A lot of criticism has existed against The Blind Side, a film that elevates Sandra Bullock to an Oscar-winning actress while perpetuating harmful connotations of white savior trope through the veil of a morally uplifting story. After seeing several dozen reports and complaints, most of which originated after the subject of the film began to speak out against it, it begs the question:

While there is no refuting the events that truly occurred and later inspired the sports biopic, the harmful stereotype that The Blind Side promotes takes away from Sandra Bullock’s award-winning performance, leaving a bitter aftertaste in its place instead.

Former football star Michael Oher tried to extort $15 million from Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, the couple said in a new court filing.

The Tuohys raised Oher and his story was the basis for the film The Blind Side, which generated $330 million at the box office in 2009 and has continued to earn revenue over the years.

Oher claims the Tuohys received millions for the film while he hadn’t received a single payment initially.

He filed a lawsuit on August 14 against the Tuohys because instead of adopting him, as they said they would, they established a conservatorship and kept millions of dollars from him.

The Tuohy and Alcon Entertainment, the film’s producer, disputed the claim and said that the only way for Oher to attend the University of Mississippi and play football was through the conservatorship.

On the court papers, the Tuohys claimed that the “conservatorship was the tool chosen to accomplish this goal.

Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes on Friday ended the agreement reached in 2004 when Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy allegedly tricked Oher into signing documents that appointed them as his conservators rather than his adoptive parents. Under the conservatorship, Oher claimed, he has been deprived of the rights to his name, image and likeness on top of millions of dollars the family got for signing away the rights to the book the film is based on.

This includes a deal with 20th Century Studios giving the Tuohys and their two children $225,000 and 2.5 percent of all future net proceeds from the movie, which has grossed over $300 million, according to a court petition.

A Tennessee judge said Friday she is ending a conservatorship agreement between former NFL player Michael Oher and a Memphis couple who took him in when he was in high school, but the highly-publicized dispute over financial issues will continue.

Shelby County Probate Court Judge Kathleen Gomes said she is terminating the agreement reached in 2004 that allowed Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy to control Oher’s finances. Oher signed the agreement when he was 18 and living with the couple as he was being recruited by colleges as a star high school football player. Shelby County Probate Court issued three subpoenas Tuesday asking for information from Memphis Shelby County Schools, Alcon Entertainment, which produced the movie, and Creative Artists Agency, a prominent talent agent firm known as CAA.

Michael Oher‘s high school football coach is weighing in on the lawsuit between Oher and the Tuohy family.

The 37-year-old former NFL pro filed a lawsuit on Monday that alleges that Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy tricked him into a conservatorship and lied about his adoption status when he was 18.

Auburn coach Hugh Freeze, who coached Oher at Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, called the legal drama “sad.”
