Thanks to breakout roles in the Scream revival, Netflix's Wednesday and this year's Beetlejuice sequel, Jenna Ortega is fast becoming one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood, so it probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that she's being courted by Marvel Studios.
According to scooper Mttsh, Ortega is now in talks for an undisclosed Marvel Cinematic Universe role.
It's always worth noting that Marvel meets with a lot of talent, but if Ortega has actually entered negotiations for an upcoming project, there's a good chance the trades will get hold of the story before too long.
Even if she is in talks, there's no guarantee that things will work out. Ortega has a busy schedule ahead, with a lead role in Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun adaptation, and an untitled Trey Edward Shults film that will co-star The Weeknd and Barry Keoghan.

Amazon MGM Studios and Orion Pictures have announced “Nickel Boys” star Ethan Herisse will campaign for Best Actor this awards season (reported in an IndieWire exclusive). He will avoid direct competition from his main co-star Brandon Wilson, who drops down to Best Supporting Actor with fellow castmates Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, Jimmie Fails, and Craig Tate. Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis Taylor (“King Richard”) will contend in Best Supporting Actress.
Directed by Academy Award nominee RaMell Ross, the film will debut December 13 in New York City and December 20 in Los Angeles. “Nickel Boys” stunned audiences when it premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in August, quickly earning Oscar buzz when festival director Julie Huntsinger noted, “You almost can’t speak after because it’s cinematically engaging, arresting. It is emotionally rewarding. It should be one of the most talked about films of the whole year.”

Fresh off its world premiere at Telluride and a plum spot opening the 2024 New York Film Festival, RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys,” an Orion Pictures release, has announced the categories in which it intends to campaign for this coming awards season.
Most notably, the adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, about two young Black men bonded by the horrific experience of being stuck in a 1960s reform school in Florida, will split the titular roles between two categories.
Ethan Herisse, who plays young Elwood, the character which viewers initially experience the film through, will compete in the Best Actor category. Brandon Wilson as Turner, the first friend Elwood makes at the school, whose eyes the audience eventually sees the film through as well, will campaign in the Best Supporting Actor category alongside co-stars like Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, Jimmie Fails, and Craig Tate, who all have smaller,...

Amazon MGM and Orion/Plan B have pushed the release date of “Nickel Boys,” and the film will now debut Dec. 13 in New York and Dec. 20 in Los Angeles, the companies announced on Wednesday. The film was originally scheduled to release Oct. 25 in New York City and Nov. 1 in Los Angeles.

“Nickel Boys,” the acclaimed drama from director RaMell Ross based on a Colson Whitehead novel, is being pushed from its planned release in October to now open in a platform release late in the year in December.
Amazon MGM is rescheduling “Nickel Boys” from a release on October 25 in New York City and November 1 in Los Angeles to now open December 13 in NYC and December 20 in LA, an individual with knowledge of the shift told IndieWire. The film premiered at Telluride and was the opening night film for the New York Film Festival.
The change is significant for a serious Oscar front runner. But distributor Amazon MGM is thinking of another movie of its own that worked its way to some Oscar glory with the same exact approach: last year’s “American Fiction.”

Exclusive: After a successful world premiere at Telluride and opening night at the New York Film Festival, and with Rotten Tomatoes critical reviews at 80% fresh, Amazon MGM Studios is taking Orion/Plan B’s Nickel Boys to screens later in December.
Originally the RaMell Ross-directed and co-written feature based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel was scheduled to go October 25 in New York City and November 1 in Los Angeles. Now Nickel Boys will debut December 13 in NYC and December 20 in LA.
That’s a platform launch similar to Amazon MGM’s Oscar-nominated American Fiction, which opened last year on December 15, ultimately making $21 million stateside. In addition, A24’s The Zone of Interest had a mid-December launch and expanded throughout January off the heat of several awards and noms.
The release-date move gives Nickel Boys ample ways to be discovered not only during awards season but also by moviegoers.

The trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s quirky dark comedy, Mickey 17, dropped a couple of weeks ago and people have already taken to Robert Pattinson‘s unique performance coupled with Bong’s direction. Mickey 17 was originally supposed to be released back in March, but it wound up being taken off the schedule entirely before making the shift to 2025. Some have said that the reason for the delay is that the studio won’t let Bong Joon-ho release his director’s cut but instead want to release a “more accessible” version of the movie.
Now that the film finally has its release date set in place, the MPA Classification and Rating Administration has given Mickey 17 an R-rating “for violent content, language throughout, sexual content and drug material.” With the nature of the film containing multiple deaths of the main character, it’s natural to assume Bong gets to play...

Exclusive: Add this one to the ongoing push-pull between streaming and theatrical. Wolfs, the Jon Watts-scripted and -directed film starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, has become the most viewed movie in Apple TV+ history.
Apple doesn’t break out specifics, but I’m told the film boosted viewership by nearly 30% week over week on the service. It premiered on Apple TV+ on September 27, in more than 100 countries. The film created the biggest viewership spikes in the U.S., UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Germany.
Wolfs stars Clooney and Pitt as “fixers,” shadowy guys who solve thorny problems for the wealthy. These two have to change their lone-wolf habits and work together. The original deal called for a distribution plan that was to start with a wide theatrical release before landing on the streaming service. That got changed to a limited weeklong release before the big streaming bow.

RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys” kicked off the opening night of the 62nd annual New York Film Festival on Friday, September 27. The film chronicles the powerful friendship between two young Black men navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Jim Crow–era Florida. IndieWire caught up with the director and stars on the film’s NYFF red carpet.
Making his first fiction feature, RaMell Ross explained why Colson Whitehead’s 2019 novel “The Nickel Boys” inspired him to make this project. “Colson’s narrative power pulled me into it, as it pulled in every other reader,” he said. “I never have ever read a book thinking about an adaptation. That’s not my thing. I kind of wondered what Elwood would look like, and at one point [when] he realized he was Black or raced, in the context of Colson’s narrative, it’s such a beautiful idea.”

The 62nd New York Film Festival (September 27-October 14) got underway Friday with “Nickel Boys”, rookie feature director RaMell Ross’ daring screen adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel. The film spawned strong applause as well as ardent debate on its challenging mise-en-scène from the attendees at Alice Tully Hall. One thing they agreed on was “King Richard” Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s inevitable second Supporting Actress nod.
At the ritual after-party at Tavern on the Green, an annual celebration for the New York film community, Ellis-Taylor admitted she couldn’t watch herself and ran from the theater. She provides the beating heart for this extraordinary and divisive movie. “Every year we spend months talking about what opening night will be,” said NYFF director Dennis Lim at the after-party, “because it sets the tone for the festival. RaMell is a filmmaker we’ve loved and believed in since ‘Hale County [This Morning, This Evening].’ [‘Nickel Boys’] is not a feel-good movie.

“Nickel Boys”, which opens the New York Film Festival on September 27, wouldn’t exist without producers Dede Gardner (Plan B) and Joslyn Barnes (Louverture Films). Both women boast enviable track records of finding, backing, and promoting rising talent, along with Gardner’s Plan B partner Jeremy Kleiner, who produced with her the Oscar-winners “Moonlight” and “12 Years a Slave,” as well as Best Picture nominees “The Tree of Life,” “The Big Short,” “Selma,” “Vice,” and “Women Talking.”
Barnes is known in the documentary space for producing Oscar nominees “Strong Island” (Yance Ford) and “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” her first collaboration with Brown professor and photographer RaMell Ross. Exclusive: When Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner handed RaMell, the visual artist and filmmaker, Ross Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Nickel Boys — the story of Black boys beaten, tortured and worse at a notorious state-run reform school in the Florida Panhandle — he knew he was being asked to bring his vision to the table, and not what he calls Black “trauma porn.”

