save his good friend's (Dan Dailey) faltering marriage and put an end to his affair. Quite a guy.
Now for the Hitch switch; Peter wants Dailey's secret love (played by Bettye Ackerman) all to himself!
Keep an eye on marvelous Jan Sterling, playing Beatrice, Dailey's wife -- who is ALSO having a fling on the side with handsome Philip Terry.
What do you think about this? Guaranteed to keep you entertained if not in suspense -- did we mention poison? Stay tuned. You have to admit, it's fun to see song and dance man Dan Dailey in this type of role.
Both Dailey and Sterling were Oscar nominees in their careers.
Hitch had one of the very best writers put this together, Lukas Heller, behind two of Bette Davis' greatest films, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE and HUSH, HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE. How can you miss with all this talent.
A gem, especially for how it all ends. SEASON 1 EPISODE 14. According to Amazon, some of the dvd box sets (Region 2) were produced in Europe and may not play on American made dvd players. Best to check with the seller.
Night Court (1932)
THE JUDGE WHOSE DAYS ARE NUMBERED!
A solid role for gruff Walter Huston, the actor you love to hate, and he is quite effective here, thanks to the masterful direction of W. S. Van Dyke.
Judge Moffett (Huston) is as dastardly as they come, and with connections to some really brutal guys.
Also a showcase for beautiful leading lady Anita Page, playing a young wife and mother who has the goods on Moffett, which leads to the judge declaring war on both her and her husband, played by Phillips Holmes, a staple in many films of the 30s.
Am exercise in human nature at its very worst, perhaps the most dramatic, if not over zealous role for Huston. Applause for Lewis Stone as the crusading lawman out to nail him, playing the role of judge Osgood. Don't y'all love that name!
Fine direction by Van Dyke, billed as "one take," who had the knack for filming everything in usually a single take -- and the cast and crew loved this guy. Van Dyke soon directed the THIN MAN series with lots of style. One of Hollywood's fondly remembered directors, nicknamed "Woody."
Always on remastered dvd. Thanks much to TCM for running this unforgettable oldie.
My Three Sons: One of Our Moose Is Missing (1964)
STEVE, THE CUB SCOUTS AND A MOOSE?
Classic MY THREE SONS adventure, pulling out all the stops, and very scenic, following the famous Ireland episode.
Steve promises Chip and Ernie he will guide their Cub Scout troop -- who are in search of a genuine moose? Business prevails, requiring Steve to finish a project with short-fuse associate George, played for laughs by incomporable Allyn Joslyn. Joslyn, who appeared in scores of classic films, is a scene stealer, playing his usual fussy, frustrated self. An unforgettable actor and comedian.
Not to let Chip and Ernie down, Steve talks George into a "working mini vacation," where they will both lead the scouts while finishing up their personal business? George ends up telling ghost stories to the scouts -- and having fun in his own miserable way -- while Steve falls into an abandoned well. Listen for the moose sounds.
Great writing on the part of Seamon Jacobs, who wrote a ton of material for Bob Hope on tv. Look for Kim Tyler as Peter, one of the scouts, who co-starred on PLEASE, DON'T EAT THE DAISIES.
Excellent direction from James V. Kern, who just let the camera roll on Allyn Joslyn. SEASON 5 EPISODE 6 remastered dvd box set. Released 2020. 3 dvd set. Super color cover photo.
My Three Sons: Dublin's Fair City: Part 1 (1964)
BUB IN THE MONEY!
PART 1. 10 Stars.
Famous episode all about Bub WINNING the Irish Sweepstakes, which is a miracle in itself! Bub receives an envelope in the mail and a check -- although we don't get to see the exact amount. Whatever the case, Bub, both grateful and sentimental, decides to take Steve and the boys on a special trip to visit their ancestors in Ireland!
Beautifully written, thanks to series writer George Tibbles, who wrote some classic material for the show through the years. The only debit is the episode was not filmed in color. Although it's obvious it wasn't filmed in Ireland, the background shots -- what looks to be Griffith Park in Hollywood or nearby Beverly Hills, is tastefully done.
Once they fly out to Ireland, Bub introduces everyone to the elders, foremost 103 year old Aunt Kate, well played by a feisty Jeannette Nolan, who at times acts a bit like Granny on the BEVERLY HILLBILLIES? Popular character actor Robert Emhardt plays Mickey O'Casey, also quick on his feet.
