According to Variety, Song Kang-ho, star of the Academy Award-winning film Parasite, has lined up his next project, which will be the series adaptation of a political thriller titled Inside Men. Hive Media Corp, who will be producing the series, had announced the development of the project Thursday morning and the studio has revealed it is currently in early pre-production. The filming is expected to commence sometime next year. However, it is not yet revealed where the show is intending to broadcast or stream.

This adaptation will be based on the 2015 film of the same name. That film was said to have been adapted into “an incomplete webtoon,” which was written by Yoon Tae-ho. This incarnation was called The Insiders and it had been published between 2010-2012 in the Hankyoreh newspaper. Song Kang-ho, star of Oscar-winning film “Parasite,” will headline a series adaptation of hit film “Inside Men.”

The project was revealed on Thursday by producer Hive Media Corp. which said that the show is in the early stages of pre-production. Cameras are expected to roll in 2025.

No broadcaster or streamer has yet been attached.

The 2015 film was a political thriller that was adapted from an incomplete webtoon, penned by Yoon Tae-ho called “The Insiders” and which was published 2010-2012 in the Hankyoreh newspaper.

The webtoon featured a political bruiser, played by Lee Byung-hun in the film, who seeks revenge after being ruined by politicians and the media. Directed and written by Woo Min-ho, the film added other elements including a prosecutor (portrayed by Cho Sueng-woo), a presidential candidate Portrayed by Lee Gyeong-young) and a newspaper editor (portrayed by Baek Yoon-sik).

Disney+’s Uncle Samsik has finally come to an end, and the ending was quite heartbreaking. The show, which stars Song Kang-Ho in the lead, is a historical drama that documents a tumultuous time for Korean “democracy.” The show follows the life of a fictional character named Park Doochill, who is determined to bring three meals a day to every person in his nation. While his motives are noble, getting there proves quite difficult, which leads him to take many irrational steps for the ultimate betterment of the country. The 16 episodes of the show mainly document the years 1959 and 1960, the fall of the Rhee government, and how it came about. By the end of the series, things get truly intense, with many of the main characters killed off. In the final three episodes, we see how things came together for the military and who betrayed Samsik, leading to the ultimate scene of the show.

It’s coming in July of 2024, it’s directed by Osgood Perkins (The Blackcoat’s Daughter), and it features Maika Monroe (It Follows) as an FBI agent who discovers a personal connection between her and a serial killer who has ties to the occult. BBC Korea Launch

BBC Studios is launching ‘BBC Kids’ in Korea as a monthly subscription service on Genie TV Kids Land, a dedicated Iptv service for young children, in collaboration with telecoms and internet service provider KT. Through the partnership, BBC Studios Asia will bring a wide range of children’s content to Korean audiences, in one place for the first time. The service will feature a mix of content in English language as well as a variety of popular titles dubbed into Korean for the first time. Titles available include seasons 1-4 of BAFTA- and Emmy- award-winning pre-school animation series “Hey Duggee” on Genie TV Kids Land among IPTVs. Series 4 is exclusive to this service in Korea, “Andy’s Global Adventures,” “Yakka Dee,” “Go Jetters,” “Sarah & Duck,” and “My World Kitchen.” The service will be available for KRW5,000 ($3.70) per month.

Disney+ tentpole Uncle Samsik will debut on May 15 on the platform globally, and on Hulu. The streamer also announced that Korean crime thriller Nine Puzzles will premiere exclusively on the platform in 2025.

South Korean series Uncle Samsik stars veteran actor Song Kang-ho as Pak Doochill/Uncle Samsik and Byun Yo-han (Mr. Sunshine) as Kim San.

Set in 1960s Korea, it follows Kim San, an ambitious idealist and a recipient of an ‘Albright Scholarship.’ Driven to turn his country’s fortunes around, San crosses paths with Pak Doochill, a shady fixer who adapts quickly to any situation and together, the pair form an uneasy alliance.

The political drama will release five episodes on May 15, followed by two episodes a week until a three-part season finale on June 19.

Nine Puzzles follows two intrepid investigators who have to put aside their differences and work together after a serial killer begins playing games with police.

Disney+ has reveled the release date for its ambitious Korean political drama Uncle Samsik, starring Song Kang-ho in his TV series debut. Bolstered by successful Korean tentpoles last year like Moving and Big Bet, the streamer has ordered seven new titles to premiere in 2024, in addition to previously-announced shows including Light Shop, from Moving creator Kangfull, and Uncle Samsik, starring Parasite actor Song Kang-ho.

One of the biggest titles in the Disney+ announcement is Blood Free, which stars Ju Jihoon (Kingdom) and Han Hyojoo (Moving). It follows a former bodyguard haunted by the failures of his past. After following several leads, he finds himself recruited to protect the CEO of a controversial lab-grown meat company, who is also a survivor of the fateful attack that changed his life.

Unmasked stars Kim Hyesoo and is set in modern-day Seoul. The series follows a team of investigative journalists who are fighting for their careers after broadcasting a controversial story.

Disney+ is steadily boosting its output of high-end Korean drama. The streaming service on Monday revealed a growing slate of star-driven Korean originals for 2024, building on the momentum achieved last year with the critical and commercial popularity of hit shows like Moving and Big Bet.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has revealed a new official US trailer for the Korean meta comedy Cobweb, which initially premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year. Finally set for US release this February, also on VOD at the same time as in theaters. A new film from acclaimed Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-woon, with a meta story about a filmmaker trying to make a masterpiece and realizing how hard that really is. The story is set in Seoul in 1970 and focuses on Kim, a director who is dissatisfied with the ending of his project entitled "Cobweb". Despite obstacles and interference from censorship authorities, disgruntled actors & producers, Kim is determined to rework the ending of his film in just two days, in hopes of making it a masterpiece. The main cast includes Song Kang-ho, Park Jeong-su, Im Soo-jung, Oh Jung-se, Jeon Yeo-been, and Krystal Jung.