Transformers One has come in below expectations, allowing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to hold on to the top spot at the domestic box office for the third week in a row.
Analysts predicted $30 million to $40 million debut for Paramount's animated prequel, which only ended up taking in $25 million from 3,978 venues. The movie - which had a reported budget of $75 million - also made $14 million internationally, for a global total of $39 million.
Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel added $26 million from 4,172 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $225 million, and $329.7 million worldwide.
Transformers One received positive reviews (89% on Rotten Tomatoes) and strong audience scores, so the belief is that ticket sales could rebound over the next few weeks.

Bong Joon Ho fans have been anxiously awaiting a first look at some footage from the Award-winning Parasite director's next project for quite a while, and the first teaser trailer for Mickey 17 was released earlier this week.
Now, an international version has found its way online, and while a lot of the footage is the same (minus the Sinatra tune), there are quite a few new shots.
The (supposedly loose) adaptation of Edward Ashton’s best-selling novel, Mickey7, stars Robert Pattinson (The Batman) as the title character, who is repeatedly cloned to help with the colonization of a dangerous ice-planet.
Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo also star.
This trailer gives us a better idea of what to expect, as Mickey 17 joins forces with his latest clone, Mickey 18, in an attempt to stay alive when Mark Ruffalo's villain declares that all "multiples" - including the original - must be destroyed.

Robert Pattinson dies, and dies, and dies in the new trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s latest project “Mickey 17.”
Based on the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, the sci-fi thriller follows a down-on-his-luck Mickey (Pattinson), who signs up to die without reading the fine print. Mickey has donated his life to science, testing the limits of human nature and capabilities. But when one version of him dies, a clone is created in its place, retaining most of his memories and prepared to take on the next deadly mission.
Here’s a bit of what happens: Mickey drowns in lava, gets his hand chopped off in outer space and freezes to death, as Dean Martin’s “Ain’t’ That a Kick in the Head” plays brightly in the background, hinting at the tone of Bong’s forthcoming project.
“Even on my 17th go-around, I hate dying,” Mickey says in the trailer...

The Juice has well and truly been set loose at the box office, as Tim Burton's long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel claims the No. 1 spot from Deadpool and Wolverine with a record-breaking domestic debut.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice scared up an estimated $110 million in North America ($145M worldwide) to give it the 3rd biggest opening of 2024; 2nd biggest opening ever for Tim Burton; 2nd best September opening, and 2nd biggest opening ever for a horror film, surpassing Warner Bros.' It: Chapter 2.
This also means that the sequel has already surpassed the original movie's entire global gross ($74 million) after a single weekend in theaters.
Getting back to Marvel Studios' massively successful first foray into R-rated territory, and it looks like the movie is set to premiere on Digital platforms early next month (we're still waiting on an official announcement).

Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is now in theaters, and, as fans hoped it would, the movie does explain what happened to the original film's protagonists.
Though Michael Keaton's titular Ghost with the Most was obviously the main attraction in Tim Burton's horror comedy classic, the main characters were actually Adam and Barbara Maitland (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis).
The recently married couple are killed in a car accident in the first few minutes of the movie, and their displaced spirits wind up summoning Betelgeuse in an effort to drive the new owners of their house (Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz and her family) away. Things don't exactly go according to plan, however.
Ultimately, Betelgeuse is banished, and the Deetzs and Maitlands agree to share the house.
Keaton, Ryder and Catherine O'Hara (who plays Lydia's mother) reprise their roles for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but Baldwin and Davis don't appear.

Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel to his cult classic, Beetlejuice, opens this weekend, and the movie is expected to have a ghoulishly good debut at the box office.
According to the latest estimates (via Deadline), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice should take in around $145 million worldwide (Warner Bros. is anticipating an $80M domestic bow). If this proves to be accurate, the sequel will debut with more than the lifetime gross of the original 1988 movie, which finished its run at $74.6M, unadjusted for inflation.
The chaotic horror comedy should also claim the spot from Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine, which - despite briefly being dethroned by Alien: Romulus - has remained at #1 for six weekends it's been in theaters.