Young Mariette Hartley (Mary) passes by on her bike, who just happens to strike up a friendship with Steve. You know they had to squeeze that in.
Lots of fun here, and quite a change of pace, even more scenic with Part II, the conclusion. Stay tuned.
Interestingly, Tibbles may have been inspired from an episode of the game show I'VE GOT A SECRET, the previous year. A woman guest had won $140,000 dollars in the Irish Sweepstakes, but had to pay at least 100,000 dollars in taxes. Still, she had 40,000 dollars after taxes, which would equal about 400,000 dollars today.
If that's the case, Bub was a wealthy man in TV Land. Of course, in subsequent episodes it looks like all that money just sat in the bank!
SEASON 5 EPISODE 4 remastered dvd box set. Vol. 1 and 2. 3 dvd each. Released 2020. Super family photo on the cover.
My Three Sons: Tramp Goes to Hollywood (1964)
TRAMP THE NEXT BIG STAR?
Dedicated to all us Tramp fans, and a neat story built around our four legged hero who we all loved.
A take-off on Hollywood, the fleeting fame and all the wild twists that come with it -- even for a dog. Popular actor Phillip Pine plays Gordon, a director who happens to be in the neighborhood(?) -- and spots Tramp. He's making a movie, all about a talented and photogenic dog and thinks Tramp would be PERFECT in the lead. Absolutely amazing!
While Steve is working, Bub, Robbie and Chip fly out with Tramp to Hollywood and watch him film a goofy screen test. This is the hilarious part, and there's some wild scenes. Most original is a hurricane-like scene with Robbie. Gordon turns up the fans and has Robbie desperately trying to hold on to Tramp in a hurricane. After what Robbie went
through, he should have also been given a screen test!
Lots of goofy dialogue, and Pine gets the best lines, without too much surprise. He later played villains in cop shows, and its kind of interesting to see him in this type of role. Look for pretty Joy Harmon as Robbie's Hollywood gal friend. Joy was a fixture in many sitcoms and movies in the 60s, discovered by Groucho Marx. Today she runs a popular bakery in Burbank.
Thanks much to CATCHY TV for running this classic series, especially a weekend marathon of episodes.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 34 remastered dvd box set. Released 2019. 3 dvd set. Volumes 1 and 2.
My Three Sons: Guest in the House (1964)
WHO ARE YOU AND WHO ARE YOU?
A mystery --of sorts -- coupled with guest star Tony Dow, from LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. Very good writing on the part of John McGreevy, who later wrote for the WALTONS.
It's do a good deed week and Steve is asked to take in a juvenile delinquent and introduce him to a stable homelife. Nothing ever turns out right, right? Steve is called away on business, the delinquent is
put on hold and enter a mysterious young man called Gilbert, played by Tony Dow.
It turns out that Bub -- who is also away on a fishing trip -- has a friend who has a nephew (Gilbert) who has a bad case of hayfever and sends him over to their house to recuperate. Tell that to Mike, Robbie and Chip, who think Gilbert's the juvie! Laugh out loud stuff, especially when they follow Gilbert around the house, watching EVERY move he makes, thinking he's gonna' steal something!
A great episode, and really neat to see Tony Dow on the show, who must have had lots of fun with the cast. Also listen to the goofy background music, especially when Gilbert is cooking up breakfast in the kitchen? Thanks to composer Frank De Vol, who worked on a ton of sitcoms.
Frank Gerstle, without too much surprise, plays a cop asking lots of questions. Yes, I agree with the last reviewer, they should have had another episode with Gilbert, sort of to make it up to him after all the suspicion and finger pointing.
A tribute to both Tim Considine and Tony Dow who both passed in 2022. They are missed.
Best of SEASON 4 remastered dvd box set. Released 2019. 3 dvd set with a super photo of Fred MacMurray on the cover.
My Three Sons: The Tree (1964)
THE BUB AND MARY STORY.
Any story with Bub is a super story, thanks to William Frawley. One heck of a character actor.
In this case, it's all about a BIG, OLD tree that's in the way. Robbie's gal pal, Juliette Johnson (Cheryl Holdridge) has a father who wants to cut the darn thing down. But the tree has historical significance -- for Bub! It turns out he carved his name and his future wife's (Mary) name in the tree a long time ago, like back in 1909!
