On Sept. 16, 1984, the Anthony Yerkovich-created series Miami Vice premiered on NBC and went on to revolutionize television with its ultra-stylized visuals, cutting-edge MTV-era music and unconventional fashion highlighting the riveting weekly adventures of hard-bitten undercover detectives. “The ambition of the show was to break the form of everything that had come before,” the series’ executive producer Michael Mann tells THR.
In the Casablanca of ’80s Miami, boat-dwelling Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and suave New Yorker Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) drove luxury cars, averted explosions and busted drug lords in bold and unexpected designer outfits. Crockett’s jacket-over-t-shirt signature triggered a paradigm shift in the traditional concept of menswear, which endures 40 years later. “It changed the way men dressed in the world,” says Emmy-nominated season one costume designer Jodie Tillen. “It gave men permission to wear pastels.”
Today, its slouchy silhouettes and soft colors are heavily influencing men on the red carpet.

We love rock & roll, and so do most moviegoers, which is why cinema is filled with heroes who get together with their friends to pound out some numbers. Whether they do it for fame and fortune or to just hang out with buddies, pop bands are inherently cinematic, tying together moving images and sound to create something spectacular. That’s particularly true of fictional groups, who often draw from real-world inspirations and transform them into moving protagonists or hated villains.
This list covers ten of the best fictional bands in cinema history. The key word here is “bands,” as we ignore solo acts, even from really good films. So Mac Sledge from Tender Mercies won’t show up, nor will Noni Jean from Beyond the Lights. Also, we’re looking at fictional groups here, so the Ramones from Rock & Roll High School don’t show up, nor do Talking Heads,...

The '80s were a different time; shoulder pads were in, Reaganomics was taking over the country, and in 1984, a hyper-stylish show called "Miami Vice" was about to become all the rage. Before the Florida-set cop series ever premiered on NBC, though, it had already inspired another series, one that seemed to have very little in common with the Michael Mann-produced action show.
That series was "The Golden Girls," the popular and gut-bustingly funny sitcom about women of a certain age that has only become more beloved in the decades since it ended. "The Golden Girls" is remembered for its positive and honest conversations about aging and its characters' penchant for savage, hilarious quips. It also bolstered the fame of its already-famous stars, Bea Arthur ("Maude"), Betty White ("The Mary Tyler Moore Show"), Rue McClanahan (also "Maude"), and Estelle Getty ("Mask"). Coined by “Miami Vice” actor Philip Michael Thomas back in the 1980s, an Egot is a designation for anyone in the performing arts who has won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. There are debates as to whether you need to win all competitively, but an honorary award has been deemed acceptable to most awards score-keepers. Of the 22 individuals who fall in one of the two categories, only six have been Black, though 2023 could add a few more familiar faces to the list, including Violas Davis. If she wins a Grammy on February 5, it won’t make up for her egregious recent Oscar snub, but she will be a member of the Egot club.
Here is a look at those who have claimed the honor and those just one award away from doing so.

The star-studded 14-minute set won an award for Outstanding Variety Special during the two-day awards showcase.

Less than two months after Netflix announced plans to add ad-supported tiers to its streaming subscription service, the international ad festival Cannes Lions has announced Netflix’s co-ceo Ted Sarandos as its Entertainment Person of the Year.
Cannes Lions, which now bills itself as an “international festival of creativity,” said Netflix would appear for the first time at the event this year, where Sarandos will receive his honor.
Sarandos will be joining Sway podcast host Kara Swisher and MediaLink’s Michael Kassan on the stage of Cannes’ Lumiere Theatre on June 23 to discuss his future plans for Netflix.
Cannes Lions Chairman Philip Thomas called Sarandos “a leading creative force who has developed a body of truly compelling content at Netflix, transforming the creative landscape over the last decade.”
The high-flying streamer was brought down to earth last quarter after posting disappointing figures showing it lost 200,000 subscribers.

The eighties were an era of excess. The party never stopped, the music was awesome and the fashions - well, they were bold to say the least. No show ever as perfectly encapsulated its era as Miami Vice, which merged the music and style of MTV with a hardcore police procedural, with none other than Michael Mann as its show runner. It made icons out of its two stars, Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Rico Tubbs and ran for five seasons. Are all of theme winners? No.…...

