His Mistake

Ormi Hawley has just been engaged to marry John Halliday, but when a fascinating actress comes to the boarding house, Halliday throws Ormi over. Five years later, the actress is a bad mother, addicted to smoking and wearing enormous hats. When she goes joy-riding with other actors, she is killed and Ormi and John get back together.

The time for such unadorned nickelodeon melodrama had passed, but Lubin's studio was the most conservative of the Patents Trust companies. Still, all the technical issues are well in place. The acting is restrained and the compositions are excellent. Nor were the actors less than first rate. Halliday's career would extend engagingly into the 1930s.

I saw this movie on Youtube and if you go looking for it, be warned: the print is in poor shape and is shown at far too slow a speed. Still, it is a chance to see one of the now very rare efforts from the Lubin studio.
