October was huge for Disney+ and Hulu — but which month isn’t? After the weekly installments of “Agatha All Along” and the staple that is Huluween, the bundled streamers gear up for winter programming this November.
Disney+ continues to be the home for live episodes of “Dancing With the Stars” and the original series “Ayla & The Mirrors,” which continues to air new episodes. Along with new children’s programming and holiday specials like “An Almost Christmas Story,” the streamer will premiere “The Music of John Williams” on November 1, celebrating the acclaimed film composer and his decades-long career with new footage and interviews from those he worked with and inspired.
It’s another big month for movies coming to Hulu, as well as beloved shows like “Ally McBeal” (complete series). Stay tuned for an adaptation of Charles Yu’s “Interior Chinatown” and the docuseries “It’s All Country,” as well as...

Seventeen years after we last followed historian, cryptographer, and treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates (played by Nicolas Cage) on an adventure, we might finally be getting a new sequel to the 2004 film National Treasure and its 2007 follow-up National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. Although producer Jerry Bruckheimer said two years ago that there was a “really good” script in place and awaiting Cage’s approval, it must not have met his approval, because screenwriter Ted Elliott revealed to the National Treasure Hunt podcast that he has been working on the project for the last year and recently completed his first draft of the script.
During his interview on the podcast, Elliott confirmed that his script is complete and ready for revisions and teased that he has written “familiar faces” into the story beyond the returning main characters of Ben Gates, computer expert and author Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), Dr. Abigail...

Animation continue to the be hero of the summer office thanks to Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2, but Neon’s Longlegs can rightly take a bow after scoring the biggest opening for an independent horror pic in a decade with $22.6 million in ticket sales.
From Illumination and Universal, DM4 easily stayed atop the domestic box office chart in its second weekend with $44.7 million from 4,449 theaters as it jumped the $200 million mark to finish Sunday with a North American tally of $211.1 million. Overseas, Gru and the mischievous Minions also continued to stir up strong sales, earning $88 million from 78 markets for a foreign tally of $226.7 million and $437.8 million globally.
In a notable milestone, the Despicable Me/Minions franchise has crossed $5 billion mark in global ticket sales, a feat no animated franchise has achieved before. (Earlier this week, Illumination announced that a Minions 3 is in the works.)

Nicolas Cage deserves at least one more installment to his action adventure National Treasure franchise. However, even after 17 years of the release of the second installment, the updates on the movie franchise have been vehemently silent. While most fans want National Treasure to be a trilogy, Cage would need an addition of one more movie to complement that.

National Treasure has been quite a success, but Disney somewhat moved away from the movie series. While the studio put the Cage’s franchise into a coma, a new Dinesy show, National Treasure: Edge of History, was at work but not featuring Cage. After one season, the show was canceled. Now, fans finally have a positive update on the original franchise.

Despite Nicolas Cage’s vehement remarks about not being game for a National Treasure 3, director Jon Turteltaub is confident the project is happening, with the original cast along for the ride. Speaking with the National Treasure Hunt podcast, Turteltaub said he’s “100%” confident the sequel could happen with the original cast intact, including Cage, but they’ll need to act fast to get it made.
“100%. … We do have to hurry because people are both getting older and less interested and lives are changing and all that. And the world changes,” Turteltaub explained to the National Treasure Hunt podcast. “Our culture is changing. A lot. Since the first movie was made. Socially, certainly politically, and definitely, our language, and different cultural changes we’ve had. And you’ve got to make sure you’re in touch with all that and moving with it, and doing things the right way. … It...

Michael Keaton takes on another hitman role in his new directorial venture, Knox Goes Away. Keaton played a hitman in his directorial debut, The Merry Gentleman, in 2008. The Batman actor revealed that he wouldn’t have taken on the script by Gregory Poirier if he thought the film would not hold up. For Keaton, the film was like a game of Jenga, where every piece had to work for the movie to work.

Knox Goes Away also stars Al Pacino, James Marsden, Marcia Gay Harden, Suzy Nakamura, and John Hoogenakker among others. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2023.

