I thoroughly enjoyed this series for several episodes, especially before I fell down the rabbit hole of reading review titles with the major spoiler instead of putting the spoiler down in the body of the review where it belongs. Thanks for ruining the series for me before I even got going 🙄
Having said that, it is a great series in many respects. The first few episodes are especially good with a lot of action and a lot of witty lines and dialogue. I'm currently on season 1 episode 14 and I find myself a little bored. They have brought in way too much dialogue and have too many regular characters.
The whole thing with Riggs losing his wife and interacting with this psychiatrist is losing its novelty. I don't mean that the situation is unbelievable because it actually is very believable. Losing someone like that can take years to find a new sense of purpose. But Riggs is a former Navy seal with a lot more than just the aching heart bothering him so I'm not sure why they're so focused on that. And if Riggs is a brunette man why is he suddenly going for a blond? Mel Gibson was much better in the part, he had a truly believable way of seeming out of control and high strung. Crawford does a great job and sells the character well but there are parts where I found myself thinking "that scene was written with Gibson in mind," and Crawford couldn't pull it off. But he is a great character.
Glover was also much more believable and interesting as Murtaugh. Wyans doesn't sell the part for me. While Glover portrayed him as an older black man with the tag line "I'm too old for this (stuff)", Wyans is trying to play it as a vanilla snob making what should be witty interactions feel more like condescention. And the wife Trish is far too prominent in the series. Trish is a kind of conundrum because we like her a lot at times but she is overbearing and unlikable at other times. Murtaugh is a competent detective but at home he's treated insincerely.
It's definitely a sign of the times where the parents feel they don't have the right to go through their child's belongings or track them on their phone. We are seeing the results of this style of parenting now in 2024 where entitled undisciplined kids are now adults voting to overturn our Constitution and squander our wealth. But I digress.
The introduction of Getz is clearly an attempt to add their own Saul Goodman. He's actually a good character.
I'd prefer more action and less recycling the same dialog and problems. Going in a bit more but not sure I'll finish.
