- TriviaThe first episode to open with "Cheers is filmed before a live studio audience"
- GoofsThe group is having a discussion about the next president, in walks Tibor Svetkovic, a local hockey player. Diane doesn't know who this is and sarcastically asks everyone if he's going to be the president (because of the earlier conversation) in 1990. There wouldn't be a presidential election that year, the election would be either in 1988 or 1992.
- Quotes
[the gang are talking about predicting who the next president will be]
Cliff Clavin: I've got a pet little theory about that. You see, if you go back in history and take every president, you'll find that the numerical value of each letter in their last name was equally divisible into the year in which they were elected.
Paul: So who's going to win, Cliff? Reagan again?
Norm Peterson: What, Mondale?
Cliff Clavin: No, no, not a chance. You see, I figured it out. By my calculations, the next president has to be named Yelnik McWawa.
Sam Malone: That's the stupidest name I've ever heard.
Ernie 'Coach' Pantusso: Sam, please. You're talking about our next president.

What's odd is Diane's reaction. While she's obviously jealous of Lana, she seems to be be genuinely concerned for Sam's feelings. Also, Sam is showing a bit of growth. He knows he's being used by Lana, and while he goes along with it he's starting to feel not so great about the arrangement. (It seems weird now that Barbara Babcock, who was 45 at the time, was seen as "old" back then!)
There's a lot of funny bits here, especially Coach's technique to get Sam to wake up and smell the coffee. This is also the episode with the famous "Yelnik McWawa" joke. It has nothing to do with the rest of the story, but it's funny.
(One more thing: the joke in the beer commercial - Sam substituting for another "pitcher" - is pretty good.)