Mary has since passed, and it means a lot to him.
Not too much surprise, Bub joins the picket line --right in front of Mr. Johnson's (Paul Barselou) house. Also causing some concern for Robbie and Juliette.
What a mess, and you absolutely have to see this one through.
Funny scene with Bub (in a raincoat), Mr. Johnson and a hose gone WILD!
Good support from pretty Cheryl Holdridge, who appeared three times on the show, also known for playing Wally's girlfriend on LEAVE IT TO BEAVER.
Note, we also get to know the origin of Bub's name. Bub's real name is Bill, but Chip (when he was a baby), called him Bub. Good trivia question.
Thank you so much to CATCHY TV for rerunning this grand dad of sitcoms. SEASON 4 EPISODE 29 remastered dvd box set. Released 2019. 3 dvd set.
The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Sam Pomerantz Scandals (1963)
FAMOUS LAUREL AND HARDY EPISODE.
If you're a vintage comedy buff, this is the episode to see. You had to credit Carl Reiner for writing some truly original material, although Dick Van Dyke gave him a few pointers. Indeed.
Dick was a long time fan of comedian Stan Laurel, and through a bizarre circumstance actually got to meet the retired comedian at his home in Santa Monica. Dick recounts how he actually found his number in a phone directory! -- called Stan and reached him. What luck! The rest is history.
This episode salutes his childhood hero, exceptionally directed by sitcom vet Claudio Guzman. The story finds Rob, Laura, Sally, Buddy and his wife, Pickles (Joan Shawlee) heading over to his old army buddy's (Henry Calvin) resort to do a show. This is lots of fun -- but it's Dick playing Stan Laurel and Calvin as Oliver Hardy that is laugh out loud funny. A re-working of one of the team's early bits, and one that they also performed on stage. It may have also been suggested by Stan Laurel himself. Calvin, also a very good dramatic actor who played some nifty bad guys, is spot on as Oliver Hardy, complimenting Dick Van Dyke's goofy performance as Laurel 100 percent. Must See, again if you are a comedy film buff.
One of the most original and creative episodes of the series, and I'm sure it was poignant for Stan Laurel at the time, who retired completely when Oliver Hardy passed a few years earlier, and refused to appear either on film or tv. Claudio Guzman (all us kids back in the day loved his name!), was best known for directing PATTY DUKE and I DREAM OF JEANNIE. He did a marvelvous job holding down the cast.
10 Stars. SEASON 2 EPISODE 24 remastered dvd box set. Collectors Edition for fans.
My Three Sons: A Car of His Own (1963)
ROBBIE AND THE CLUNKER.
Dedicated to all us Robbie fans, and especially to the memories attached to this episode.
Lots of truth to this story, all about a guys FIRST car, and of course, trying to impress a new girlfriend. File this all under teen spirit to the max, and you have to give Robbie a whole lot of credit. Yes, I agree with the last reviewier, Robbie goes the LONG WAY around the mountain to get a car, but it also shows he's one industrious teen, and to be commended for it.
Mike is more than willing to help him out with his own jalopy, but do-it-yourself Robbie wants to earn the car -- with lots of complications, including parts and labor and bills to follow. Don Grady gives a very good performance here, and we're always rooting for Robbie because we know he had the best of intentions all the time. This is also what made Robbie such and memorable tv character, an inspiration to all us kids.
Look for pretty Brooke Bundy as Mary Lou, popular in many westerns and dramas at the time. She was a natural for any role.
As always, super direction from series director Gene Reynolds, later producer for MASH.
SEASON 4 remastered dvd box set. Volume 1. 3 dvd set. Released 2019. A great photo of Fred MacMurray on the box cover.
My Three Sons: House for Sale (1964)
MOVING TO HAWAII! ARE YOU SERIOUS?
Super memorable episode, and one that inspired other sitcoms. All about Steve having to do some work in Hawaii, and everybody is invited to go along, which at first sounds like a blast. The weather is beautiful, lots of surfing -- until a FOR SALE sign goes up in front of the house?
Everybody thought it was just a trip, but Steve is seriously considering being transferred to Hawaii. That means leaving behind lots of memories, and there's some funny flashbacks recalled, such as the famous kitchen fire!
