Blue Bloods vet Len Cariou has joined the cast of the upcoming MGM+ comedy American Classic, replacing the late Harris Yulin (Frasier).

Ordered to series in January, American Classic stars Kevin Kline as Richard Bean, a Broadway star who returns to his hometown, family-run theater in the wake of a public meltdown. There, he discovers that his father Linus (Cariou), the theater’s artistic director, has lost a step, leaving Richard’s brother (Jon Tenney) and sister-in-law (Laura Linney) to turn the once-respected venue into a low-rent dinner theater.

Harris Yulin, one of Hollywood’s great character actors, who also delivered an unforgettable performance during a guest-star appearance on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, has died at the age of 87. According to Deadline, citing Yulin’s family and manager, Sue Leibman, Yulin died in New York City of cardiac arrest.

Yulin’s career spanned more than 60 years and encompassed roles on stage, including Broadway, as well as in films and television shows. The Internet Movie Database lists 138 screen credits dating back to 1970. Among them are Kojak, Little House on the Prairie, Night Moves, Scarface, Ghostbuster, II, A Clear and Present Danger, Frasier, Training Day, 24, The Blacklist, Veep, FBI: Most Wanted, and Ozark. He earned an Emmy nomination for his work on Frasier and, in the days prior to his death, was set to begin work on a new show called American Classic, starring Kevin Kline and Laura Linney.

Veteran character actor Harris Yulin, whose leathery voice and understated menace enlivened everything from Scarface to Ozark, died of cardiac arrest in New York City on 10 June, his family and longtime manager Sue Leibman announced. He was 88.

Over a six-decade career Yulin amassed more than 100 screen credits. Filmgoers remember him as bent Miami detective Mel Bernstein in Brian De Palma’s 1983 gangster classic, as Judge Stephen Wexler in Ghostbusters II, and as the hawkish national-security adviser in Clear and Present Danger.

Television offered equal range: an Emmy-nominated guest turn on Frasier (1996), a chilling Cardassian impersonator on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and, most recently, Buddy Dieker, the irascible basement tenant on Netflix’s Ozark. A devoted stage actor, he debuted off-Broadway in 1963, later appearing on Broadway in Hedda Gabler, The Price and The Diary of Anne Frank, and won a Lucille Lortel Award for directing The Trip to Bountiful.

If you've been watching any television since the 1970s, odds are you've probably seen his face in something. Yet, one of his most memorable roles is also his least recognizable, since his face was buried in make-up. The movies do not deserve Mary Louise Parker. Her work in the New York theater scene since the 1990s has been rightfully praised from Broadway to the Battery, and the serialized nature of television has allowed her to flex character-developing muscles and play the emotional scales several times over; say what you will about those later seasons of Weeds, the Showtime dramedy that cast Parker as a pot-selling suburbanite, but she always managed to throw in a look, an offbeat line reading or a bit of business that provided a nice second-hand high.

Zoya also has just one week to live, but the troubled woman already knows that because shes been repeatedly experiencing this very last week of her life for quite some time. In fact, shes lost track of just how many times shes endured her very own Groundhog Day.

In an attempt to survive her dilemma, Zoya leans into these peculiarities, but alas, she cant find a cure for her mysterious predicament and illness until one day, when she meets a gifted student named Paula (the ubiquitous Ayo Edebiri). When doctors tell Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker), the quantum physicist at the center of Omni Loop, that she has a black hole growing inside her chest and little time left to live, she seems oddly unfazed. A montage speeds us through the next few days of her life as she’s taken home from the hospital, then to the beach by her family, who surprise her with a candle-covered cake two weeks ahead of her actual birthday, which she likely won’t live to see.

Throughout each of those scenes, Zoya sits in the center of the frame, staring forward with a placid look on her face. It would be fair to assume that hers is a state of shock—the look of a woman who’s unable to process the finality, maybe even the absurdity, of her diagnosis. In truth, though, Zoya seems so unmoved because she’s seen all of this before.

Summer’s over. Looks like it’s time to get back to work. And by work, we mean some serious movie watching. Luckily September doesn’t disappoint. After starring in five films and eleven TV series last year, Ayo Edebiri’s 2024 is just slightly less crazy. Following up The Bear and Inside Out 2 this summer, she’ll next be seen in Omni Loop, a sci-fi feature that premiered at SXSW earlier this year. Now set for a September 20 theatrical and digital release from Magnolia Pictures, the first trailer has arrived.

Written and directed by Bernardo Britto, the film follows a quantum physicist (Mary-Louise Parker) who finds herself stuck in a time loop, with a black hole growing in her chest and only a week to live. “Groundhog Day,” but make it about an inescapable terminal illness. In writer/director Bernardo Britto’s “Omni Loop,” Mary-Louise Parker plays a quantum physicist who learns she has only a week to live. Except she learns that many times over, and as she says in the trailer, “This has happened before. Many times.” IndieWire shares the exclusive trailer for “Omni Loop,” which premiered at SXSW and will hit theaters from Magnolia this fall, below.

Here’s the official synopsis: “A quantum physicist (Mary-Louise Parker) finds herself stuck in a time loop, with a black hole growing in her chest and only a week to live. When she meets a gifted student (Ayo Edebiri), they team up to save her life — and to unlock the mysteries of time travel.”

The cast also includes Hannah Pearl Utt, Chris Witaske, Carlos Jacott, Harris Yulin, Steven Maier, and Eddie Cahill.

Training Day is one of Denzel Washingtons most successful movies, but director Antoine Fuqua has revealed why the films original test screening was almost a disaster. During an appearance at the Directors on Directors panel at Sdcc, Fuqua recalled the negative audience reactions to the movie all being down to Washingtons popularity as an actor.

As per Collider, Fuqua explained that the main issue with the screening came down to Washington playing the movies antagonistic Alonzo Harris, who is killed by the Russian mafia in the final act of the movie. For many audiences, the death of Washington on screen was too much to take, and ultimately led to them disapproving of the movie as a whole. He said:

Training Day didnt score high in the test screening because I killed Denzel. People were pissed. I almost got ran out of the theater on that one. That was probably the lowest test screening.

History repeats itself in this ingenious but surprisingly heartfelt sci-fi, which takes the premise of Groundhog Day and fashions from it a poignant statement about life and mortality. Refreshingly for the genre, it focuses on a middle-aged woman — a scientist-slash-physicist, even — whose 55th birthday and final breath will occur within the same week. But though there is an element of resistance to the latter, Omni Loop is unusual in that it isn’t simply about breaking the cycle; Bernardo Britto’s film is about facing the inevitable, gently phasing out the genre elements to reach an understated but emotional climax.
