Update: Though it initially appeared that “The Acolyte” may have had a stronger debut than 2023’s “Ahsoka,” Disney shared that the first episode of its latest Star Wars series reached 11.1 million views in its first five days — almost 3 million short of what “Ahsoka” achieved in the same amount of time. “The Acolyte” still represents Disney+’s biggest series premiere of 2024, however.
Previously: “The Acolyte,” Disney+’s newest Star Wars series, reached 4.8 million views in its first day of availability. This marks the streamer’s biggest series premiere of 2024, according to Disney.
An exact first-day viewership total isn’t available for “Ahsoka,” the most recent Star Wars series, though Disney did report that it took five days to reach 14 million views. That comes out to an average of 2.8 million viewers per day — 2 million below the launch of “The Acolyte,” though it’s likely that most of “Ahsoka’s” was concentrated in...

“She’s probably a little bit reluctant, honestly, to go back to work,” Parminder Nagra admits of her character, Detective Inspector Rachita Ray, when D.I. Ray picks up with a second season on PBS on June 16. The show’s first season ended with Rachita discovering that her fiancé, Dci Martyn Hunter (Jamie Bamber) was dirty; he was arrested and is now in prison. During the course of the investigation, Rachita grew close to and romantically involved with Ps Tony Khatri (Maanuv Thiara), and he was killed. So how is she doing at the beginning of Season 2, which picks up two months later, following her suspension from the force? “She wasn’t left in good shape by the end of first season after the amount of betrayal that she went through, especially with her partner and the fact that we pick up so quickly after the shooting of Tony, [Martyn] going to prison,...

In its lean two-hour runtime, Alan J. Pakula’s 1990 adaptation of “Presumed Innocent” makes a number of incisive points about the American judicial system. First and foremost, it questions whether a courtroom is where truth is ascertained, or merely where various facts are tossed about until a version of the truth satisfies the controlling parties.
Each fallible, failing step in the process of trying a man for murder is given enough of a nudge to amplify the viewer’s unease, be it ingrained biases of supposedly neutral adjudicators, political influences dictating an individual’s freedom, or the sexist assumptions inherent to yet another patriarchal American institution. What’s left, in the end, isn’t just a climactic verdict for the accused — and a juicy reveal outside the courtroom — but the ruins of a man who lived his life for the law, if not also the legal apparatus itself.

Whenever Prime Video cuts promos from its most buck-wild moments, The Boys comes off like the most violent and profane show on streaming. But even Vought's most insidious spinmeisters can't obscure the truth: Eric Kripke's wildly popular superhero send-up maintains a melodramatic flight pattern typical by TV drama standards. Born from the bizarre imaginations of comics maverick Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson, The Boys struggles with its dual aspirations to be respected as "good TV" while enjoying the hype it gets for being so, so bad. ...

Ariana Grande is looking back at her child star roots on Nickelodeon series “Victorious” and spinoff “Sam & Cat” amid the recent allegations captured by docuseries “Quiet on Set.”
Grande, who is leading the upcoming musical adaptation “Wicked,” said during the “Podcrushed” podcast that she believes therapists should be “mandatory” on kid show sets. Grande added that it’s been “devastating” to learn about fellow former child stars’ stories on Nickelodeon; the Grammy winner referred to those actors as “survivors.”
“I think the environment needs to be made safer if kids are going to be acting, and I think there should be therapists,” Grande said. “I think parents should allowed to be wherever they want to be, and I think not only on kids’ sets. “Late Night with Seth Meyers” will no longer feature a live band, which doesn’t bode well for “It’s Time to Ask Fred (Armisen) a Question.”
Meyers’ version of “Late Night” succeeded Jimmy Fallon’s back in 2014. Fallon’s house band The Roots followed him to “The Tonight Show,” so Meyers assembled the 8G Band, led by fellow “SNL” alum Fred Armisen. At first, Armisen was the regular drummer; he later only appeared for a week here and there due to his own busy schedule. The 8G Band’s guitarist Seth Jabour, bassist Syd Butler, and keyboardist Eli Janney were nightly staples. Armisen is still technically the bandleader.
IndieWire has confirmed that come Season 12, debuting in September 2024, the 8G Band will no longer be part of the show. The band is exiting due to budgetary reasons.
Vulture first reported the news in an interview published with “Late Night” associate musical director and keyboardist Janney.

As Walker winds its way toward the series finale, one thing is certain: This show has pulled off some major moves. Not only did it take a musty old series and give it a nice coat of new saddle polish, it also gave The CW some of its best ratings and granted series star Jared Padalecki and showrunner Anna Fricke the chance to assemble a cast that has won the hearts of #WalkerFam fans across the planet. And now, Fricke—in her directorial debut—gets to reconvene some of those actors who have come and gone from the show for an unconventional, deeply emotional, and ultimately pivotal episode that’s like no Walker we’ve ever seen. Oprah Winfrey was absent from her scheduled book club segment on Tuesday’s (June 11) episode of CBS Mornings, with the show’s co-host Gayle King revealing the media mogul had a stomach virus. “She had some kind of stomach thing – stomach flu – stuff was coming out of both ends,” King told the viewers regarding the reason for Winfrey’s absence. “I won’t get too graphic. Needless to say, she ended up in the hospital, dehydration, had to get an IV. It was a very serious thing.” However, King started to worry that she might have upset her best friend by revealing those personal details. “She will be okay. I hope she’s not mad at me for sharing that detail,” the long-time host said. “But I wanted to make it clear, though, that it mattered to her and that it really bothered her that she couldn’t be here for you today.