The Lido is in a frenzy for Wolfs.

And once the final frames hit the screen and the credits rolled, Wolfs received a nearly five-minute standing ovation. Pitt and Clooney seemed to be soaking up the attention, with Pitt singing along to Sade and Clooney offering a “Grazie” to close it out.

Nickel Boys, RaMell Ross’ big screen interpretation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Nickel Boys, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. Reactions among attendees, including numerous Academy members, have been strongly divided — many were impressed and deeply moved by the film, while others were left cold by it — leaving its Oscar prospects somewhat up in the air.
Ross is a tremendously gifted filmmaker who was Oscar-nominated and won a Peabody Award for his unconventional 2018 documentary feature Hale County This Morning, This Evening, which looked at the Black experience in a part of Alabama. Now just 42, he is making his narrative directorial debut with Nickel Boys, the script of which he co-wrote with his Hale County producer Joslyn Barnes.
The story centers on two young Black men, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), who, in the 1960s, while the...

When Telluride Film Festival director Julie Huntsinger introduced “Nickel Boys” at its world premiere screening on Friday night, she didn’t hold back any excitement – not that she has at all in the walk-up to the 51st annual event. “It’s such a towering achievement. I couldn’t believe it. My jaw dropped to the floor,” Huntsinger told Indiewire in an interview published Thursday. “You almost can’t speak after because it’s cinematically engaging, arresting. It is emotionally rewarding. It should be one of the most talked about films of the whole year.”
Based on the response to the film on Friday night, Huntsinger’s prediction might come true. “Nickel Boys,” filmmaker RaMell Ross’s adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2019 novel “The Nickel Boys,” had audience members searching for new ways to express their admiration for Ross’s work.

The 2024 Venice Film Festival got underway yesterday with the world premiere of Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which opened the proceedings and was greeted with a 3-minute standing ovation.
The review embargo lifted shortly after, and critics have been weighing in online with social media reactions and a handful of full verdicts.
For the most part, it sounds like Burton has delivered a worthy follow-up to his original cult classic, with returning stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara all coming in for high praise.
Jenna Ortega's turn as Lydia Deetz's daughter Astrid may not be quite a successful, with some reviews noting that her character is not especially likeable or sympathetic, and just a little too close to her take on Wednesday Addams from the recent Netflix series.
The most important thing for fans is going to be Keaton's returning Ghost with the Most,...

Four years after being Oscar-nominated for “The Edge of Democracy,” director Petra Costa is back prodding at the current state of Brazilian politics with the documentary “Apocalypse in the Tropics,” which world premieres in the Out of Competition section at the Venice Film Festival.
The film, originally teased as a snapshot of former president Jair Bolsonaro’s infamously poor handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, morphed into a questioning of how democracies blur into theocracies and the role of the country’s growing evangelical movement in Brazil’s recent political turmoil. For perspective, in Brazil, the evangelical population was 5% in the 1980s. Now, it makes up for more than 30%.
“The film is a continuation of an investigation I began with ‘The Edge of Democracy,’” Costa tells Variety. Two of the film’s seminal scenes were captured during the shooting of her previous doc, including the opening scene showcasing a group of...

Beetlejuice is back! Oscar-nominated, singular creative visionary Tim Burton and Oscar nominee and star Michael Keaton reunite for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Burton’s award winning Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the opening film at this year’s Venice Film Festival and the sequel had a four minute standing ovation.
“There are so few opportunities to be in something that you can say is 100% original and unique,” said Keaton, who joked about his character’s evolution.
“I think my character has matured,” Keaton said. “As suave and sensitive as he was in the first, I think he’s even more so in this one.”
The early reviews are raving about the movie.
Deadline writes: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is not clunky. Yes, there are plenty of animation joins that haven’t been smoothed over by CGI. Some of the props look like tat Burton bought in a flea market. But it also has a proper plot,...