Nathan Drake and Lara Croft could be Hollywood’s go-to treasure hunters until someone else comes along because, according to Nicolas Cage, a National Treasure 3 is not happening. Cage played treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates in Disney’s 2004 action-adventure romp, with National Treasure: Book of Secrets mapping a path to theaters in 2007.
Speaking with ScreenRant, Cage said, “No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, okay? It’s not there.”
Cage’s verbal mousetrap is quite telling of the actor’s tolerance for how Disney conducts its business. Cage’s comment may refer to how Disney fumbled the bag with its sequel series National Treasure: Edge of History. The adventure series starring Lisette Olivera, Zuri Reed, Jake Austin Walker, Antonio Cipriano, and Catherine Zeta-Jones was canceled after one season despite having ties to the Cage-led feature films.

You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Through no fault of his own, Michael Keaton’s fun, nostalgic return as Batman had imploded when The Flash would debut to disaster and his follow-up in Batgirl would equally become infamous by getting shelved and locked away. Keaton is bouncing back in a big way with his second directorial effort, Knox Goes Away. Keaton’s directorial debut came in 2008 with the crime thriller, The Merry Gentleman. The trailer for Knox Goes Away has dropped courtesy of Saban Films and features a quote from our own Chris Bumbray, which was also featured on the poster, which says Keaton gives “A career-best performance.”
Knox Goes Away revolves around a contract killer who, after being diagnosed with a fast-moving form of dementia, is presented with the opportunity to redeem himself by saving the life of his estranged adult son. But to do so,...

Michael Keaton is back, releasing the trailer for Knox Goes Away, the story of a principled hit man.
Saban Films has set the U.S. release date for Knox Goes Away, the thriller marking Michael Keaton’s second feature behind the camera, in which he also stars opposite Al Pacino, James Marsden, Marcia Gay Harden, and more. Pic will bow exclusively in theaters nationwide on March 15, having launched out of last year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Scripted by Gregory Poirier (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), Knox Goes Away has Keaton playing John Knox, a hit man attempting to make amends before his recently discovered dementia takes over. Aided by a trusted friend (Pacino) with his own shady past, Knox races against the police — and his own rapidly deteriorating mind — to save his estranged son (Marsden) from a vengeance-fueled mistake and “cash out” before it’s too late.

The sci-fi movies on this list are not all great works of art. They're not all "secretly great," not all misunderstood masterpieces, and they're certainly not all even "good." Some are! Some are merely fun. Some are bad but instructively so, movies whose bad-ness is thought-provoking. Some are even so bad, they circle back around to being incredibly entertaining.
Is "bad-ness" a lack of competence, or one of taste? As C.S. Lewis once wrote, labeling something negatively is an easy way out. "The distinction [between highbrow and lowbrow] is certainly used to allow us the satisfaction of despising certain authors and readers without imposing on us the labour of showing that they are bad," he wrote. He was talking about books, but his point still stands.
I steadfastly believe that it's worthwhile to watch "bad" movies. I believe we can learn a lot from them about our taste, about what works and what doesn't,...

It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.
On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Michael Keaton’s second film as director, Knox Goes Away, is heading to cinemas in 2024. More details here.
He’s been having fun of late in front of the camera, not least his cameo in this year’s The Flash, where he reprised the role of Batman. But Michael Keaton has also taken the opportunity to return to directing.
He first scratched the itch in 2008 with The Merry Gentleman. Now though, he’s wrapped filming on his latest film as director, which goes by the name of Knox Goes Away.
Keaton takes on the role of John Knox in the film, as well as stepping behind the camera. He’s attracted a good cast too, with Al Pacino, James Marsden and Marcia Gay Harden amongst the ensemble. Nicolas Cage broke out in laughter during a recent Vanity Fair video interview when forced to watch the infamous scene from 2004’s “National Treasure” in which his character, treasure hunter and cryptographer Benjamin Gates, says for the first time, “I’m gonna steal the Declaration of Independence.” The line of dialogue has been a calling card for Cage’s career for 19 years now and counting, and it’s inspired countless memes and parodies on the internet.
“How do you take something that is so profoundly ridiculous and really try to sell it?” Cage said while watching the infamous moment. “What I really like about that scene just seeing it again for the first time in however many years is I like the positivity of the character. He really believes this. He really reveres it. I think that’s charming.”
“I can’t even say it without laughing,” he added about the line.

