Diane Lane Leads Jan Komasa’s Anniversary As Trailer Sets October Release
Jan Komasa
Lionsgate has released the first trailer for Anniversary, a contemporary thriller from director Jan Komasa that will open in theaters on October 29. The film stars Diane Lane and Kyle Chandler as a long-married couple whose celebration is upended when their son, played by Dylan O’Brien, introduces a new girlfriend, portrayed by Phoebe Dynevor. The trailer arrived August 19 across studio channels, and early materials position the movie as a tense domestic drama set against national unrest.

The footage shows Lane’s character recognizing her son’s partner as a former student and bristling at the young woman’s ties to a rising movement called “The Change,” a detail that threads through scenes of neighborhood unease and family infighting. People premiered the video and featured comments from Lane calling the story timely; the cut uses a cover of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” to underscore the family’s fracture. The ensemble also includes Zoey Deutch,...

In a different scene, O’Brien confronts Lane over her feelings about Dynevor. “Can you pretend to be happy for me?” O’Brien asks. “You couldn’t bend her your way. It drives you insane.”

Dynevor, O'Brien, Lane, Chandler, Deutch in 'Anniversary' Movie Trailer
Image
"It's growing a new host to attach itself to... that's how it blossoms & affects the entire ecosystem." Uh oh. Roadside Attractions / Lionsgate have unveiled the official trailer for an intriguing contemporary political thriller titled Anniversary, from filmmaker Jan Komasa. He is a Polish director best known for his award-winning film Corpus Christi from 2019 criticizing religion in Poland. He's back with this brand new thriller about American turning into extra fascist & crazy - through a program called "The Change." A provocative thriller about a very close-knit family that is torn apart as a movement known as "The Change" envelops the country. The excellent ensemble cast includes Diane Lane, Kyle Chandler, Madeline Brewer, Zoey Deutch, Phoebe Dynevor, Mckenna Grace, Daryl McCormack, plus Dylan O'Brien. Intriguing to note that these members of "The Change" wear nametags like Mormons do, as well as how the American flag in this is depicted with the blue stars in the middle.

I Live Here Now Review: 35mm Psychological Thriller Envelops You in A Fractured Reality of Pain and Perception [Fantasia 2025]
Image
Writer/director Julie Pacino makes her feature film debut with the lush & surreal psychological thriller I Live Here Now. Shot on a mix of 35mm and 16mm film, this journey through the mind of an aspiring actress is a nightmare odyssey of scarred memories, bad boyfriends, and the cruel standards of the film industry. From a story perspective it’s maybe not the most groundbreaking examination of trauma but it is an undeniable visual feast from start to finish, with a stunning colour palette and a cast of kooky characters.

I Live Here Now stars Lucy Fry (Bright) as Rose, an actress that’s being pushed to the brink of starvation just for a chance to be considered worthwhile to a casting director. With an incredibly important opportunity just days away, she should be focusing on her audition tape but Rose is forced to leave town in search of an...

I Live Here Now Review: Checking Into a Neon Nightmare
Image
An actress, Rose, stands at a precipice. It is a classic setup. A career-defining role hangs in the balance, contingent on the absurd demand that she shed pounds she does not possess. Simultaneously, her body stages a quiet, biological coup: a pregnancy she was assured by medicine and trauma was an impossibility.

The world conspires to close in. Her boyfriend, Travis, a man of breathtaking unseriousness, and his mother, Martha—a chilling Sheryl Lee, whose ownership of her son’s progeny is nothing short of feudal—present a united front of external control.

They have plans for her, for the child. Rose has other ideas. Her flight from their suffocating benevolence is not toward freedom, but toward a clinical solution in a remote town. She checks into The Crown Inn in Idyllwild, seeking a sterile anonymity. She finds something else entirely. The place is not a refuge; it is a crucible.

