‘The Alto Knights’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Robert De Niro, Debra Messing, Kathrine Narducci, Cosmo Jarvis, Michael Rispoli, Robert Uricola, Frank Piccirillo, Matt Servitto | Written by Nicholas Pileggi | Directed by Barry Levinson

The Alto Knights, directed by Barry Levinson, brings together a talented cast, with Robert De Niro in the spotlight, portraying dual roles. The film sets out to explore the complex world of 1950s New York mobsters, but while it has all the right ingredients for a gripping crime drama, it ultimately falls short of becoming a memorable entry in the genre.

De Niro’s dual performance as Frank Costello and Vito Genovese, two real-life mob bosses, is certainly an ambitious choice. On paper, the idea of him playing both characters sounds intriguing. However, the execution feels a bit lacklustre. The portrayal of Costello as the calm and calculating “gentleman gangster” and Genovese as the paranoid, impulsive hothead does not carry the emotional weight that...

Robert De Niro’s 70% Rotten Tomatoes Gangster Drama ‘The Alto Knights’ Sets VOD Release Date
Image
Warner Bros bet on Robert De Niro’s gangster appeal and doubled down on it with a dual role in The Alto Knights, but the audience has spoken, and the box office doesn’t look so good, nor are critics happy with this feature from veteran director Barry Levinson. While the movie had all the right talents attached, it fell short on its appeal to the fans, and De Niro’s dual role didn’t help. But there’s still hope, as the studio has released the movie on VOD.

Fans of Levinson and De Niro, who couldn’t make it to the theatres now, have the opportunity to watch the movie at the ease of their homes. Furthermore, the movie will be released on Blu-Ray on May 27 with bonus content. The movie casts De Niro as not one but two real-life figures from the world of organized crime during the mid-1900s.

‘The Alto Knights’ Review: Robert De Niro Plays Two Mafia Frenemies In One Big Misfire
Image
Inside you there are two mobsters, and Robert De Niro plays both.

There’s a scene near the limp climax of Barry Levinson’s utterly somnambulant The Alto Knights in which Vito Genovese (De Niro) argues violently with his meathead driver and muscle Vincent Gigante (Cosmo Jarvis) about whether or not Palmyra, NY is the birthplace of Mormonism. Palmyra is the birthplace, but Vito is convinced it isn’t, and he is such a hothead narcissist he nearly strangles Vincent to death. The scene goes on for an obnoxiously long time. There are “jokes” about golden books and a lot of yelling. With no apparent thematic or narrative purpose, the unending scene is an unfortunate metonym for Levinson’s entire enterprise. It is, in other words, a complete waste of time, barely aping properly the mob genre for which it is now sure to be an afterthought.

Loosely, the film...

Robert De Niro's New 2025 Crime Movie Debuts With Disappointing Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Robert De Niro has been a consistent presence in mob movies for the past five decades. One of his first Mafia movies was 1973's Mean Streets, which marked De Niro's first of several collaborations with Martin Scorsese and is considered by many to be one of the greatest gangster movies ever made. The following year, De Niro played a younger Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part II, and won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, his first of eight Oscar nominations over his illustrious career.

Over the years, De Niro has collaborated with Scorsese on many more mob movies, including Goodfellas and Casino, both of which were co-written by Nicholas Pileggi based on his nonfiction books, and frequently rank among the greatest Mafia movies ever made. Other mob movies that De Niro has starred in over the years include Sergio Leone...

'The Boys' Antony Starr's 'Banshee' Is a Streaming Success on Max
Image
Before donning a cape and becoming a paragon for supervillainy as Homelander in The Boys, once upon a time Antony Starr played a sexually irresistible criminal impersonating a sheriff in the Cinemax series Banshee. Despite the last episode of the show airing in 2016, the series has found a bump in interest on streaming as the hyper-violent crime thriller is now in the Max Top 10 TV charts.

Co-created by Jonathan Tropper - who also created Warrior and the upcoming Apple TV+ series Your Friends and Neighbors - Banshee is the story of an ex-con who assumes the identity of a deceased incoming sheriff to Banshee Pennsylvania. Under this new identity of Lucas Hood, the fake sheriff attempts to reconnect with his former lover, dodge the attacks from a powerful crime lord, all while dispensing his own brand of small-town justice. It's a wild ride with splashy action that doesn't ground itself too deeply in reality.

Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
The Alto Knights | Trailer released for Robert De Niro dual role mob drama
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Robert De Niro goes up against Robert De Niro in biographical gangster drama The Alto Knights. Here’s a trailer.

When discussing mob drama The Alto Knights, formerly known as Wiseguys, it is impossible not to think about Martin Scorsese’s seminal gangster film Goodfellas, in which Robert De Niro played the smooth talking Jimmy Conway opposite Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci. The Alto Knights reunites De Niro and screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi for a story that sees De Niro play the dual roles of quarrelling mob bosses.