It looks like the "National Treasure" universe wasn't quite ready to expand. Deadline is reporting that the Disney+ spin-off series "National Treasure: Edge of History" has been cancelled after just one season. Guest stars like Harvey Keitel, Justin Bartha, and franchise newbie Catherine Zeta-Jones apparently weren't enough to save the tie-in series, which arrived a full 15 years after the second film in the Nicolas Cage-led franchise.
"National Treasure: Edge of History" followed Jess (Lisette Olivera), a second-generation treasure-keeper and first-generation Mexican-American immigrant who's tasked with continuing her father's legacy. The first season followed a mystery related to a necklace Jess inherited from her father, one that kickstarts an adventure with ties to secret societies, the Spanish Inquisition, the Battle of the Alamo, and much more. The teen-centric show aimed to capture a younger generation of fans, but with the news of its cancellation, one wonders if it came a...

Justin Bartha, who plays Riley Poole in the “National Treasure” series, entered the ongoing TV spin-off “National Treasure: Edge Of History” and has upped the stakes for the third film.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Charlotte,” the fourth episode of “National Treasure: Edge of History,” now streaming on Disney+.
Rest assured, “National Treasure” fans: Justin Bartha knows some of you were hesitant to embrace Disney+’s new spin-off series “Edge of History.” He was too.
After all, it’s been 15 years since its sequel, “National Treasure: Books of Secrets,” hit theaters in 2007, marking the last time audiences spent time with Bartha’s Riley Poole.
The tech-savvy, sarcastic right hand of Nicolas Cage’s treasure-hunting historian Ben Gates remains one of the defining roles of Bartha’s career, alongside “The Hangover.” It’s also the only one he can watch with his daughters, so fans have them to thank for chipping away at his initial skepticism to guest star in the series’ fourth episode.
“To be honest, I didn’t jump aboard right away,” Bartha tells Variety. “But after...

Disney+ is opening up a new chapter in the National Treasure franchise with National Treasure: Edge of History, premiering on December 14, 2022. The series introduces a new group of treasure hunters, with a few familiar faces from the National Treasure films popping in in guest starring roles in season one.
National Treasure: Edge of History was created by Cormac and Marianne Wibberley, writers of both National Treasure films – 2004’s National Treasure and 2007’s National Treasure: Book of Secrets – and follows the hunt for a centuries-old lost Pan-American treasure. The treasure has a special connection to Jess Valenzuela (played Lisette Olivera), a 20-year-old intelligent and resourceful DREAMer who loves solving puzzles and is a whiz at piecing together clues.
Season one finds Jess, with the help of her friends, setting out to learn more about her family’s history while on a quest to locate a lost treasure. Antonio Cipriano and Zuri Reed...

Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha are back to help a new generation of adventurers in "National Treasure: Edge of History." The Disney+ series is set to debut in December, and the first trailer was unveiled at D23 Expo this weekend. While it doesn't look too much like the two movies that came before it, it's still a lot going for it -- like Catherine Zeta-Jones in a severe white-blonde wig talking about "the Daughters of the Plume Serpent."
The series will follow a young treasure hunter, Jess (Lisette Alexis), whom the trailer shows was left some sort of secret key or clue in the form of her late father's necklace. The action kicks off immediately in the promo, which you can check out below:
Could Cage Return?