I Live Here Now (2025) Movie Review: A Tribute to Lynchian Surrealism
Image
Premiering at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival, “I Live Here Now” is a hellish, fever-dream-like trip. In her feature debut, writer-director Julie Pacino has chosen to explore the labyrinths of human psychology and memories. Comparisons with David Lynch’s works, specifically “Inland Empire,” are inevitable. Admittedly, “I Live Here Now” pulls its punches and remains a little more rooted to ‘reality’ than what “Inland Empire” did. Whether that is for the good or the bad, it depends entirely on whether you find Lynch frustratingly impenetrable or bizarrely brilliant. I tend to veer towards the latter while appreciating the frustration mentioned in the former. So, as someone who does not mind an occasional nightmare, “I Live Here Now” just about works for me.

Like “Inland Empire,” “I Live Here Now” centers around an actress and her bid to play a role. Rose (Lucy Fry) is an aspiring actress who...

Fantasia Review: Julie Pacino’s I Live Here Now is a Psychodrama That Embraces Unsettling Humor
Image
Rose (Lucy Fry) has always known she cannot have children. The tragic result of a childhood surgery whose trauma embedded itself in her mind as a nightmare, this truth became a major part of her identity. A crucial piece to the puzzle that was her so-called brokenness. This is why she can’t wrap her head around the news when the doctor tells her she’s pregnant. It’s not just the irony that this discovery comes as a result of being ordered to lose three pounds for a potential acting role, but the horrible timing of finally catching a big career break when the opportunity to start a family miraculously manifests. Rose must escape the chaos. She must figure out what she wants. Who she is. Who she can still become.

The debut feature from Julie Pacino, I Live Here Now embraces an unsettling humor from the beginning. There’s the noted,...

Julie Pacino on Exploring Female Trauma in Lynchian Feature Directorial Debut ‘I Live Here Now’
Image
Lucy Fry’s Rose, a woman haunted by trauma, ends up checking herself into an inn where reality seems to unravel, blurring the lines between past and present, and waking life and dreams. That’s the set-up for I Live Here Now, writer-director Julie Pacino’s feature directorial debut, which world premieres on Thursday at the Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal before screening at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland in the out-of-competition lineup and then traveling to the Edinburgh International Film Festival for its Midnight Madness program.

“The film pulses with competing anxieties: the pursuit of perfection, the weight of generational trauma, and the invisible fist of capitalism tightening its grip around the necks of its characters,” the Fantasia synopsis reads. “Pacino plunges us into a vibrant and nightmarish psychodrama that reverberates with echoes of David Lynch, Dario Argento and the Coen brothers.”

The Steamiest Netflix Original Horror Movie Ever Is a Powerful Profile of Remote Sex Work
Image
Sex work is a profession that has long been maligned by the masses. For years, our society has stigmatized and attacked sex workers based on a lack of understanding and perhaps an absence of empathy. If you value the idea of enriching your perspective, you may want to check out the Netflix original horror film Cam. This 2018 feature offers a sympathetic portrayal of sex work while simultaneously speaking to the perils of the industry and the ways in which models find themselves at elevated risk by virtue of simply reporting to work. Not to mention, the picture also touches on themes of identity, the pitfalls of Internet culture, and objectification.

Isa Mazzei who penned the script for Cam is a former webcam model. By virtue of that past experience, she has a unique perspective on the subject matter and plenty to say. Mazzei previously told Vice that she initially wanted...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Samira Wiley Is Done With Trauma
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale series finale, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale.”]

In the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, no character ended up where they started. That rings true for Moira, the Gilead survivor who has been played by Samira Wiley since the Hulu series began.

Moira emerges from the dystopian saga with a new lease on life. After six seasons spent helping others and mainly fighting June’s (Elisabeth Moss) battle to get daughter Hannah back, Moira ends the series somewhat open-ended but with a vow to begin living life more for herself. “Her story has been in tandem with June’s story, and now I see her focusing on individuating and trying to figure out what her story is,” Wiley tells The Hollywood Reporter as she imagines Moira’s next steps after the series faded to black with its May 26 series finale.

Though Gilead is falling and the fictional...

Alexis Bledel withdraws from Emmy consideration for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ due to rule change
Image
The new Emmy rule for guest eligibility has claimed its first victim.

