A new crime thriller from Netflix has been well-received on Rotten Tomatoes. The streaming service, which is one of the biggest in the world, features a library of licensed movie and television titles, but they are best known for their original projects, which include massive hits such as Squid Game, Stranger Things, and the 2025 smash KPop Demon Hunters.
Because they produce releases in a wide variety of genres, there have been a number of major Netflix thrillers in the crime genre. While some have not been well-reviewed on Rotten Tomatoes, such as Pain Hustlers (23%) and Reptile (44%), others have been better-received, including The Irishman (95%), El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (92%), and their newest outing.

Martin Scorsese has dedicated his life to making movies, but a new documentary coming soon will turn the camera around on him and dive into critical aspects of his life, like his creative process and childhood. From acclaimed director Rebecca Miller comes Mr. Scorsese, a documentary series billed as a film portrait of a man through the lens of his work, exploring the many facets of the visionary who has redefined the world of filmmaking, both with his iconic career and deep personal history. As part of Collider's Exclusive Preview event for fall television, we’re thrilled to have had the chance to chat with director Rebecca Miller about the documentary and how she dove into such a dense filmography.
Miller spoke to us about her creative process in working with Scorsese, saying, "My first question to Scorsese was, 'What is your first memory?' – we immediately tunneled into his childhood.

Netflix has no lack of great crime movies for those looking for a great story about smash-and-grab robberies, lifetime criminals or even thieving magicians. Below, we’ve put together a curated list of some of the best crime movies on Netflix right now, ranging from Oscar-winning dramas to underseen indies and beyond. There’s a little something for everyone, which speaks to the diversity of stories inside the crime genre.
The Departed Jack Nicholson and Matt Damon in “The Departed” (Warner Bros. Pictures)
Despite being the man behind classics like “Raging Bull,” “Taxi Driver” and “The King of Comedy,” Martin Scorsese didn’t win his first Oscar until 2006’s “The Departed,” a fairly straightforward crime thriller with tremendous commercial appeal. That’s not to ding “The Departed” – the movie’s a rich and wildly entertaining crime saga – but it was surprising that it was this film that finally netted Scorsese the trophy.

Despite being its most obvious inspiration, Martin Scorsese reportedly did not like The Sopranos because of all the New Jersey trees in the show. The HBO crime drama, created by David Chase and starring Michael Gandolfini, followed Tony Soprano, the head of the crime family in New Jersey, and his everyday life. It covered not only his criminal activities but also his home life and mental health.
Chase has credited Scorsese’s Goodfellas multiple times for inspiring the show, but the filmmaker reportedly did not take to the New Jersey setting. Scorsese rejected the series, claiming that he did not understand the life Chase was trying to depict (via THR).
I think I only saw one episode … because I can’t identify with that generation of the underworld. They live in New Jersey with the big houses? I don’t get it. They use language – four-letter words – in front of their daughters,...

Two giants of cinema, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, share a bond forged in the fire of 1970s Hollywood. Recently, Pacino singled out one of De Niro’s performances as the greatest in film history—a bold claim from a man who’s seen it all. That role was Jake Lamotta in the 1980 masterpiece ‘Raging Bull’.
‘Raging Bull’ is a raw, unflinching look at the life of Lamotta, a middleweight boxing champion whose personal demons outpunched his ring opponents. Directed by Martin Scorsese, the film dives into Lamotta’s rise, fall, and search for redemption, fueled by jealousy, violence, and guilt. De Niro’s transformation was staggering—he packed on 27 kilograms to show Lamotta’s later years, earning him an Oscar for Best Actor. Pacino called it ‘mind-blowing’, saying De Niro’s work as the troubled fighter set a bar no one’s touched.

Prior to writing and directing "S1m0ne," Andrew Niccol penned 1998's delightfully existential "The Truman Show," a dramedy that was eerily clairvoyant about the ways technology would turn ordinary people into celebrities and our everyday routines into a fascinating spectacle (first via reality television and now through social media). Instead of focusing on the average individual, however, "S1m0ne" tackles similar themes but is centered on Hollywood. It predicts that our obsession with using technology to showcase our humanity would turn into artificial intelligence taking it away.
Al Pacino stars in "S1m0ne" as Viktor Taransky, a has-been director whose newest film is thrown off course when his mercurial star, Nicola Anders (Winona Ryder), quits. Casting a new lead would take time and money, so Viktor secretly uses a computer program that creates Simone (Rachel Roberts), an entirely digital star whose name is short for Simulation One. Luca Guadagnino is going to be on the road a lot in the coming months. One day after the Italian filmmaker's latest feature, After the Hunt, joined the Venice Film Festival lineup as an out of competition selection, the New York Film Festival announced that the Amazon MGM-released film will play as the opening night selection of its 63rd edition.
"We are excited to open this year’s festival with Luca Guadagnino’s latest, which confirms his status as one of the most versatile risk-takers working today," NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said in a statement. "Brilliantly acted and crafted, After the Hunt is something rare in contemporary cinema: a complex, grown-up movie with a lot on its mind that also happens to be a deeply satisfying piece of entertainment."
In his own statement, Guadagnino called NYFF "an arbiter of global cinema," and provided a quick preview of the movie's themes.