"National Treasure: Book of Secrets" is likely not anybody's favorite film. It's the sequel to one of the most okay movies I can think of, the 2004 original, which wasn't exactly a genius masterpiece of a movie, but it's fun enough to justify its own existence. The sequel is that, but just slightly worse, which isn't that bad of a degradation as far as sequels go.
The movies feature Nicolas Cage, in one of his least unhinged roles, racing around the country to find various hidden treasures among various American historical landmarks and items. To the film series' credit, one of the more baffling achievements pulled off by these movies was their ability to attract disproportionately talented casts. The first film featured Sean Bean (who shockingly does not die), Harvey Keitel, and Christopher Plummer. The second features such mega-talents as Helen Mirren and Ed Harris. For the first time in a long time, we may have some actual hope that "National Treasure 3" might just be happening. We're still a pretty long way away from the long-awaited sequel actually getting a green light from Disney, but mega producer Jerry Bruckheimer did just offer an encouraging update on the matter, indicating that Nicolas Cage will hopefully have a script in his hands in the not-too-distant future.
Bruckheimer is currently promoting the home video release of "Top Gun: Maverick" and had a chat with the folks at Comicbook.com. During the conversation, the producer gave an update on the sequel that has seemingly been stalled out for years now. As Bruckheimer tells it, the script is currently being worked on, he thinks it's good, and they intend to send it to Cage soon.
"We're working on the script right now. Hopefully [Cage] likes it, but it's really good.

Disney Plus has ordered 10 episodes of a new TV series based on the popular “National Treasure” films.
The show, a reimagining of the franchise, will include original producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley. Directed by Mira Nair, the series will explore identity, community and patriotism through the eyes of Jess Morales, a 20-year-old DREAMer who sets off on an adventure to recover lost treasure and uncover her mysterious family history.
No official announcements have been made in regard to casting the series, but according to Bruckheimer, the show will keep the same concept as the movies while featuring a much younger cast. The Wibberleys serve as executive producers with Jerry Bruckheimer Television, with ABC Signature as the studio. The show will also bring on senior-level writers to join the Wibberleys, who have worked with Bruckheimer on other films like “Bad Boys II” and “G-Force.”

It looks like the movie mythos shaped by the legendary Declaration of Independence heist of Nicolas Cage’s Benjamin Franklin Gates is getting a small screen expansion. That’s because National Treasure, the hit ‘00s film franchise, is the next property culled from the Mouse House’s IP catalogue to get a television series treatment on streamer Disney+.
Jerry Bruckheimer has revealed to Collider that he will return to shepherd a television series connected to the National Treasure franchise, presumably replicating his executive producer position from the hit films. Interestingly enough, we should expect the series to complement said film franchise, since a long-belated threequel, National Treasure 3, was revealed by Bruckheimer this past January to be in development; an idea he affirms to this day.

The long and agonizing wait is over. Disney’s 2004 hit National Treasure is now finally available for streaming on Disney+.
Due to a deal with Netflix, the popular Nicolas Cage film has been absent on Disney’s new streaming service since it launched late last year. Sony Pictures has launched early development of an untitled fourth “Bad Boys” movie with “Bad Boys for Life” screenwriter Chris Bremner returning to write the script.
Bremner has also signed to write “National Treasure 3” for Disney with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. Bruckheimer produced the three “Bad Boys” and the two “National Treasure” movies.
Bremner teamed with Peter Craig and Joe Carnahan on “Bad Boys for Life,” which was easily outperforming expectations on its first day of release Friday with estimates in the $60 million to $70 million range for its North American opening. Sony’s sequel to 1995’s “Bad Boys” and 2003’s “Bad Boys II” reunites Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as old-school cops taking down the leader of a Miami drug cartel, and carries a $90 million production budget.
“Bad Boys for Life,” from directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, has generated a mostly positive critical reception, with a 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

No historical document is safe with Disney out to snag more loot by exploring a potential National Treasure 3.
Mickey Mouse’s seizing of coveted Hollywood properties knows no bounds. No comic book nor Star War nor streaming service is safe. With it all conquered, now the grubby little mouse has his eyes locked on the country’s most valuable relics by reviving the National Treasure film franchise.

Jerry Bruckheimer, who executive produced National Treasure (2003) and the 2007 sequel National Treasure: Book of Secrets, has been talking a third installment into existence for years. It appears he finally found the screenwriter in Chris Bremner, whose most...