Alexis Bledel, who returned to The Handmaid's Tale for last week's series finale, only had a few minutes of screen time, so she understandably submitted in the Best Drama Guest Actress category for the upcoming Emmys. However, a 2025 addendum to the Emmys rulebook stipulates that if a performer was previously nominated in supporting or lead, they cannot switch to guest for that same show at any future date, regardless of how much screen time they have — or, in Bledel's case, don't have.

As originally reported by Variety and confirmed by Gold Derby, the Television Academy notified Bledel that she would be moved from Best Drama Guest Actress to Best Drama Supporting Actress, the same category where she was nominated in 2018 (losing to Thandiwe Newton for Westworld). As a result, Bledel opted to withdraw her name from consideration completely,...

What ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ star Elisabeth Moss ‘stressed about’ for a year and a half while filming the final season
Image
Warning: This story contains spoilers from Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Fresh off the series finale, The Handmaid’s Tale cast and creatives gathered Wednesday at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles to reflect on the Emmy-winning show’s full-circle moments — and to reveal a surprise guest.

Calling the final scenes of the six-season series “a very meta experience to film,” star, director, and executive producer Elisabeth Moss described the moment her character, June Osborne, walks through the ruins of the Waterfords’ home and reflects on her past as a handmaid, known as Offred, in the Boston household.

“It was a really beautiful experience, because we had a closed set just to keep it really nice and calm,” said Moss, who directed four episodes this season, including the finale, during the FYC event. “Every single member of this crew took it upon themselves that this was going to be...

Madeline Brewer's Bridesmaids at Upcoming Wedding Will Include Two Co-Stars from 'Handmaid's Tale'
Image
Madeline Brewer is opening up about her upcoming wedding to cinematographer Jack Thompson-Roylance and how the cast of The Handmaid’s Tale will be involved.

The 33-year-old actress got engaged back in January 2024 and she’s planning a July 2025 wedding in England.

Madeline revealed that she initially wasn’t going to invite many people from her Handmaid’s Tale family, but she recently changed her mind.

“I just was doing some rounds of invites to my wedding the other day and I was like, ‘I need to invite more of my friends from The Handmaid’s Tale,’” she told People. “Just for the fact that I didn’t initially because they all live in LA, or it’s a big ask to ask them all to come here. But I was like, ‘These are my people. These are some of my closest friends.’”

Madeline also revealed the two co-stars who will be bridesmaids in the wedding!

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Madeline Brewer on Janine’s Final Scene: “I Was Inconsolable”
Image
[This story contains major spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale series finale, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale.”]

Now that The Handmaid’s Tale has finished telling its tale, Madeline Brewer can react to Janine’s ending.

The final episode had the tricky task of ending June’s (Elisabeth Moss) story while also setting up Hulu’s Gilead TV universe with the forthcoming sequel series, The Testaments. Margaret Atwood’s follow-up story to her 1985 Handmaid’s Tale novel focuses on June’s daughter, Hannah, who has been renamed Agnes in Gilead. The Testaments sequel novel, which published in 2019, influenced how series creator Bruce Miller and co-showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang could end the series: The show couldn’t end with June getting Hannah back, because Hannah is still in Gilead in The Testaments. But the writers did deliver another blessed mother-daughter reunion.

In the series finale “The Handmaid’s Tale,” written by Miller and directed by Moss, Aunt Lydia...

How ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ series finale sets up ‘The Testaments’
Image
With the Emmy-winning adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid’s Tale wrapping up the six-season arc of the revolutionary June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), fans can finally celebrate Boston’s liberation from the authoritarian clutches of Gilead. It’s been a harrowing journey for June since the show’s 2017 premiere, and she can't entirely celebrate with her daughter Hannah still behind Gilead’s borders. With Hulu hard at work on The Testaments, an adaptation of Atwood’s 2019 sequel novel set years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, audiences will get a greater degree of resolution over the future of Hannah and the rest of the women under Gilead’s thumb. Here's how The Handmaid’s Tale’s Season 6 resolution sets up for that highly anticipated follow-up.

How did The Handmaid's Tale end?

At the conclusion of The Handmaid’s Tale, the resistance group Mayday (in collaboration with the U.S. military) successfully...