If you’re a fan of the 1980s and of wearing sport coats over brightly colored t-shirts, then we’ve got some good news for you. On Tuesday, actor Don Johnson told ITV “This Morning” hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that “we’re kicking around some thoughts” on a potential “Miami Vice” reboot.

It’s the most coveted honor in all of Hollywood: the Egot.
Representing the top awards in television (Emmy), music (Grammy), film (Oscar), and theater (Tony), it’s considered the grand slam of show business — a four of a kind sweep that only the rarest of stars have been able to achieve.

The group and his family announced his death in a statement on Facebook: “Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia. … Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community & millions of fans worldwide.”
Commonly known as the Eagles but with no “the” on album covers, the group started out as Linda Ronstadt’s backup band in early-1970s Los Angeles and would become one of the world’s biggest acts. Frey wrote or co-wrote many of the group’s best-known songs including “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Already Gone,” “Take It Easy,...

According to El Mayimbe from Latin-Review, Universal Pictures is looking to develop another big screen adaptation of the classic 1980s series Miami Vice. The studio is supposedly already out meeting with screenwriters and taking pitches for the project, which they want to turn into a franchise.
In 2006 Michael Mann made a Miami Vice movie that in no way represented the original series in any way, shape, or form. I like a lot of Mann's films, but his adaptation of Miami Vice with Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell isn’t one of them.
The NBC crime drama series was created by Anthony Yerkovich and was actually produced by Mann. The show ran for five seasons from 1984–1989, and it starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs. They were two Metro Police detectives working undercover in Miami.
I imagine this next time around the studio...

The buddy cop genre has definitely produced some amazing flicks and “Let’s Be Cops” could very well be the next winner.
In the new red band trailer, Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr show off their on-screen chemistry in the tradition of Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.
Also starring Rob Riggle, Nina Dobrev, James D’Arcy and Andy Garcia, “Let’s Be Cops” is slated to hit theaters on August 13th.
Per the synopsis, “Two struggling pals dress as police officers for a costume party and become neighborhood sensations. But when these newly-minted ‘heroes’ get tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives, they must put their fake badges on the line.”...

Crockett and Tubbs, meet Fallon and Higgins. “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon and his announcer Steve Higgins donned pastels to spoof the beloved television cop show “Miami Vice” for an opening sequence. See video: Chris Christie and Jimmy Fallon Present ‘The Evolution of Dad Dancing’ “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” is taping four shows in Orlando starting Monday, and apparently while they were in the general vicinity of Miami they figured they would channel Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas (Crockett and Tubbs). Clearly, these two belong to the city. Even if they're a little bit confused about which city they're in.

Kent Lambert says:
I would like to submit several photos of my cat Mochi and me, and one of Mochi and his “sister” Asha sitting on me sleeping. I am very tight with both of them, but Mochi and I are especially close pals — my song “August Song” (trippy cat-heavy video by Jodie Mack and Emily Kuehn can be viewed in HD here) — is somewhat of an ode to him.
You can choose your favorite of the photos I submit, I’m having trouble picking just one!
Underground Film Journal says:
We had to go with the “family” photo as our favorite above, but two bonus photos of Kent and Mochi are below. Their close bond is quite amazingly evident!
We’ve been über-fans of Kent Lambert‘s phenomenal media remixes all the way back when his hilarious Whack, featuring actor Philip Michael Thomas, screened at the 2001 New York Underground Film Festival.

The target audience for "Frozen" was tucked in bed by the time Idina Menzel showed up on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," but her performance is proof positive that adults can't resist the Oscar-winning tune either.
Menzel sang a slightly less bombastic version of "Let It Go" in a pre-recorded bit with Fallon and The Roots, who played along on kids' toys. It's nothing short of adorable, especially when Questlove takes out his kazoo. And it's a refreshing change for those of us who have listened to the soundtrack on repeat for the past few months, whether by choice or by demand.
Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who wrote "Let It Go," won an Oscar for Best Original Song; their thank-you speech was equally charming. Robert Lopez is now the youngest person with an Egot, a term coined by Philip Michael Thomas that is short for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar,...

