Blue Bloods vet Len Cariou has joined the cast of the upcoming MGM+ comedy American Classic, replacing the late Harris Yulin (Frasier).
Ordered to series in January, American Classic stars Kevin Kline as Richard Bean, a Broadway star who returns to his hometown, family-run theater in the wake of a public meltdown. There, he discovers that his father Linus (Cariou), the theater’s artistic director, has lost a step, leaving Richard’s brother (Jon Tenney) and sister-in-law (Laura Linney) to turn the once-respected venue into a low-rent dinner theater.

It’s been over 30 years since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine premiered, so which are the best episodes of that first season?
When Star Trek: Deep Space Nine premiered in early 1993, it was a huge deal. Back then, a new Trek series was a daring idea, and the question of whether fans would accept it. There was also the unique setting, a space station around Bajor, a planet just freed from Cardassian occupation. The series was promoted as the idea of Starfleet and the unique locals mixing together.
The two-part premiere introduced the wrinkle of a wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant halfway across the galaxy, affording new storytelling options. There was also how Sisko was supposedly the “Emissary” of the Prophets, the powerful aliens residing in the wormhole.
The series is notable in that, unlike Tng, its first season is quite strong. Sure, a few duds (“Move Along Home”) and...

Denzel Washington initially didn’t have a particular name in mind when asked about the greatest of all time in the NBA. However, he had a particular story about an NBA legend, which makes it pretty obvious who the acting legend considers the Goat. Being a huge fan of basketball, Washington got to experience firsthand the fame enjoyed by Michael Jordan.
Washington also revealed that he was a huge Lakers fan. He closely observes the game and knows well enough to assess the greatness of a player. Interestingly, he appeared as a basketball coach in the 1998 sports drama film, He Got Game, alongside professional player Ray Allen.

In its day, Sex and the City did what The Mary Tyler Moore Show could only hint at: portrayed what dating is actually like for thirtysomething women. It certainly didn’t get everything right, and some of it looks cringey (or worse) today, but the people who made it have a chance others of its era don’t: It can try to do better in its sequel.
And Just Like That…, now in its third season, catches up with three of Sex and the City’s original characters — and adds a couple of their newer friends — to show what dating is like for people across the gender spectrum, age fiftysomething and up. The latest episode concerns itself with characters who are fiftysomething and way up, and if this ends up being Harris Yulin’s very last performance, we may all be glad it was so horny.

Harris Yulin was the kind of actor who literally made us sit up and go, “Wait, I know that guy!” Whether he was barking orders in Clear and Present Danger, glowering in Training Day, or stealing scenes as a crooked cop in Scarface, Yulin had the rare ability to turn supporting roles into unforgettable moments. With over 50 years of screen and stage under his belt, he was Hollywood’s go-to guy for authority figures with a bite, and eyebrows that could launch a thousand suspicions.
Emmy-nominated and endlessly versatile, Yulin popped up in everything from Frasier to Ozark to Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, playing everyone from judges to schemers to charming oddballs. Sadly, the scene-stealing legend passed away at 87 due to cardiac arrest in New York City. He may never have had one big breakout role, but Yulin left behind a towering legacy built on nuance, grit, and a whole lot of gravitas.

"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" doesn't quite have the cultural cache of "The Original Series" or "The Next Generation," but don't think it's lesser because of that. Many Trekkies, including at least one person at /Film, have argued that "DS9" is the very finest "Star Trek" of them all.
"Deep Space Nine" was set on the titular space station, orbiting the formerly occupied planet Bajor. This singular setting wasn't the only way that "DS9" broke up the "Trek" formula; many of the show's episodes got darker than "Trek" usually does. Veteran character actor Harris Yulin, whose leathery voice and understated menace enlivened everything from Scarface to Ozark, died of cardiac arrest in New York City on 10 June, his family and longtime manager Sue Leibman announced. He was 88.
Over a six-decade career Yulin amassed more than 100 screen credits. Filmgoers remember him as bent Miami detective Mel Bernstein in Brian De Palma’s 1983 gangster classic, as Judge Stephen Wexler in Ghostbusters II, and as the hawkish national-security adviser in Clear and Present Danger.
Television offered equal range: an Emmy-nominated guest turn on Frasier (1996), a chilling Cardassian impersonator on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and, most recently, Buddy Dieker, the irascible basement tenant on Netflix’s Ozark. A devoted stage actor, he debuted off-Broadway in 1963, later appearing on Broadway in Hedda Gabler, The Price and The Diary of Anne Frank, and won a Lucille Lortel Award for directing The Trip to Bountiful.

