Thirteen years ago, TLC introduced viewers to an unconventional family. Kody Brown and his three (and later four) wives were proud polygamists living in Utah, in defiance of the state’s laws against plural marriage. Their reality show, Sister Wives, explored their unique family dynamic, the relationship between the wives, and Kody’s desire to marry for a fourth time.
Now, 17 seasons later, the Browns are still a fixture on TLC. But their family has changed in some major ways since Sister Wives premiered in 2010. Kody has welcomed more children, and a number of his older kids (he has 18 in all) have gone on to start families of their own. The family has also relocated twice, first to Las Vegas to escape the threat of prosecution in Utah, and then to Arizona. Most significantly, three of Kody’s four wives have left him, leaving the polygamist patriarch with just one wife,...

We have a lot to learn about the upcoming season of Sister Wives, but we know the reality TV series about a polygamist family will look vastly different than when the show premiered in 2010. When the series began, Kody Brown had four wives. Now, the former polygamist has one wife and three exes. Those three exes are no longer committed to Kody but certainly appear to be committed to the continuation of Sister Wives. Filming rumors hint at exactly how the series will move forward following the dramatic dismantling of the family. TLC seems interested in splitting filming among multiple locations

At the close of season 17 of Sister Wives, Kody Brown faced the end of three of his four marriages. But don’t count the Brown family out, says Sister Wives showrunner Chris Poole. There’s still a “dramatic” season ahead. He noted the cast “still have to interact” throughout season 18 after Christine, Meri, and Janelle Brown all left their spiritual marriages to Kody.

Thirteen years ago, “Sister Wives” shocked viewers when it debuted on TLC, following the ins and outs of the polygamist Brown family — Kody Brown, his four wives, Robyn, Meri, Janelle and Christine, and their 18 children. Viewers flocked to the screen.
“We needed to be heard, polygamous people,” Christine says now. “We wanted people to know that we’re just regular people who are just doing our best to raise kids and have a big, great, awesome, happy family.”
Howard Lee, president of Discovery Networks and TLC, recalls the first time he saw the non-traditional Brown family. “We knew we had something special,” he says. “It was completely different from anything that we all consider what defines family.”
It’s that difference that keeps viewers returning, he says. “It’s endlessly watchable to see how one man and his four wives navigate each of their relationships. It was just so incredibly...