To promote the upcoming fifth season of "Archer," the show has placed some revealing new ads on the Reddit forum titled "gonewild," which is where users go to show off their nude bodies in exchange for forum "karma."
The ads link to the FX site advertising Season 5, subtitled "Vice," which Zap2it can confirm takes its inspiration from "Miami Vice," the 1980s cop drama starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. It's also a bit of a reboot for the animated FX comedy.
H. Jon Benjamin, who voices the title character for "Archer," cracks that he thinks it all came about when creator Adam Reed went on a bender.
"There's a lot of changes and a lot that stays the same obviously, but I think Adam Reed probably got very drunk one night while he was writing on his computer," Benjamin says in a conference call with the press.

On Sunday (September 22) the 65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will take over Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre, and a who’s who of top-name celebrities will compete for media attention by getting all gussied up in designer duds. In fact, over the past six decades Tinseltown favorites have set the fashion pace with their red carpet choices, and it all got started way back in January 1949.
Hosted by NBC radio legend Walter O’Keefe, the 1st Annual Emmy Awards (the ‘Primetime’ didn’t get added until the Daytime Emmys debuted in 1974) was minuscule compared to today’s fanfare. The Hollywood Athletic Club played host to stars like Shirley Dinsdale, Rita LeRoy, Patricia Morrison, Mike Stokey, and Bill Welsh.

It was the show that hit TV like an air drop of drugs in the Everglades: "Miami Vice" became an instant sensation, changing not only 80s fashion and facial hair but what viewers could expect from cop shows on the small screen.
Legend has it -- or one legend, anyway -- that NBC head Brandon Tartikoff scribbled "MTV cops" on a napkin and then went in search of someone to make it happen. Whether that's true or not, when it debuted in 1984 "Vice" was the first show to combine the cool of New Wave and pop music with a police procedural that was both more gritty and flashy at once. Before "I"ll Be There For You" ushered in "Friends" and then wormed its way into our brains, Jan Hammer's pulsing theme for "Miami Vice" hit no. 1 on the Billboard chart and soundtracked one of the most iconic opening credits sequences of all time.

Season 1, Episode 1: “Brother’s Keeper” (Pilot)
Directed by Thomas Carter
Written by Anthony Yerkovich
Original air date: Sept. 16, 1984
Hey, Tubbs…ever consider a career in Southern law enforcement?” – Crockett
Miami Vice premiered on September 16, 1984 with a two-hour season premiere. The episode titled “Brother’s Keeper” garnered critical acclaim, and the series went on to become a symbol of the times. Legend has it that NBC President Brandon Tartikoff started the ball rolling after he scribbled “MTV Cops” on a napkin, and then went looking for someone at NBC to produce the show. However the series was actually the brainchild of scriptwriter-turned-director Michael Mann (coming off the critical success of Manhunter), and Hill Street Blues writer-producer Anthony Yerkovich, who was already drafting the idea based by news stories about the thriving drug trade in Florida. But regardless what Yerkovich brought to the table, the show’s most dominant creative force was Michael Mann.

With her Tony win in the Best Original Score category tonight for her work on the Broadway smash "Kinky Boots," musician Cyndi Lauper has inched a step closer to some elite industry awards company. The term "Egot," coined by actor Philip Michael Thomas, was launched into notoriety by the television series "30 Rock" and has become a bit of a running joke in the business, particularly on the various entertainment awards circuits. So far, 11 individuals have "won" the figurative Egot -- an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. The last was producer Scott Rudin, who reached the peak last...

I don’t think anyone going to see Sparkle expects a gritty slice of realism or a life-altering experience. It’s an unabashed soap opera with the curiosity value of singer Jordin Sparks in her big-screen debut and Whitney Houston in her final film appearance. If you know all that going in, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed coming out. My memories of the 1976 movie (with Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, and Philip Michael Thomas) are too dim to make comparisons, but I know that it took place in Harlem in the 1950s, while this remake is set in Detroit during the 1960s. It turns out to be a comfortable fit, and the movie’s colorful period production and costume...