Bong Joon-ho, director of Oscar-winning film Parasite, stood with a group of South Korean culture and entertainment industry leaders today in Seoul, calling for a probe into police authorities’ handling of an investigation into Lee Sun-kyun, following the actor’s death last month.

They also questioned media practices in reporting on such cases and asked the government and legislators to examine and revise laws to protect the civil rights of those under investigation.

Set in Korea during the 1960s, the show follows Kim San, an ambitious idealist and Albright scholarship recipient hoping to transform his country into an industrial nation and deliver an American-level of affluence to his people.

Disney+/Hulu has been confirmed as the global home of Uncle Samsik, the South Korean drama series starring Parasite‘s Song Kang-ho.

News of the 1960s-set series first emerged last year, at which point the network or streamer behind it hadn’t been confirmed. Disney+ has confirmed that it will launch globally this year, with Hulu doing the same in the U.S.

Uncle Samsik mark the first time in Song’s decades-long career that he has starred in a drama series, and it has now been confirmed that Byun Yo-han has joined the cast. Song will play the titular character and Byun as Kim San.

Parasite‘s Song Kang-ho is set to star in Uncle Samsik, Disney+’s ambitious period drama from Korean writer-director Shin Yeon-shick.

Set in 1960s Korea, a time of great social and political upheaval, Uncle Samsik tells the story of a young idealist man who is driven to turn his country’s fortunes around. The man attracts the attention of a shady fixer, who adapts to any situation and takes whatever steps necessary to help him accomplish his boss’ goals.

Song will play the fixer Pak Doochill/Uncle Samsik, and Byun Yohan (Mr. Sunshine, Six Flying Dragons) with the idealistic Kim San.

Written and directed by Shin, the series is notable for being the filmmaker’s first television project, as well as Song’s first appearance in a drama series. The pair worked together on Shin’s volleyball drama One Win and his black comedy Cobweb, both of which were released in 2023.

Historical action drama 12.12: The Day has surpassed 12 million admissions and $90m at the South Korea box office as of today (January 2), according to the Korea Box-office Information System (Kobis).

"Monster", directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, is one of the most acclaimed movies of 2023 that you probably haven't heard of yet.

Set in Japan, the film follows three people: the single mother Saori Mugino (Sakura Andō), her young son Minato (Sōya Kurokawa), and Minato's teacher Michitoshi Hori (Eita Nagayama). Saori begins to suspect that Hori is abusing her son, while Hori suspects that there's something sinister in the boy's head. The truth, which I'll leave unspoiled, is a lot sadder. The film is told from their three perspectives. Seeing the same sequence of events three times highlights how hard it is to truly understand someone by looking at them from the outside.

Going into its third year of film programming, The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Museum has an established style: unabashedly eclectic. This winter it will showcase everything from an Oscar-friendly George Stevens Lecture with Christopher Nolan, who will present a 70th anniversary screening of classic western “Shane;” the first-ever retrospective on Korean actor Song Kang-Ho (“Parasite”); a 10th-anniversary screening of Oscar-winner “12 Years a Slave” with director Steve McQueen; a spotlight on African cinema guest programmed by Mo Abudu and co-presented with the NAACP; and a series on natural disasters in movies that kicks off with “Twister” in 35 mm.

“There are multiple histories of cinema,” said chief audience officer Amy Homma over Zoom. “And what better way to show that than with screening as many wildly diverse, broad-ranging series, genres, and decades-spanning titles as possible? Our cinematheque program is hundreds of screenings per year and we’re screening eight to 10 titles per week.

The Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents and Film Market wrapped up its 2023 edition with record attendance from over 2,479 industry representatives, according to organizers.

Despite industry-wide headwinds, attendees from sales and licensing companies, buyers, producers and investors gathered in Busan in an expanded exhibition hall at Bexco, the main venue, to trade content ranging from films and videos to such intellectual property (IP) as novels and digital comics.

“Given the slow film market globally, I think many were eager to find new business opportunities and share information about the state of the market,” said Hyung-rae Kim, the festival representative. “There were a lot of visitors from Indonesia this year. The exhibition hall was packed. Overall, it went smoothly. We’re hoping to connect with other markets in Europe next year and set up new programs.”

Hong Kong star Chow Yun-fat receives Asian Filmmaker of the Year award.

A raft of star actors and directors from across Asia helped open the 28th Busan International Film Festival tonight (October 4), led by Hong Kong film icon Chow Yun-fat.

The acclaimed star of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Killer took to the stage at the festival in South Korea to accept the honorary Asian Filmmaker of the Year award.

Speaking to a packed audience at the outdoor theatre of the Busan Cinema Center, Chow said: “It’s been exactly 50 years since I started my career as an actor.

“I hope we can communicate and reconcile again,” said Busan Mayor Park Heong-joon on the opening night of the South Korean city’s film festival.

With so much of the dialogue in opening drama “Because I Hate Korea” discussing Korean societal rigidities, group loyalties, long working hours and poor pay (which cause the protagonist to emigrate to laid-back New Zealand), it is easy to forget that many of these characteristics are what may have saved this year’s Busan International FIlm Festival from going off the rails.

Mid-year, the festival’s aging senior management had a self-inflicted meltdown (a senior moment?) when chairman and co-founder Lee Yong-kwan set off a chain of events that caused multiple resignations, highlighting the old city-versus-festival political divide and alienating local sponsors and industry guilds.