So what to do about it? Clever Ernie rigs the house for prospective buyers. I agree with the last reviewer, this is the BEST part, beginning with the front door coming off the hinges! The stairway slowly falling apart is hilarious, and just watching Steve's befuddled, bumbling expressions are the whole show. In this scene, he reminded me much of Arthur Lake as Dagwood in the BLONDIE series. The curious question is just HOW did Ernie get this all done, and where was Bub?
Note, Tina Cole plays Robbie's gal pal, Ina, who in a few years would return as Katie, his future wife. How things change. Look for pretty Meredith MacRae as Sally, soon to co-star on PETTICOAT JUNCTION. Love Woodrow Parfrey as a perplexed real estate man. Parfrey was so good at playing off the wall characters, both nice guys and villains.
Super direction from Gene Reynolds, who directed over 70 episodes, long before producing MASH.
Note; Gene may have recommended Tina Cole for the part because both of them worked over at Warner Brothers/ABC TV. Tina was doing bits on HAWAIIAN EYE and Gene was directing.
This story may have inspired two episodes of the BRADY BUNCH. The early episode where the kids sabotage the house for a new buyer, and the famous Hawaiian vacation a few years later.
SEASON 4 EPISODE 22 remastered. DVD box set, volume 1 released 2019. 3dvds. Catch the classic color cover photo of Fred MacMurray. A Must.
Mission: Impossible: The System (1969)
PHELPS MEETS MENACING MISTER V.
Another gangster episode, but this one is tops. I agree with the last reviewers, the direction and camera work is the absolute best, a marvel to watch, especially if you are a series fan.
Unfortunately, this was the only episode directed by Robert Gist, who began his career directing PETER GUNN, and a long line of cop shows. Interestingly, Gist usually directed one or two episodes of a show and moved on to the next, but leaving classic results. This is a prime example.
In a role that may have been written for him, Val Avery (master of character roles), plays Mister V, known as Constantine Victor, a mob boss who MAY be on his way to prison. Problem is the last witness to testify against him was killed... so he has bought himself some valuable time. Enter his good friend Johnny Costa (played by James Patterson), a casino manager who could either make or break him.
Accordingly, Phelps and the team play some clever games with Costa, hoping to make him think Mister V is going to bury him too. Time to spill the beans!
Beautifully written by Robert Hamner, also the only episode he wrote for the series. Hamner is best known for creating SWAT in the 70s.
The casino set and scene here is a mini classic; high rollers flashing lots of money, and boasting some terrific camera angles, thanks to Robert Gist.
Look for Tony Giorgio as the dealer. Tony gained fame a few years later as Bruno Tattaglio in THE GODFATHER. He looks the part here. Producers liked his work and he appeared in six other episodes.
Good performance by James Patterson, and one of his last roles, who would lose a battle to cancer at the age of 40 in a few years.
As the last reviewer noted, and it's true. Cinnamon naturally is a standout in this story, a world famous model -- yet NO ONE ever seems to recognize her.
That has always been the most head-scratching mysteries about her character. Poetic license 101.
Enjoy this game. Outstanding entertainment. SEASON 3 EPISODE 15 remastered CBS/Paramount dvd box set. Collectors blue box edition.
Torture Ship (1939)
THE DOCTOR IS WAITING FOR YOU.
Thanks much to RETRO TV and their Horror Hotel Saturday night program for resurrecting this reel camp favorite. Best shown late at night!
Another macabre gem produced and directed by Victor Halperin, famous for WHITE ZOMBIE, starring Bela Lugosi. Halperin and his brother, Edward, brought some of the most bizarro tales to the screen in the 30s although this film was partly based on a short story by Jack London, called "A Thousand Deaths."
The uniqueness about this thriller is its set on a yacht, far out to sea, where distinguished, yet insane surgeon Irving Pichel seeks to cure criminal minds via a gland operation. It's obvious from the start the procedure will not be a success, however the creepy atmosphere behind it all is terrific, especially for a poverty row film. It has that camp feel.
Pichel, both a well known director and actor, is at his peak, playing eerie, stone-faced characters for years, famous for DRACULAS DAUGHTER. Two fisted Lyle Talbot plays the hero, also co-starring pretty Jacqueline Wells, known for the BLACK CAT. Wells later changed her name to Julie Bishop. Popular western and B film star Sheila Bromley plays one of Pichel's patients, known as "Poison Mary!" Look for craggy faced Skelton Knaggs aboard the torture ship, popular in Universal's FRANKENSTEIN films. The perfect passenger!