Alexis Bledel shares 'grateful' comments about The Handmaid's Tale following series exit
Image
There were always certain characters from The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood that we knew would need to come to life on the screen. They were characters mentioned throughout Offred’s story in the novel, but they never got a voice of their own. Alexis Bledel took on the role of one of them, taking on the role of Ofglen, who we would learn was actually called Emily.

From the beginning of the series, Emily’s story was harrowing. She was made a Handmaid after trying to flee America for Canada, where her wife and son were citizens of. Since she held an American passport, she was stopped at the border, and so started her harrowing ordeal that would lead to mutilation, a time in the toxic colonies, and much more.

The Handmaid’S Tale - “The Handmaid’s Tale” - June reflects on her experiences in Gilead and decides what to do next.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Emmy Plans: Elisabeth Moss’ Surprise Directing Episode Choice, Alexis Bledel Goes for Guest Actress Despite New Rules (Exclusive)
Image
Blessed be the Emmys rulebook, but it needs some serious updating.

With “The Handmaid’s Tale” having taken its final bow, Hulu has confirmed its official Emmy submissions for the critically acclaimed drama, with one entry in particular already causing waves.

Variety has learned exclusively that the streamer has submitted Alexis Bledel in the guest drama actress category for her appearance in the series finale (“610 – The Handmaid’s Tale”), despite a newly enforced Emmy rule disqualifying actors who have been previously nominated in a lead or supporting category for the same show. Bledel won the Emmy for guest in 2017, and garnered two additional noms in the same category in 2020 and 2021. However, in 2018, after appearing in seven of the 13 episodes for a season, she was ineligible to compete as a guest; she was submitted and eventually nominated for supporting drama actress. The one-year recognition for her character, Ofglen, appears to fall outside the bounds of eligibility,...

The Handmaid's Tale delivered 3 cameos (and 2 of them you may have overlooked)
Image
There were many callbacks to earlier episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale in the series finale. While the locations are somewhat easy to get, it’s not always that easy to get former cast members. Well, the series did it, and was able to keep these cameos a complete surprise — even from those of us who saw some of the filming!

Caution: This post contains Spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale series finale.

The final episode quickly picked up with the fall of Gilead in Boston. The Guardians had to pull back, meaning that the state of Massachssets was free from Gilead control and back under American law. This allowed one character who hasn’t been seen since the end of the fourth season make a return.

There were two characters last seen earlier in The Handmaid’s Tale season 4 that were more of a surprise in the series finale. After all, these two cameos,...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Finale Is More of a Bridge to ‘The Testaments’
Image
[Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Handmaid’s Tale” finale — Season 6, Episode 10, “The Handmaid’s Tale.”]

If the “Handmaid’s Tale” series finale is going to include a series-defining monologue, then Cherry Jones may as well be the one to deliver it. Having just heard her daughter, June (Elisabeth Moss), is planning to go back out into the field and continue fighting Gilead, Holly (Jones) is upset. She’s been worrying about June for years now, suffering through long stretches when she doesn’t know where she is, who she’s with, or if she’s even still alive. More recently, the opposite anxiety besets Holly. She has to watch as June is captured and strung up to be hanged, all while caring for June’s youngest daughter (also named Holly).

It ends happily enough — June once again survives, and her rescue even sets off a string of events that frees Boston from Gilead’s grip...

The Handmaid's Tale series finale recap and ending, explained
Image
After six wonderful seasons, The Handmaid's Tale comes full circle. The question was always whether Gilead would start to fall before The Testaments began.

Caution: This post contains Spoilers for The Handmaid's Tale series finale.

There was a lot riding on The Handmaid’s Tale season 6, episode 10. It needed to bring closure to June’s story, but it also couldn’t completely shut down the Gilead regime considering what we know of The Testaments. The writers had a lot to deliver, and arguably, it worked.

The episode opened off the back of the explosive penultimate episode. With the High Commanders gone, Boston fell to May Day. We didn’t get to see the fighting in the street, but we did learn that it took nine days for it to happen. Somewhere along the line, Janine was taken by Gilead, with June and Mark working tirelessly to find her.

