The Clare family buy Clifton House from a mournful old lady. After they move in, however, ghostly apparitions haunt them in the night to the tune of a mysterious old music box which once belonged to the old lady's granddaughter.
The granddaughter comes for an unannounced visit but refuses to take back the music box. Meanwhile, the Clare boys discover a window leading to a secret, walled-up room next to their bedroom.
After breaking into the secret room, Mr Clare finds a skeleton in a four-poster bed. The next day, the Clares entertain their American friends but the party goes awry after the ceiling starts dripping blood.
After all the ghostly occurrences, the Clares decide to leave Clifton House but the boys want to stay so they get in touch with Milton Guest, a professional ghost hunter.
Milton Guest investigates the past of Clifton House eventually uncovering the fate of a Dragoon commander from the 1831 Bristol Riots. He begins an exorcism of the secret room but the Clare daughter doesn't want the ghosts to leave.
The exorcism works, the police come and take away the skeleton and the press become interested in the Clifton House mystery but is everything as clear cut as it seems?
