Born in Salamanca in 1980, Juan Barrero studied film at Seville University and in at the University of Sussex. In 2003, he directed his first short '1939', adapted from Francisco Ayala's 'Diálogo de los muertos', about circus artists in the immediate post-civil war period. He then took part, along with five other directors, in the documentary 'Entre el dictador y yo' (2005), analyzing the state of mind of the 'children of democracy' thirty years after the death of Franco. His first feature film, 'La jungla interior' (2013), is a poetic, half-fictionalized rendering of his own sentimental life. It was awarded the New Waves Award at the Seville European Film Festival.
Juan Barrero has also worked for National Geographic and taught script-writing at EICTV in San Antonio de los Baños (Cuba).