About as good as it gets for a film produced by Producers Releasing Corporations (PRC), known for westerns and low budget horrors. I agree with the last reviewer, Irving Pichel is playing a role George Zucco would likely be cast, and making the most of it.
One of the shortest running chillers, appox 56 minutes.
Originally on vhs since the beginning, later remastered on dvd, and in box sets with other select B thrillers.
Beware of Blondie (1950)
DAGWOOD, THE BLONDE AND TROUBLE.
Actually, the title for this final series episode should have been "Beware of the Blonde." More female complications here for poor Dagwood, and who else to play the shady lady in question than beautiful Adele Jergens, who appeared in a previous episode.
Jergens plays a businesswoman called Toby Clifton, who Dagwood is supposed to sign a business contract with, also involving thousands of dollars in bonds. The confusing thing here is the re-appearance of Mr. Dithers, who supposedly sold the business to Mr. Radcliffe a few years ago? Whatever the case, he
makes the same mistake AGAIN -- leaving Dagwood in charge.
Arthur Lake, without fail, is the whole show, his dumbfounded expressions are incredible. Toby and her good for nothin' partner, Adolph (best played by Douglas Fowley) work up a clever scheme to rob Dagwood. In a neat bait and switch, Dagwood winds
up at Toby's apartment -- Adolph bursts into the place and demands the bonds as "hush money" OR ELSE!
Calling Blondie to work her magic and save the day.
Director Edward Bernds has lots of fun with the cast, and there's no better actor than Douglas Fowley to play a con man. Fowley played this type of role in dozens of films. He and Adele Jergens make a good team.
I agree with the last reviewer, this may have been an old script (never filmed) that had Mr. Dithers character in it. The writers should have just changed it to Mr. Radcliffe, which would have made more sense, even though Jerome Cowan had left the series. Silent screen actor Edward Earle plays Dithers in a bit role. It would have been a better idea for producers to hire character actor Hanley Stafford, who played Dithers in the long running radio show. His voice would have been immediately recognized by fans.
Another strange thing at this time concerned Penny Singleton, who was fired from the radio show by long time sponsor Colgate. The advertising big shots apparently wanted another actress (with another style) to play the role. Why would you fire the star? This dramatic change brought an end to the radio show, without too much surprise. Arthur Lake's real life wife actually ended up playing the role of Blondie. Amazing! With the cancellation of the radio show, it was no surprise Columbia Pictures closed out the movie series.
Good support from series favorites Alyn Lockwood as Mary, the switchboard operator and comedian Dick Wessel as the bruised mailman. Edward Bernds also brought in two alumnus from the THREE STOOGES series, which he also directed. Look for Symona Boniface in a bit role and goofy Emil Sitka as a trash man.
After 12 years the series ended, but fortunately, there are reruns and many thanks to MOVIES Net for featuring these episodes on Saturday morning. Also the movie series is always available on remastered dvd.
The Mad Magician (1954)
PRICE IS THE MAD MAGICIAN.
Vincent Price defintely leads the list of acclaimed actors who portrayed fiends and villains to the max, this chiller a prime example. Madness defined.
THE MAD MAGICIAN was obviously a follow-up to the tremendous success of HOUSE OF WAX, though produced by a different studio. Popular screen writer Crane Wilbur wrote both films, and with lots of morbid creativity. I agree with the last few reviewers; the screenplays of both films are strikingly similar. Revenge sought by an insane artist who has been double-crossed. It's also the type of story where (at times), you actually find yourself rooting for the villain, although his diabolical crusade eventually has to come to an end.
Price portrays the REAL lord of illusions, the inventor of revolutionary magic tricks that are ultimately stolen by his employer. Not to fear, author Crane Wilbur shifts the message from thrills to chills when Price declares a horrific revenge and arranges for the crook to meet his fate with a buzz saw! Rest assured, more to come.
A superior cast surrounds Price; beautiful Eva Gabor, plays his unfaithful ex-wife and distinguished John Emery as his unprincipled rival. Always one in the bunch. Patrick O'Neal, who later would become one of tv's top villians, plays the police lieutenant trying to solve this bizarre case. Popular character actor Jay Novello plays Frank and Lenita Lane plays Alice, who in real life was married to Crane Wilbur. Young screen star Mary Murphy is featured (as Karen), who the same year appeared with Marlon Brando in THE WILD ONE.
