Pia Zadora in Butterfly (1981)
The Open Reel Swoops on Doc ‘Born to be Born’ by ‘Tchindas’ Director Pablo Garcia (Exclusive)
Pia Zadora in Butterfly (1981)
Leading Italian sales company The Open Reel has snagged the international sales rights to Pablo Garcia Perez de Lara’s latest doc, “Born to be Born,” ahead of its world premiere at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.

Doc revolves around a progressive public school, the Escola Congrés-Indians, in Garcia’s native Barcelona, where preparations for an end-of-year trip of the school’s first graduating class are underway. Children learn at their own pace in the primary school which instills, above all, the values of respect and empathy for other people.

“I was struck by the director’s ability to discreetly document the important educational role that the school and its educators play with these young students,” said The Open Reel founder Cosimo Santoro, adding: “They guide them through understanding and dialogue in every phase of their discussions and through any possible conflicts that may arise.”

Garcia has trained...

Taiwan’s Lgbtq Streamer GagaOOLala Launches Worldwide
Image
Lgbtq-focused streaming platform GagaOOLala officially launched worldwide Friday in all territories except for China and North Korea.

The streamer is backed by Taipei-based Portico Media, one of the co-founders of the Taiwan International Queer Film Festival. Its launch comes a week before the one-year anniversary of the day Taiwan became the first in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.

GagaOOLala is now available worldwide for $6.99 a month. All films currently are equipped with English and Chinese subtitles, with other languages pending as the company monitors content popularity in different regions. It debuts in the U.S. with around 300 titles to start; in Taiwan, it has around 1,000 films.

Although a bit player compared to the other giants in the global streaming wars, Portico Media CEO Jay Lin says he feels his platform has a niche.

“Of course there are Lgbt-focused services in Europe and the U.S., but they’re almost exclusively Western.

At War (2018)
Cannes Film Review: ‘At War’
At War (2018)
With their trio of prior films together, director Stéphane Brizé and actor Vincent Lindon have declared a low-key manifesto of sorts. All three — culminating in 2015’s tremendous “The Measure of a Man,” which won the Cannes Best Actor award for Lindon — are richly attentive portraits of working men fighting to protect their interpersonal relationships and to retain dignity and self-determination, in tightrope circumstances that benefit from no social safety net. To find this furious brand of class consciousness so effortlessly allied to moral class conscience is rare in modern cinema, but it makes the capital-versus-labor quandary explored in their new collaboration, “At War,” seem like a natural progression. And in Union leader, spokesperson and factory worker Laurent Amédéo, Lindon adds another rivetingly real characterization to his muscular everyman repertoire.

It begins as it continues: in a riotous, talky, argumentative scene of disbelief and dismay.. An automotive parts plant in Agen...

Hunger Games Tribute Joins Two Indie Directorial Debuts
Former All My Children star Leven Rambin kicked her movie career into gear last year with a small but pivotal role in the blockbuster adaptation of the wildly popular Ya novel The Hunger Games. In the dystopian adventure, Rambin drew notice as the beautiful but deadly tribute Glimmer from District 1. Hot on the heels of the film's release, she booked the female lead in another Ya adaptation Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters and took to the big screen again in the surfing drama Chasing Mavericks. But this summer, she'll be getting gritty within two indie dramas. Deadline reports Rambin has signed on to star in both Seven Minutes and Walter. The first will mark the writing-directing debut of storyboard artist Jay Martin, who has worked on such high-action offerings as The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Constantine and I Am Legend. Seven Minutes stars former Australian soap star Luke Mitchell as...
