Killer Tango was a challenge for Director Antonio Chavez Trejo. He never wrote a dark comedy but this kind of humor has always been an important part of his life.
He has a fascination about Serial Killer stories because in his own words he find them incredible interesting as characters: "You could take any of their stories and make them into a movie; it's a terrible thing what they do, but trying to find their reasons why they do it or how the became the way they are is a fantastic journey through the darkest corners of the human mind" Antonio said.
Writing a story of a Serial Killer who was into Tango as his way of killing his victims was an idea that came during a night of insomnia. "I had to be on set by 7 am so while I was taking a shower at 5 am suddenly I started listening to Tango music in my head. I knew I was going to write a story about a killer, actually the original ideas I was writing at that time was a story about a Hit Man, but then when the Tango music played in my head I knew this was going to be related to my new script. That day I listen to Tango music without stopping by the end of my working day on set I went back home and wrote the first draft of Killer Tango until I finished. My insomnia disappear".
The funny thing is that the day before he meet Robert Mark (writer of Taken and Karate Kid) and asked him how he dealt with disappointment. He then answered: "I don't deal with it, the only thing I care about from the moment I wake up is where am I going to have dinner". This is where Antonio said he absolutely understood what he meant and never had trouble writing again ever since.