Arthur Penn’s Night Moves is one of the great revisionist noirs, taking its place alongside Robert Altman’s The Long Goodbye and Roman Polanski’s Chinatown. Like those films, it not only brazenly subverts the tropes of the classic Hollywood private eye film, but also uses the genre’s pervasive aura of moral corruption and social anomie to comment on the American scene in the wake of political scandals and the collapse of the 1960s counterculture into the rampant self-absorption of the Me Decade. All three films eschew pat resolutions, let alone the comforts of a return to status quo order.
Night Moves cadges elements from classic noir films. It lifts basic plot points about the search for the runaway daughter of a moneyed family from Howard Hawks’s The Big Sleep, and emulates that film’s excessively labyrinthine narrative, though here you probably don’t need to pay...

Harris Yulin is one of the most prolific character actors currently working in film and TV. If you've been watching any television since the 1970s, odds are you've probably seen his face in something. Yet, one of his most memorable roles is also his least recognizable, since his face was buried in make-up. That would be a reference to the "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Duet," where he played a Cardassian named Aamin Maritza.
"Deep Space Nine" is set on Bajor, a world previously occupied by the Cardassian military. The series' primary Bajoran viewpoint comes from Major Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor; read our interview about her "Star Trek" experience here), a former resistance fighter still scarred by her people's years of subjugation. That backstory weighs heavily on "Duet" (written by Peter Allan Fields).

MoMA’s Bulle Ogier retrospective was occasion upon occasion for discovery, and even then it was great fortune to encounter Candy Mountain, a 1987 road picture directed by legendary photographer Robert Frank and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer starring Kevin J. O’Connor, Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, and Dr. John, with the legendary French actress in a small, pivotal supporting role. Replete with cold, pale colors and a thoroughly comfortable vibe, it’s also, from the 2024’s vantage, more than a little melancholy for introducing sequestered communities that very likely don’t exist today.

The movies do not deserve Mary Louise Parker. Her work in the New York theater scene since the 1990s has been rightfully praised from Broadway to the Battery, and the serialized nature of television has allowed her to flex character-developing muscles and play the emotional scales several times over; say what you will about those later seasons of Weeds, the Showtime dramedy that cast Parker as a pot-selling suburbanite, but she always managed to throw in a look, an offbeat line reading or a bit of business that provided a nice second-hand high.

Omni Loop presents an intriguing premise. Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker), a brilliant quantum physicist, finds herself caught in a time loop while a mysterious black hole grows in her chest. Yes, you read that correctly. Zoya also has just one week to live, but the troubled woman already knows that because shes been repeatedly experiencing this very last week of her life for quite some time. In fact, shes lost track of just how many times shes endured her very own Groundhog Day.
In an attempt to survive her dilemma, Zoya leans into these peculiarities, but alas, she cant find a cure for her mysterious predicament and illness until one day, when she meets a gifted student named Paula (the ubiquitous Ayo Edebiri). When doctors tell Zoya Lowe (Mary-Louise Parker), the quantum physicist at the center of Omni Loop, that she has a black hole growing inside her chest and little time left to live, she seems oddly unfazed. A montage speeds us through the next few days of her life as she’s taken home from the hospital, then to the beach by her family, who surprise her with a candle-covered cake two weeks ahead of her actual birthday, which she likely won’t live to see.
Throughout each of those scenes, Zoya sits in the center of the frame, staring forward with a placid look on her face. It would be fair to assume that hers is a state of shock—the look of a woman who’s unable to process the finality, maybe even the absurdity, of her diagnosis. In truth, though, Zoya seems so unmoved because she’s seen all of this before.