It wasn’t just Boston that fell,...

Elisabeth Moss in The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Blessed be the fight until the very end. The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian drama adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel of the same name, centers on Elisabeth Moss’ June, a woman living in a dark age who sees her family and former life stripped away. She strikes back and becomes a fierce leader of a rebellion, but her quest for justice endangers herself and those around her. Here, Carradine speaks to Deadline about her views on Naomi and her experience on the show.

Deadline: What do you remember about those initial descriptions of Naomi in the beginning? And what do you think about her trajectory to now?

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Ends With a Hollow Victory. Can the Spinoff Do Better? | Commentary
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6, Episode 10.

The sun has set on Gilead. For now.

After six seasons, Hulu’s critically acclaimed series “The Handmaid’s Tale” has reached its endpoint, which is really more of a pause until the story picks up again in spinoff series “The Testaments.” And that’s what it felt like as June Osborne narrated the eponymous final episode, summing up the surviving characters’ next steps.

Not an end. Just a breather.

Obviously, with a spinoff in the works, it was never an option to end “The Handmaid’s Tale” with the fall of Gilead. The finale was always going to be open-ended, allowing for Gilead to come back bigger and badder than ever in “The Testaments.” And while it’s a foregone conclusion that the spinoff will build on the original,...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Series Finale Brings Reunions, Resolutions & Sets Up ‘The Testaments’ Spinoff
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from the series finale of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale.

Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale concluded its run tonight after 8 years and 6 seasons, following June Osbourne (Elisabeth Moss) in her fight to rid the world of evil.

While there were wins for the rebellion, Gilead lives on with many of June’s strongest allies trapped there at the start of the episode, like Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and Janine (Madeline Brewer). Her beloved daughter Hannah isn’t free, but she learns she will be closer to her.

In an early scene in the episode, June reconnects with Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) and her baby boy, Noah. These women have come a long way from the mortal enemies they were throughout most of the early seasons. June was Serena’s former handmaid, and there’s no way they could ever be friends, but by the end,...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Speaks About Their Series Finale Return
Image
[This story contains specific spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale series finale, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale.”]

While looking into a window marked with the words, “Freedom,” June (Elisabeth Moss) and viewers of The Handmaid’s Tale heard a familiar voice.

“Blessed be the fruit.”

The voice belonged to Alexis Bledel, who returned as Emily in the series finale of the Hulu series, which began streaming Tuesday.

Her arrival was as much of a surprise to June (Elisabeth Moss) as it is to the audience who hasn’t seen the Og handmaid since Bledel left the series after season four. Bledel, an original star who earned four nominations for her role on the Hulu dystopian series, departed without a specific explanation.

While the fifth season was in production, Bledel had said, “After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time. I am forever grateful to [showrunner] Bruce Miller for writing such...

And just like that, Bruce Miller’s TV adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s 1985 novel has officially taken its final bow. In six seasons and 65 episodes, viewers watched June Osborne go from a frantic but courageous handmaid into the leader of a rebellion against the patriarchal, totalitarian society of Gilead.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” showrunners Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang unpacked the finale’s biggest moments with TheWrap, including those heartwarming surprise returns, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) and Luke Osborne’s (O-t Fagbenle) tender farewell, Serena Wharton’s (Yvonne Strahovski) apology and much more.

In Episode 10, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale,” June’s years-long worth of efforts took down Gilead’s reign over Boston, returning the city to U.S. territory. As the last bits of Gilead’s hold on her home burn up in flames, memories of Nick Blaine fall onto her like ashes.

Inside ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Series Finale: Elisabeth Moss and Creator Bruce Miller Explain That Ending
Image
[This story contains Major spoilers from The Handmaid’s Tale series finale, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale.”]

The Handmaid’s Tale‘s creator Bruce Miller always knew how he was going to end the series. A key location detail changed along the way and he didn’t know how many seasons it would take to get there, or that Margaret Atwood would write a sequel novel in 2019. But he knew that when the show reached its ending, June’s story would circle back to where it began, but with new perspective.