Out of all the short-lived Chuck Lorre TV shows that have been canceled rather early and abruptly after a few seasons (like the controversial-ish "United States of Al" or "B Positive"), the axing of HBO Max's "Bookie" hurts the most. Admittedly, it's more of a bummer if you're a long-time fan of the show's Italian-American lead, comedian Sebastian Maniscalco (his early stand-up specials are stone-cold bangers that deservedly made him a megastar in show business), but even if you're not, it's easy to tell that "Bookie" was different from your average Lorre sitcom.
First of all, it wasn't lukewarm broadcast television like most of his productions (which usually air on CBS), but a show specifically made for streaming. That alone gave the half-hour comedy a distinct feel and allowed it to blossom in a playground with fewer limitations. The series needed that extended freedom due to its subject matter and shady characters,...

2019 was one of the greatest years in cinema this century. Sure, many of us look back at 2019 in a fond light for ... particular reasons, but that year boasted some remarkable films to define the end of the 2010s decade. Whether you look at the Best Picture winner "Parasite," which recently topped the New York Times' 21st century list, or Martin Scorsese's stunning achievement that was "The Irishman," that year's crop of Best Picture nominees really stood out. One of the more interesting nominees for Best Picture that year came in the form of James Mangold's effortlessly entertaining drama, "Ford v Ferrari," which starred Matt Damon and Christian Bale.
"Ford v Ferrari" tells the true story of automotive designer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale), who are both hired by Ford's CEO Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) and vice president Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal...

Every so often, Brad Pitt has been prone to tickling our funny bones, whether it's being a slap-dash hitman on a "Bullet Train," cracking wise with George Clooney in the "Ocean's 11" movies, or getting ping-ponged off car hoods in "Meet Joe Black." Okay, that last one wasn't intentionally funny, but it's sure been memed enough now to make it so.
Stacking up the star's funniest works, though, and the best of the bunch in Pitt's comedic efforts, is without question the one where he was borderline indecipherable. In 2000, the Hollywood icon played a man in trouble thanks to organized bare-knuckle boxing matches and hard-nosed British gangsters when he starred in the now beloved comedy crime caper, "Snatch," the second film from now well-established director, Guy Ritchie.

Streaming films. Not only are they basically the modern equivalent of TV movies, but they’re also like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get. Unless your company’s name is Netflix, there is a significant chance you will receive not a “Tudum” but rather a “Tun Tun Tuuuum.” Even so, occasionally you might get a good or even great film that receives major awards recognition, such as “The Irishman” or “The Power of the Dog.”
Then there’s Amazon Prime Video. A platform that’s been slowly making a name for itself in the streaming arena, I would personally probably place them in second place in terms of their quality. They also got a few films that have garnered some awards, love, and wins, such as “Sound of Metal” and “Manchester by the Sea,” but they also have a few stinkers or disappointing...

The Writers Guild of America West first sentenced the film producer to its strike/unfair list in 2020, following a dispute over payments to writers on the television series Pump. Netflix’s movies – to me, anyway – always fall neatly into two categories. There are the big audience blockbusters, such as The Electric State, Carry-On, and the upcoming The Old Guard 2 and Happy Gilmore 2, and then there’s the prestige fare. Sometimes the two categories meet, such as with the Knives Out movies, but for the most part, they are distinct. As much as some of their blockbusters seem to vanish into the ether of streaming, they’ve also bankrolled some intriguing prestige fare that rank among the most acclaimed films of our era, such as Roma, Marriage Story, The Irishman, and many others. After a quiet 2024 that saw them throw all their eggs into the Emilia Perez basket, the streamer is back with a bumper crop of awards fare this year, including Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, and more.

The mafia genre isn’t easy to recreate. With classics being made by legends, fans are extremely critical of how projects choose to adapt classic tropes from the category, having a very slim margin for error. Due to this, when Rick and Morty were trying their hand at the same, one could expect that it could either be a masterpiece or a mess.
Thankfully, the Gotron Jerrysis Rickvangelion episode from the fifth season worked well for many reasons. The complexities in its storyline, Rick being consumed by his own ambition, and the conflict between Morty and Summer are a few of the reasons why the episode was so good. However, it was its loyalty to Martin Scorsese in one very big way that made the episode stand out in front of other attempts at the genre.