A labor of love by director John Brahm, who puts Price over the top. No surprise Brahm was the driving force behind many classic TWILIGHT ZONE tv episodes, also director for Alfred Hitchcock's and Boris Karloff's tv shows. One big happy family!
Reportedly, a re-make of HANGOVER SQUARE (1945), all about a mad pianist at large, memorably played by Laird Cregar. Brahm also directed, though the screenplay was by Barre Lyndon, who brought WAR OF THE WORLDS to the screen.
Must see for devout Vincent Price fans, his next big horror hit being THE FLY and the rest is history. Always on dvd and remastered blu ray.
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Ride the Nightmare (1962)
THE WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN.
If Richard Matheson wrote it, you know it's going to be good. Matheson, who wrote some of the best TWILIGHT ZONE episodes, was hired by Hitch to write something interesting. This episode combines many elements, topped with some moody music, which was a must for Hitchcock.
Screen favorite Hugh O'Brien plays Christopher, a gentleman leading a very nice married life -- until his past comes back to haunt him. If you're series buff, this story may remind you (in part) of a classic half hour series episode that starred Richard Conte. He had a very similar existence, until his old boss suddenly appeared and wanted him to resume work as a hitman.
O'Brien is not an assassin, but he has a questionable past (and apparently some enemies) that have caught up with him and his beautiful wife, Helen, well played by Gene Rowlands. Tall and imposing John Anderson makes a terrific heavy here, portraying Adam. Matheson did a superior job in defining these characters and putting in that famous Hitch twist ending, wondering just how this is all going to turn out.
I agree with the last reviewer, these hour long episodes were well produced by Norman Lloyd, who handled most of the series episodes. They were in a class by themselves, unfortunately overshadowed by the iconic half hour series.
The closing brush fire scene is a classic, excellently filmed, perhaps the best outdoor disaster scene of the entire series.
SEASON1 EPISODE 11 remastered dvd box set. 8 dvds. Released 2016. According to Amazon, some of the dvds may not play on American made players due to the fact they were produced in Europe. Check with the seller always.
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: Day of Reckoning (1962)
I DID IT!
The creators of COLUMBO, Richard Levinson and William Link (who passed in 2020), wrote this dark comedy for Hitch, kind of poking fun at Perry Mason murder mysteries.
It starts out with a very intriguing death. In fact, some of the stories on Hitch's hour long show could have been inspired by Perry Mason. The only difference is Levinson and Link took it to the next level, a murder story in reverse.
It all takes place on yacht with a lot of folks having a good ole time. While everyone is below deck, dustraught husband Barry Sullivan is told by his tipsy wife, Felicity (Dee Hartford), that she's leaving him for somebody else. He tosses her overboard, she drowns and its all ruled an accident. Just like that.
The twist is, it's too easy. He's supported by all his friends, and even his wife's doctor claims she had a physical condition and her days were numbered! What's left for Sullivan is his guilty conscience, and that's where the fun really begins, slowly driving him nuts.
I agree with the last reviewer, Sullivan was best in this type of role, always with an aura of suspicion about him in many other roles he played, only he's NOT the suspect here when he should be! Beautifully directed by Jerry Hopper (his only episode for the series), who also directed many episodes for Perry Mason. Hitch was very clever when casting this one.
The supporting cast is dynamic; burly Claude Akins plays the sheriff, screen veteran Louis Hayward plays the judge. Hugh Marlowe plays Harold and Katharine Bard plays Sullivan's earnest sister, Caroline. Good support from KT Stevens as Alice and future soap opera star Jeremy Slate, from ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Many other familiar faces fill out this memorable episode.
Guaranteed to keep your attention. Best of SEASON 1. Remastered dvd box set. Some sets were produced in Europe and may not be playable on American made dvd players. Check with the seller and inquire about Region 2 playback.
Stowaway (1936)
IN SHANGHAI WITH SHIRLEY.
Thank you so much to MOVIES Net for running this gem, and during a Shirley Temple festival. Films all us kids grew up on back in the day when there was no cable tv.