“This is definitely not a story where you get what you want most of the time — or where June gets what she wants. It’s a story about how to live with the things you can’t get,” Miller explains to The Hollywood Reporter about the series finale.

The 2017 pilot of the Emmy-winning Hulu series had introduced viewers to Elisabeth Moss as June, the woman readers first...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s Ending Has Been Planned Since Day One — How It Convinced Elisabeth Moss to Star
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale series finale.] The Handmaid’s Tale has ended after six seasons on Hulu. The fictional authoritarian regime of Gilead did not fall in the series finale, but it suffered its biggest military loss to date when Mayday and the U.S. military liberated Boston in the penultimate episode. The series finale, which came out at midnight E.T., 9 p.m. Pt on May 27 on the streamer, picked up 19 days later when Massachusetts had been completely freed and restored as an American state. Also freed was the missing Janine (Madeline Brewer), who had been trapped in Gilead since Mayday’s attack in Episode 9. Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) and the now-widowed Naomi Lawrence (Ever Carradine) brought Janine to the Gilead-Boston border and brought Charlotte along with them. Janine and her daughter were at last reunited and safe in the U.S., making June (Elisabeth Moss) yearn for her long-lost...

“Absolutely Lost Her Way”: ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Producer Reveals Details About Aunt Lydia Ahead of Sequel Series ‘The Testaments’
Image
With just two weeks until The Handmaid's Tale delivers its series finale, the show is already putting the pieces in place for the upcoming sequel seriesThe Testaments. We don't know much about what to expect from the new show, but we do know that at least one character will cross over from one series to the other. Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) started the show as a hateful and abusive character, but now she is starting to realize that she is only a cog in a much, much bigger engine. During a panel with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, series executive producer Warren Littlefield (The Old Man) talked about Aunt Lydia and where her head is at this point in the series.

Over the course of the series' six seasons, Aunt Lydia has seen many atrocities committed at Gilead, and she herself was at the front of several of them. But a couple of weeks ago,...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Kills off Major Characters in Explosive Penultimate Episode — Fans React
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 Episode 9, “Execution.”] The Handmaid’s Tale made its boldest move ever in the penultimate episode of the series, one that spells victory for the rebels in Gilead but comes at a high cost. The big swing seems to have paid off. Fans of the Hulu dystopian drama are praising the episode’s ending that featured the deaths of two of the show’s biggest characters. Earlier in the episode, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss) nearly died as well in what was meant to be a public execution of most of the Boston handmaids, including Moira (Samira Wiley) and Janine (Madeline Brewer), as well as Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), who let the handmaids carry out their plot to kill the commanders in Episode 8. The fallout of this thwarted plot to quell the rebellion will be depicted in next week’s series finale. The episode opened in the...

It's the end of Gilead as we knew it, and it feels Great.

The penultimate episode of The Handmaid's Tale sees the revolution take place in full force, even if it doesn't go completely according to plan.

June (Elisabeth Moss), Janine (Madeline Brewer), Moira (Samira Wiley), and Aunt Phoebe (D'Arcy Carden) — who is really a CIA agent named Ava working with Mark (Sam Jaeger) — start the episode excited for their next steps, but are stopped by Wharton's (Josh Charles) guards. He knows June is behind the 37 Commanders killed after his wedding, and he wants her separated from the others and sent to a prison cell. ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Team Goes Inside That Tragic One-Two Punch of Penultimate Episode
Image
[This story contains Major spoilers from season six, episode nine of The Handmaid’s Tale, “Execution.”]

There’s no such thing as a good Commander.

The Handmaid’s Tale‘s writers have been passing along that message to viewers throughout the sixth and final season of the Hulu series. When Nick (Max Minghella) shocked his lover June (Elisabeth Moss) with the Jezebel’s betrayal, her husband Luke (O-t Fagbenle) argued it’s because he’s a Nazi. When Wharton (Josh Charles) surprised his new wife with a handmaid on their wedding night, Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski) remembered June’s warning: Wharton can’t be a good man, because he’s a man of Gilead.

Yet killing three High Commanders is still a shocking final-season surprise: In the penultimate episode, titled “Execution” (written by co-showrunner Eric Tuchman and directed by star Elisabeth Moss), Nick Blaine, Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Gabriel Wharton all perished. Lawrence was planning to plant an altitude-triggered bomb on...