Barry Levinson’s The Alto Knights (2025) is a sprawling crime drama that resurrects the gritty legacy of classic mafia storytelling. Set in the volatile mid-century underworld, the film centers around the bitter fallout between Frank Costello (played by Robert De Niro) and Vito Genovese—once childhood friends, now mortal enemies. Co-starring Debra Messing, Cosmo Jarvis, and Kathrine Narducci, the film is a slow-burning epic filled with betrayal, ego, and shifting loyalties. With Levinson’s assured direction and Nicholas Pileggi’s screenplay (based on real-life events), the movie captures the cost of power and the tragic beauty of brotherhood turned sour.
If you’re drawn to movies like The Alto Knights—stories that dive deep into the psychology of gangsters, the structure of organized crime, and the humanity behind the violence—here are six gripping films that belong in your watchlist.
1. The Irishman (2019)
The Irishman is perhaps the closest spiritual companion to The Alto Knights.

One of two-time Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro's most recent big-screen endeavors is fresh off a forgettable box office run and bad reviews that make it one of his least heralded projects. However, the Hollywood legend can now enjoy his film's shot at redemption as his biographical crime drama, The Alto Knights, finds new life on streaming following its Max debut.
Per Flix Patrol,The Alto Knights ranks as the #1 film globally on Max, HBO's streaming service, outperforming Mountainhead, Mickey 17 and four installments from The Hunger Games franchise on the top 10 chart. De Niro's mob-inspired film shot to the top of Max's streaming charts just five days after debuting.

What a wild year it has been for Warner Bros. film chiefs Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca, who were nearly written off after the back-to-back box office failure of Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17 and Barry Levinson's The Alto Knights earlier this year. Things became so bad that rumors began circulating about their possible firing. But the narrative changed almost overnight with a trio of blockbusters — A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Final Destination Bloodlines. Combined, the three movies have grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. But The Alto Knightsremains the studio's biggest bomb of the year. The movie is now available to stream on Max, where it's actually doing quite well.
According to FlixPatrol, The Alto Knights was the number one movie on Max on June 10. Incidentally, it was followed by Mickey 17. Both box office underperformers beat out Jesse Armstrong's recently released satirical drama Mountainhead, which has earned negative reviews from audiences.

Al Pacino’s The Ritual Struggles With Storytelling & Style(Photo Credit –YouTube)
The Ritual started off with a shocking 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes which is a first for Al Pacino’s long and respected career. This new horror film, directed by David Midell, features Pacino alongside Dan Stevens, Ashley Greene, and Abigail Cowen. The movie stumbled critically despite the star power and has only just climbed to 8% as more reviews have come in.
Critics Slam The Ritual’s Cinematography and Storytelling
Critics pointed out that while the actors tried to bring life to the film, the cinematography fell flat and was loaded with tired exorcism clichés that made the experience dull. Reviews also mentioned that The Ritual leaned heavily on familiar horror tropes without adding anything fresh or engaging.
Joel Harley of Starbust wrote, “If it possesses anything, it’s a well-sustained atmosphere of doom and gloom, but the ugly...

Al Pacino is one of the most renowned actors in Hollywood, winning multiple accolades, including an Oscar for Best Acor for Scent of a Woman. So you can imagine the shock (but not surprise) when, in a career-first move, his latest project, The Ritual, debuted with a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score.
The Ritual is a horror movie directed by David Midell. It stars Pacino and Dan Stevens among a star-studded cast list that includes Ashley Greene (Twilight) and Abigail Cowen (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina). Unfortunately, the film received an abysmal response and, as of this writing, it has slightly increased and settled at 6% as more reviews roll in. It won't be long until the audience score is revealed.
Collider recently reviewed The Ritualand gave it a low score of 3/10. It praised the actors for making do with what they're given, but criticized the cinematography, which was lackluster and filled with every lazy exorcism trope imaginable.

Martin Scorsese created a dark and depressing ending for his 90s mobster movie Casino, and he recently doubled down on that decision. Scorsese has a big name in the gangster movie genre, with masterpieces like Goodfellas and more recent releases like The Irishman. As a film historian, he has a great respect for what came before, with gangster movies like Scarface and The Public Enemy as references for his own additions to the genre. He also loves to deconstruct genres, which is what he did with Casino.
Screen Rant was in attendance for the Casino 30th Anniversary celebration that included Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro in attendance. The two men sat down with a moderator and talked about the movie and its legacy. During the interview, the moderator asked Scorsese: "Is Vegas better when it's run by the mafia or the corporations?" Scorsese's answer was perfect (via X): "What's the difference?...