Another outstanding comedy slash drama slash adventure. This time around Shirley (as Barbara, nicknamed Ching Ching), is a homeless kid whose missionary parents were killed in a Chinese revolution. You have to admit, Shirley broke a record for portraying orphans. She conveniently gets lost on an ocean liner bound for San Francisco and runs into playboy Robert Young (as Tommy), whose smile and charm is contageous. Young was spot on for this role, you just love the guy.
Enter beautiful Alice Faye, playing Susan, Tommy's gal friend -- and would this remarkable, out of the blue twosome make a terrific adopted pair of parents for Shirley?
If you're a movie buff, note this was one of the few movies Shirley Temple made where she played opposite a really big star, notably Alice Faye, who at the time was quite popular in her own right. She also co-starred with Shirley in POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL. It was a perfect match as they both complimented each other. In fact, production notes indicate they spent so much time together, both Shirley and Alice caught the flu, and filming had to be stopped for several weeks.
What better supporting actor would there be to guest star than Arthur Treacher (as Atkins) once again, and strict disciplinarian Helen Westley (as Mrs. Hope), who also appeared in many of Shirley's films. Look for J. Edward Bromberg playing the judge and feisty Eugene Pallette as the colonel.
What a cast.
Since production was done at the same studio (Fox),
the ocean background and Chinese sets were borrowed from CHARLIE CHAN IN SHANGHAI, and no doubt the extras also. Philip Ahn plays Sun Lo and Layne Tom, Jr. Plays a Chinese boy in the band.
Tom later turned up as Number 3 Son in the Chan films.
10 Star direction from William A. Seiter, no stranger to Shirley's films, as was writer William Conselman, who co-wrote CURLY TOP and REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM. Co-writer Arthur Sheekman also wrote for the Marx Brothers.
Fun note; Shirley learned 40 words in Mandarin Chinese for this film, and had an IQ test and scored very high.
Catch the GIANT Christmas tree at the end and Shirley singing holiday tunes. Only debit, this was not filmed in color, although in the 80s was remastered in color for tv.
Always on dvd and blu ray for the next generation of fans. And they will love it.
The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: House Guest (1962)
WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN!
One ominous screenplay, thanks to the master of suspense, and the prime reason why the series was expanded to a full hour.
First off, what a cast. See this if you are a movie and tv buff, and Alfred Hitchcock was. He watched lots of films, both comedies and dramas, for which he drew his material. It shows.
Robert Sterling, known for TOPPER, plays a devious chap who saves the life of the son (Billy Mumy) of a wealthy gentleman, played by Macdonald Carey (John Mitchell) and his wife, Sally (Peggy McCay).
Mitchell is naturally grateful, opening the door of his humble home to Ray (Sterling)... and a very deadly twist of fate. This guy is the proverbial snake in the grass.
One of those stories that has many possibilities, but with Hitch, the only way is "watch your back..." I agree with the last reviewer, Hitch probably had this part especially written for Sterling, and he makes the most of this offbeat role.
Always a treat to see Macdonald Carey, and popular tv actress Peggy McCay, who could play some terrific roles. Look for former 40s pinup Adele Mara, playing Eve. Adele was in many classic films that showed off her beauty. Two outstanding veterans, Robert Armstrong (KING KONG) plays Captain Faulkner and look for rough and ready Karl Swenson as George. You can bet Armstrong singed a few autographs.
Must see entertainment, especially as to how this suburban nightmare ends. Thanks again to fine direction by Alan Crosland, Jr, just like his famous dad.
SEASON 1 EPISODE 9 remastered. According to Amazon, many of the dvd box sets were produced in Europe and may not be formatted for American made dvd players. Best to ask the seller, concerning Region 2 playback. Thank you again to METV for running these episodes, which were not as widely run as the classic half hour tv series.
Susannah of the Mounties (1939)
SHIRLEY, RANDOLPH SCOTT AND INDIANS!
MUST SEE for Shirley Temple fans, old and newcomers. 10 Stars.
This film is a defined labor of love. Lots of meticulous workmanship in this production, thanks to master director Wlliam A. Seiter, who had previously directed Shirley in THE LITTLE PRINCESS.
The story is simple, but adventurous. Shirley is orphaned in a renegade Indian attack and is adopted by heroic Monty (best played by Randolph Scott) and his devoted fiancee, Vicky, played by Margaret Lockwood. What folows is the ultimate western, guns-a-blazin' and lots of Indians on the warpath.