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Creator Explains the ‘Delicious’ Reason Behind Commander Bell’s Killer Twist
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6, Episode 8.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” creator Bruce Miller said there was a world in which the God-awful Commander Bell (Timothy Simons) could’ve had a different climatic death that included Janine or any of the other character taking out their anger on the Gilead official.

“It was so delicious, ” Miller told TheWrap of Bell’s death, as he responded to if the writing team ever considered having Janine (Madeline Brewer) end her abuser’s life instead of June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss).

“It was kind of this — you know what it’s like when you have something you really want to do that makes sense, and you really want to do it, and then you’re like, ‘Everybody wants [to]’. You want it to be ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ where 25 people get a chance to stab them, because it makes sense,” Miller...

Yvonne Strahovski Unpacks Her Gilead Wedding Night Surprise in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season six, episode eight of The Handmaid’s Tale, “Exodus.”]

When Yvonne Strahovski was preparing to walk down the aisle as Serena Joy for The Handmaid’s Tale‘s final season, she was nervous.

“That’s not how I usually get when on set,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I had to walk down an aisle with everyone staring at me, and I felt like I was going to fall over doing that slow aisle walk. I was genuinely, extremely nervous.”

Nerves seem appropriate given the grand opulence of the Gilead wedding that was created for the former Mrs. Waterford’s second marriage to High Commander Wharton, played by season six newcomer Josh Charles. The ceremony was set in a church for the eighth episode, titled “Exodus” (which released earlier this week), and the elite affair that followed featured more moving parts than perhaps any prior episode in the Emmy-winning Hulu series. Everyone was invited, from...

Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 8!The Handmaid's Tale stars Ann Dowd and Elisabeth Moss, along with co-showrunner Yahlin Chang, break down Aunt Lydia's big moment in season 6, episode 8. The Handmaid's Tale season 6, episode 8 saw June (Moss) deliver the biggest blow to Gilead yet, leading an army of Handmaids in drugging and killing Commanders after Serena's (Yvonne Strahovski) wedding. However, after June lists off a litany of crimes she's committed, and some convincing from Janine (Madeline Brewer), she lets them all escape.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Ann Dowd Shares the Real Reason Aunt Lydia Let the Handmaids Go in Episode 8
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Handmaid’s Tale” Season 6, Episode 8.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” star Ann Dowd said her character Aunt Lydia’s critical decision to let the rebelling group of handmaids go was mostly in part due to how much she loves and cares about Janine (Madeline Brewer).

“Without Janine coming in [into the room], I don’t think Aunt Lydia could have let go,” Dowd told TheWrap. “That’s the power of this relationship, the love that I know Lydia has for her, and I won’t speak for Janine, but there’s real love there.”

It’s true, Aunt Lydia has always had a sweet spot for Janine in her cold, prickly heart. As the saying goes, if you love something, let it go. And in Episode 8, titled “Exodus,” fans finally get to see Aunt Lydia prove how much she loves Janine. After giving the escaping handmaids a good holier than thou scolding,...

Ann Dowd, Elisabeth Moss, Samira Wiley and Madeline Brewer Relive Their ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Full-Circle Face Off
Image
[This story contains spoilers from season six, episode eight of The Handmaid’s Tale, “Exodus.”]

The Handmaid’s Tale resistance finally arrived and it took everyone by surprise, but none more than Aunt Lydia.

The eighth episode of the sixth and final season of the Hulu series circled all the way back to the very beginning. After setting up the biggest coup ever planned by June (Elisabeth Moss) and her fellow handmaids at the end of last episode, this week’s hour, titled “Exodus,” opened with a callback where June in voiceover explains the logic behind the creation of Gilead’s class system and why the totalitarian regime cloaked its handmaids in red.

“They assigned us colors. They dictated what we wore. Who we could be. They used our clothes to divide us, to dehumanize us,” she explains. “They put us in red, the color of blood, to mark us.”

But, she says, “They forgot that it’s also the color of rage.