Despite its title, “How to Rob a Bank” is not an instructional video on how to commit crime. Instead, as its co-director Stephen Robert Morse tells Variety, it’s a documentary about “the consequences of crime.”
The doc, which dropped on Netflix last week, focuses on a prolific ‘90s Seattle bank robber called Scott Scurlock, whom the FBI soon nicknamed Hollywood due to his penchant for elaborate disguises.
Morse (a producer on “Amanda Knox”) and his co-director Seth Porges (“Class Action Park”) began working on the film back in 2020 and quickly tracked down many of those involved in the notorious case.

Watching the dutiful and occasionally gripping remake of Presumed Innocent, Scott Turow’s 1987 bestseller that became a hit movie for Harrison Ford back in the day, I kept wondering about the statute of fictional limitations. Maybe 30-odd years is enough time to allow for a new take on such a well-known warhorse. Or maybe not. Even if well done, it’s been done. And while the 1990 movie clocks in at just over two hours, David E. Kelley‘s indulgent and often very loose adaptation plods over eight episodes. This gives more time to depict the emotional fallout on the family of hotshot Chicago prosecutor Rusty Sabich after he’s accused of the brutal murder of his co-worker mistress. Kelley has been a master of the TV courtroom drama since his L.A. Law heyday back around the time of Presumed Innocent‘s blockbuster publication. ...

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was the latest celebrity to take part in Seth Meyers‘ semi-regular Late Night segment “Day Drinking,” and it only took her one sip of a dirty martini to realize, “This show is a terrible idea.” The multi-time Emmy-winning actress appeared on the show to promote her new movie Tuesday, but by the end of the segment, she was spilling her guts, revealing her favorite Weekend Update host and whether she would call Jerry Seinfeld or Larry David if she ended up in prison. Things kicked off with a Veep-themed round of drinks inspired by Louis-Dreyfus’ time as Vice President Selina Meyer on the hit HBO comedy series. This included a Norman Rockefeller (ruby port and Goldschläger), a Harry Truman (two Jägerbombs dropped into beer), and a Dick Cheney, which was just a shot. “Because he shot somebody in the face?” Louis-Dreyfus said. “He did,” Meyers replied. “And then we look back on it.

However, she is also “reprocessing” her time on the show in light of the recent Investigation Discovery documentary series Quiet on Set. “I was 14 and I flew out to audition with Liz Gillies for Victorious, and we were all very excited and we got cast and it was the best news we could hear,” Grande said (per Variety). “We were young performers who just wanted to do this with our lives more than anything, and we got to and that was so beautiful. The Indian Premier League cricket universe has emerged as one of Asia’s most valuable sports properties. U.S. investment bank Houlihan Lokey says that the business enterprise and brand values of the Ipl combined now total $16.4 billion.
Launched in 2007, the tournament involves franchises based in key Indian cities, many of which are backed by Bollywood celebrities and big business bosses. Deploying the made-for-television, 20-overs per innings format, it has proved immensely popular with audiences and caused industry-shifting rivalry between media groups.
The stand-alone brand value of the Ipl has increased by 6.3% to $3.4 billion, over the past year, Houlihan Lokey reckons.

The cutthroat elimination the challengers had been fearing for weeks finally happened on Wednesday’s newest episode of The Challenge: All Stars Season 4. While the six star holders — Ace Amerson, Cara Maria Sorbello, Leroy Garrett, Nicole Zanatta, Steve Meinke, and Veronica Portillo — got to literally sit back and relax in an Rv with booze and games, the rest had to compete in a mini-final for T.J. Lavin‘s last two available stars or else be eliminated. In the first heat of the day’s challenge, “Star Born,” the six remaining contestants vying for one of those two stars were Adam Larson, Averey Tressler, Derek Chavez, Laurel Stucky, and Ryan Kehoe. Only one male and one female could win this heat, which saw the contestants racing through the forest to a giant tree with a raft hanging on it, untying that, then paddling to a star in the middle of ...

Mae and Osha may be twins, but they want very different things out of life. That disconnect was prevalent in Star Wars: The Acolyte’s flashback episode on Tuesday, set 16 years in the past on their home planet of Brendok.
The Force-sensitive girls were to participate in the Ascension, a special ceremony during which they’d become witches and join their family’s coven. While Mae was honored to perform the task, Osha had her reservations. She wasn’t sure that that was what she wanted.

NBC isn’t cutting “Late Night” off the network’s regular schedule, but it is going to cut the show’s budget.
The 8G Band, a signature element of the Seth Meyers-led program since it launched in 2014, will stop appearing on the after-hours NBC show, commencing in the fall. Eli Janney, the combo’s keyboardist, told Vulture Tuesday that the trio was informed in recent weeks that the band would cease to be a regular part of the program due to budget cuts.
“In the end, NBC was adamant about where they wanted the budget to go,” Janney told the entertainment-news site.

There’s no denying that Jeopardy!‘s Adriana Harmeyer has been on an impressive winning streak, but will it continue? After the June 11 game, the signs are promising as she rang in her 10th consecutive win, being among a small group to ever achieve that status through regular gameplay. In the match, the Indiana-based archivist went up against math teacher Scott McCann from Germantown, Tennessee, and audiovisual archivist Sarah Harzell from Howell, New Jersey. Already a nine-day champion at the start of the game with a total of $204,700 in winnings, Adriana was certainly the competitor to beat heading into the match. Scott was Adriana’s biggest competition as he went into the Double Jeopardy round with $5,000, a noticeable lead against Adriana’s $3,400. While she managed to pull back the lead during Double Jeopardy, Adriana did lose $3,000 during the third Daily Double clue in the category “Authors Before Authoring,” which presented her with the statement,...