Seiter's direction is outstanding, considering the large cast, and with some top supporting players. Victor Jory is a standout as angry Wolf Pelt. J. Farrell MacDonald always fun to watch as the old commander, a role fit for his talents. What else is there to say about handsome Randolph Scott, except he makes a marvelous step dad for Shirley, and you can tell they enjoy each others company.
Margaret Lockwood, also quite good in her co-starring role, gained famed a year earlier with the LADY VANISHES for Hitchcock.
Dynamic writing by the dream screen team of Robert Ellis and Helen Logan, behind so many classic CHARLIE CHAN films at Fox.
Two UNFORGETTABLE scenes; Shirley teaching Scott to dance (with a book on his head!) and the legendary "peace pipe" scene with Shirley and teenage Little Chief. Was that tobaccco in the pipe or something stronger? A long time question!
This was the only film appearance of Martin Good Rider, who was of Indian heritage, born on a reservation in Montana. He was memorable as Little Chief. We loved him. Shirley and Martin became good friends and she was honored by his large Indian family. Martin tragically died in a car crash at the age of 41 in 1966, leaving behind a young son, who passed not too long after him.
Never ever to be missed. Shirley and Scott are incredible. Always on dvd and remastered blu ray. Thank you so much to MOVIES Net for running this golden oldie with so many of Shirley's other films.
The Secret Six (1931)
WALLACE BEERY AS AL CAPONE.
The dream team of director George W. Hill and his wife, screenwriter Francis Marion mastered this essay on the rise and fall of a mob boss, based on the real-life exploits of Al Capone, destined for a life in prison for tax fraud.
Rough and tough Wallace Beery is perfectly cast as "Slaugherhouse" Scorpio (and want an original name!), who rises through the ranks to become the king of crime. A fascinating story from start to finish, and with some memorable characters; early starring role for Clark Gable as Carl, one of the undercover reporters out to bring Scorpio down. Screen debut of Ralph Bellamy, showing off his acting skills from the start. Producer Irving Thalberg, impressed with Gable, added more body to his role to give him additional screen time. A wise choice, and Gable makes the most of it.
Excellent performance by Jean Harlow as a waitress (Anne), torn between good guy repoter Johnny Mack Brown (Hank), who like Carl, is determined to get the goods on Scorpio -- while at the same time attracted to the bad man Beery, his wealth and power.
A film you will not too soon forget, and enormously popular, the clever title alone, the hook to get you to see it. One of Hill's final projects before his tragic death, a shock to Hollywood as he was at the peak of his career. Wallace Beery would follow this classic with another, THE CHAMP, for which he won an Oscar.
Always on dvd and remastered blu ray. Thanks again to TCM for running this golden oldie for years.
China Seas (1935)
GABLE AND HARLOW. PERIOD.
Dedicated to fans of high adventure. This is it, and perhaps the most rerun of all of Jean Harlow's movies. A true labor of love for MGM producer Irving Thalberg, who had been working on the screenplay for nearly five years, since the death of British author Crosbie Garstin, based on his novel. Garstin, known to be a very good swimmer, drowned and his body was never found. Thalberg should have later did a mystery movie about Garstin.
The focus is on Clark Gable, playing Alan Gaskell, the two fisted captain of an ill-fated steamship enroute to China. He has woman problems --brought on by ex-gal pal Dolly (Jean Harlow), pirates searching for gold and a raging typhoon to make matters even more deadly.
Rosalind Russell is very good as Gable's "refined" new girlfriend, Sybil, naturally sparking a jealous streak with tough cookie Dolly, who happens to be in cahoots with no-account thief Jamsey, memorably played by tough as leather Wallace Beery. Beautifully directed by Ty Garnett, best known for the POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE. Garnett puts the cast to work, right down to the supporting roles. Acting 101 defined. Gable reportedly did some of his own stunts.
Featuring three ace character actors; Dudley Digges, distinguished C. Aubrey Smith as Sir Guy, and comedian Robert Benchley, best as a drunk caught up in the mayhem.
Should have gotten an Oscar nom for Best Story, considering all the work behind the scenes to make it click. The color movie poster, long a collectors item for the artwork. Forever remastered on dvd and blu ray. Thanks to TCM for faithfully rerunning this gem for years.