So, the crazy advertising circus that is Cannes is over. And all the awards have been given out. But no one likes going home empty handed.
Here are the Unofficial Cannes Lions winners…
Juiciest rumour – grand prix: The big networks have been leaning on the judges to vote for their own network’s entries.
Juiciest rumour – gold: Haymarket will close the print editions of ‘advertising Bible’ Campaign or Marketing in the UK and make them online only.
Juiciest rumour – silver: Block voting by networks will lead to a boycott of Cannes.
Biggest criticism of Cannes – grand prix: Presentations were repeats of those given at other festivals earlier in the year.
Biggest criticism of Cannes – gold: The work wasn’t as good as last year.

Good news, film fans: Sparkle has found her Stix.
Okay, so that sounds like either complete gibberish or a song title from an episode of "Jem," but it's actually the latest bit of hot movie news from Hollywood, as Deadline is reporting that Derek Luke is set to co-star as Stix opposite Jordin Sparks in the upcoming remake of the 1976 cult classic hit "Sparkle."
As you may recall, we reported last month that former "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks will by playing the lead role in "Sparkle," which tells the story of three sisters -- Sparkle, Sister and, um, Dolores -- who try to make it big in the world of singing only to face troubles that threaten to tear their family apart.
So where does Stix come in? Well, he's the friend who becomes Sparkle's manager -- and more, if you catch our drift -- only to face...

[1] Zach Gilford, best known as sensitive Qb Matt Saracen on Friday Night Lights, will be starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand. Described [2] as "a combination of Die Hard and High Noon," the action film revolves around a border town sheriff (Schwarzenegger) who finds himself tasked with stopping a drug kingpin from crossing the U.S. border. Gilford will play one of the cops working under Schwarzenegger's character. The Last Stand marks the English-language debut of South Korean filmmaker Kim Ji-woon (I Saw the Devil), as well as Schwarzenegger's return to acting. Given the kind of work that Schwarzenegger and Gilford have each done in the past, I'm having a little trouble imagining them starring next to each other. But Gilford's a wonderful actor who deserves to get way more work than he does, so I'm just happy to see him pick up a higher-profile gig for once. The Last Stand...

Confirmed in an interview with producer Debra Martin Chase, Luke will play Stix, the part played by Miami Vice's Philip Michael Thomas in the original. The story follows a group of three young singers, led by a girl named Sparkle (Jordin Sparks), as they move from the church choir to the big time. In addition to being a budding songwriter, Stix also serves as the group's manager and is Sparkle's love interest. Houston...

Sony Pictures is teaming up with the creative team behind the hit Bet series The Game (Mara Brock Akil and husband Salim Akil) for a remake of the 1976 film musical, Sparkle.
Mara (who also c0-created the TV sitcom Girlfriends) will write the script, while Salim (who’s Jumping The Broom with Angela Bassett and Paula Patton, will hit theaters in May), will direct.
The husband/wife team will also produce the film under their Akil Production Co. banner.
Apparently, Sony was so impressed with Jumping The Broom that they wanted to work with the Akils again.
The original 1976 film, inspired by the real-life story of The Supremes, starred Lonette McKee, Irene Cara, Philip Michael Thomas, Dwan Smith, Mary Alice and others. It centered on the rough and tumble lives of 3 musically-talented sisters from Harlem, their rise to become major stars of the ’50s, and the unfortunate turmoil it all leads to.

Director David E. Durston is best known for a little exploitation flick called I Drink Your Blood, which he followed up in 1972 with Stigma, starring "Miami Vice"'s Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) in his first movie. In honor of the recently passed Valentine's Day, Stigma gets the Trembles treatment!
Synopsis:
On probation after performing an illegal abortion, young black Dr. Calvin Crosse (Thomas) hitches his way along with discharged soldier Bill Waco (Harlan Poe) to the island of Stilford off the coast of Maine. Crosse is there to assist one of his medical school teachers, Dr. Thor, on a mysterious project but arrives to find the man dead. Taking up residence in the dead man's home despite suspicion from Sheriff Whitehead (Peter H. Clune) and general unfriendliness from the townsfolk, Crosse discovers (through a taped message left by Thor [voiced by director Durston]) that Dr. Thor was investigating a V.D. epidemic on the island.