A new horror movie has earned a 0% score during its Rotten Tomatoes debut. Like any genre, horror tends to have major critical ups and downs. While many entries in the genre are well-respected classics with stellar reviews, including 2017's Get Out (which has a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes), 1991's The Silence of the Lambs (95%), 1975's Jaws (97%), and 1960's Psycho (97%), others have been widely lambasted, including 1987's Jaws: The Revenge (2%), 2002's FeardotCom (3%), and 2022's Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (3%).
However, early 2025 has been a fertile period for horror movies that are both critically and commercially successful. While April and May have seen the most success, three of the Top 20 highest-grossing movies of 2025 in general are entries in the genre, namely February's The Monkey (which has a 78% Rotten Tomatoes score and grossed $68.6 million worldwide against a reported budget of $11 million), May's Final Destination: Bloodlines, and April's Ryan Coogler's Sinners. After my back-up plan to my back-up plan crashed and burned, I wound up in “extra land.” I became a background actor — no experience required. I played everything from a creepy nun to a Hasidic Jew to John Early (albeit from behind, with a bald spot shaved into my head). It was film school on the cheap. I observed the production process up close and took copious notes. In no particular order, then, here are my 13 Commandments of Being a Background Actor. Study them wisely before even attempting to walk in my extra shoes.
Never Speak To Principal Actors That is, unless they address you first. Production can’t have, uh, Bob Wiley-adjacent types bothering actors who are preparing. Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese might now be known as the iconic actor-director duo for their recent films like The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon—but prior to these modern classics, there were epics like Raging Bull. The 1980 movie that didn’t just save De Niro’s career, but also quite literally saved Scorsese’s life.
Back in the late ’70s, when Martin Scorsese was spiraling, Robert De Niro was desperate for a win, and Hollywood was not ready for a black-and-white boxing movie based on a violent, self-destructive athlete. But somehow, against all odds, these two legends pulled off one of the greatest cinematic comebacks ever. So today let’s explore the journey of making the 1980s classic.

This summer, Dorothy and Toto are going to skip down the Yellow Brick Road in the same cutting-edge Las Vegas arena that’s hosted everything from Phish and Backstreet Boys concerts to Mma fights. That’s right, one of Hollywood’s most beloved films, “The Wizard of Oz,” is coming to the Sphere.
But updating the cinema classic for the venue’s massive 16K resolution wraparound interior LED screen required more than a dozen visual effects houses, teams of researchers and archivists, and Jane Rosenthal, the superstar producer behind “The Irishman” and “Meet the Parents.”
As part of this week’s Variety cover story, Rosenthal offered a first look at the secretive project ahead of “The Wizard of Oz at Sphere’s” Aug. 28 opening.

The 1939 version of “The Wizard of Oz” was made for a much, much smaller screen than the 160,000-foot one that the Sphere holds.

It’s Jane Rosenthal versus the jackhammer.
As the legendary producer strolls onto the patio of The Greenwich Hotel, clad in her signature blue shades, she’s visibly aghast. A small army of workers is plastering a banner and some streamers onto trees in preparation for a bridal shower scheduled for later today. The conversation we’re meant to have over lunch about her glass-ceiling-shattering career as the CEO of Tribeca Enterprises is destined to be drowned out by the din.
This won’t do! Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese’s pair is undoubtedly one of the greatest Hollywood actor-director duos ever. They have worked in 10 movies and a short film, and nearly all of them have received critical acclaim. But we could have never gotten all this if it were not for the 1973 movie, Mean Streets.
Mean Streets, directed by Scorsese and starring Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro in the lead, presented exceptional work by the entire cast and crew. It marked the start of Martin Scorsese’s contribution to the gangster genre. Interestingly, Robert De Niro, who found himself in the Oscar conversation with Mean Streets, was initially reluctant to do it.

For Robert De Niro, an industry legend with over 5 decades of cinematic brilliance under his belt, exceeding limits has never been optional. But his latest political thriller series on Netflix, Zero Day, did a lot more than just slightly stretch his muscles. The limited series demanded more out of him than any of his previous roles, and that includes his intense and physically taxing performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman.
The statement comes as a bit of a shock, honestly, given the marathon production and modern de-aging tech used in the 2019 hit. But with Zero Day, De Niro wasn’t just burdened with workload; it was the intense psychological depth, the ruthless shooting schedules, and the colossal task of justly portraying a former United States president navigating a country on the brink.

The wild, hydrated life of skincare guru to the stars Ole Henriksen is being prepped for the big screen.
The 74-year-old is the subject of a new biopic project mounted by frequent Martin Scorsese collaborator Niels Juul through his No Fat Ego along with author-turned-screenwriter James Wyllie. The news was announced during the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday morning at a press event aboard the Lady Jersey yacht docked on the Albert Edouard jetée in the city’s old port. Henriksen took a seat on a sofa on the yacht’s upper deck where he participated in a panel discussion about the vision for the project alongside his creative collaborators.
“It’s been two years in the making,” Juul told The Hollywood Reporter of the project which is in the early stages and does not have a director or talent attached but does have a finished screenplay from Wyllie reportedly titled The Glowing Man.