One of Denzel Washington's most iconic movies, which won him his second Oscar of his career, has found streaming life more than 20 years after release. Training Day, the 2001 cop drama which also stars Ethan Hawke, is officially one of the most popular movies on Paramount+, narrowly creeping into the top 10. Training Day falls just short of Mean Girls, which has been enjoying success on Paramount+ for the better part of a week now, and also A Quiet Place Part 2, the sequel starring Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy. In addition to Washington and Hawke, Training Day also stars Scott Glenn, Tom Berenger, Harris Yulin, and Raymond J. Barry, and the film currently sits at a 74% score from critics and an 89% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Training Day is one of Denzel Washingtons most successful movies, but director Antoine Fuqua has revealed why the films original test screening was almost a disaster. During an appearance at the Directors on Directors panel at Sdcc, Fuqua recalled the negative audience reactions to the movie all being down to Washingtons popularity as an actor.
As per Collider, Fuqua explained that the main issue with the screening came down to Washington playing the movies antagonistic Alonzo Harris, who is killed by the Russian mafia in the final act of the movie. For many audiences, the death of Washington on screen was too much to take, and ultimately led to them disapproving of the movie as a whole. He said:
Training Day didnt score high in the test screening because I killed Denzel. People were pissed. I almost got ran out of the theater on that one. That was probably the lowest test screening.

History repeats itself in this ingenious but surprisingly heartfelt sci-fi, which takes the premise of Groundhog Day and fashions from it a poignant statement about life and mortality. Refreshingly for the genre, it focuses on a middle-aged woman — a scientist-slash-physicist, even — whose 55th birthday and final breath will occur within the same week. But though there is an element of resistance to the latter, Omni Loop is unusual in that it isn’t simply about breaking the cycle; Bernardo Britto’s film is about facing the inevitable, gently phasing out the genre elements to reach an understated but emotional climax.

Daredevil star Élodie Yung recently revealed that she would love to return as Elektra in Daredevil: Born Again, she just hasn't been asked to come back yet.
"Oh my gosh, I would love that," said Yung while speaking with toofab. "It’s so funny because my fans are like, 'Can you come back?' and I’m like, 'Ask Mr. Marvel,' you have to ask Mr. Marvel for that, not me, because I would gladly replay this part. Are you kidding? Training Day's strength lies in the relationship between Alonzo and Jake, showcasing the real corruption within law enforcement. The theory that Jake was working with Alonzo all along doesn't hold up under scrutiny - the events would be too absurd. Training Day doesn't need ridiculous theories, as it is already a classic with its gritty and realistic portrayal of corruption in the police force.
The classic crime thriller, Training Day, would have been completely ruined if one obscure theory regarding the movie were proven correct. Starring Denzel Washington as Detective Alonzo Harris and Ethan Hawke as Officer Jake Hoyt, Training Day centers around Alonzo showing Jake the ropes to making detective over the course of a day. Filled with great acting performances, particularly one that would earn Washington his second Academy Award, Training Day remains one of Denzel Washington's best movies. Armin Shimerman's favorite episode of DS9 is "Duet," which delves into Bajoran nationalism and Cardassian war crimes. "Duet" showcases DS9's ability to address social issues within the context of space exploration. Armin Shimerman has other favorite Ferengi episodes, including "Bar Association" and "Little Green Men," which explore worker's rights and the dynamics of the Ferengi family.
Although he's best known for playing Quark, one of Armin Shimerman's favorite Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes has nothing to do with the Ferengi. DS9's Quark was at the center of some of the show's best episodes, including beloved Ferengi comedies like "Little Green Men." However, there's very little to laugh about in Armin Shimerman's favorite episode from DS9 season 1.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 1 is notoriously uneven, but it contains flashes of brilliance that demonstrate the potential of the premise. DS9's ability to explore the gray areas...
