Nicholas was 13 years old when he went missing in San Antonio, Texas, in June of 1994. The exact date of his disappearance is a matter of debate. He had a volatile home life; his mother and older brother were drug addicts, domestic fights were common and Nicholas himself had a juvenile record. He was diagnosed with ADD prior to his going missing, and his teachers had contacted CPS on his behalf having suspected child abuse. Although some agencies list him as a runaway, foul play is suspected in his disappearance. His older brother Jason, who was a cocaine addict with a violent temper was considered a suspect when the case was re-opened as a homicide investigation, but Jason died of an overdose before he could be investigated further.