It’s safe to say we’re rather excited to see this.

The Alto Knights has been a long time coming. The film was stuck in development hell for a number of decades before Warner Bros revived the project in the summer of 2022.

The synopsis reads as follows:

“The most dangerous enemy is an old friend.” This mobster thriller movie follows two of...

Robert De Niro Orders a Hit Against Himself in New Trailer for The Alto Knights: Watch
Image
In the new trailer for The Alto Knights, Robert De Niro plays two dueling crime bosses whose looks barely differ save for a prosthetic nose and glasses. Watch the clip below.

Directed by Barry Levinson, the film revolves around real-life friends turned enemies Frank Costello and Vito Genovese (both played by De Niro) as “they vie for control of the city’s streets. Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever.”

“Let’s remember something. I put you where you are today,” Genovese pontificates in the trailer. “It’s because of me.” Then, he criticizes “Mr. Good Citizen” Costello for trying to balance being a gangster and going legit: “You wanna be like them? Come on, you ain’t like them. They own this country. They’re bigger gangsters than we ever could be.

‘The Alto Knights’ Trailer: Robert De Niro Portrays Two Real-Life Mob Bosses in ‘Goodfellas’ Reunion
Image
Robert De Niro is reuniting with his “Goodfellas” screenwriter Nick Pileggi for yet another true story of the Italian-American mafia.

De Niro in the first trailer for “The Alto Knights” portrays not one but two real-life mob bosses, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, during their turf rivalry in the 1950s. “Once the best of friends, petty jealousies and a series of betrayals place them on a deadly collision course that will reshape the Mafia (and America) forever,” the official synopsis for the film reads.

“The Sopranos” and “The Wire” producer Barry Levinson (“Rain Man”) directs the film; Levinson previously collaborated with De Niro on the HBO TV movie “The Wizard of Lies” (2017) and political satire film “Wag the Dog” (1997).

10 Best Movies Like The Brutalist
Image
Brady Corbet's historical epic, The Brutalist, earned rave reviews in 2024, and recently won some key Golden Globe Awards, leaving many to wonder what kind of movie The Brutalist is, and what to watch like it. Premiering at the 81st Venice International Film Festival, The Brutalist follows László Tóth, an architect and Jewish immigrant from Hungary who moves to America, hoping to find success after the devastation of World War II. After a chance meeting with a wealthy businessman, Tóth's luck begins to change. The Brutalist is rising in popularity due to its amazing reviews, but also its shocking runtime.

There are many aspects of watching The Brutalist that make it different from an average blockbuster. First, the movie is 215 minutes long, which is more than 3 1/2 hours. Movies of that length typically boast epic stories that take place over many years, and The Brutalist is no different. Furthermore, this movie...

10 Awesome Action TV Shows With Fast-Paced Fight Scenes
Image
Many great action series feature the best TV show battle scenes, and modern fight choreography has been getting faster and more engaging than ever. Whether they're live-action or animated, these TV series utilize fight sequences that keep the audience guessing and provide plenty of dynamic movements, often making them lauded as the most successful within the action genre. However, these fights only land on the viewer and are treated as impactful parts of the story if audiences care about the characters and if the fight sequences work to drive the plot forward.

When TV battle scenes aren't accurate to real life, this can take the viewer out of the story, but this isn't the most important piece of an action series. Many audience members aren't familiar with the ins and outs of technical aspects and are most concerned with whether or not the visuals are compelling. Fight scenes don't necessarily...

Matt Servitto: The Sopranos Actor's 10 Best Movies & TV Shows Ranked
Image
Matt Servitto's most famous character is Special Agent Dwight Harris in The Sopranos, a role that still gets him stopped on the street by fans. His varied roles showcase his intelligence, range, and ability to switch between serious and comedic characters effortlessly. Servitto's memorable performances in Homeland, The Blacklist, and Banshee highlight his talent and versatility as an actor.

American actor Matt Servitto is probably best recognized as Tony's frenemy FBI Agent Dwight Harris, in The Sopranos, but the actor has had plenty of other notable roles across his career, particularly on television. Servitto's first television performance came in 1988 with a recurring role in All My Children. From this soap opera, Servitto jumped into movies and more television roles. Television is where Servitto found the most success, but his prolific list of film acting credits suggests a personal enjoyment of the medium, even if his roles have been minor in it.

25 TV Shows With the Most Nudity
Image
Shows with the most nudity are widely discussed for their raunchy content and boundary-pushing. American broadcast networks face FCC regulations on nudity, but premium networks like HBO are known for it. Popular shows like Game of Thrones and Euphoria feature graphic sex scenes and nudity, becoming less shocking over time.

The shows with the most nudity are among the most widely discussed in the history of TV, as many of them have caused a stir due to their raunchy content or pushing of boundaries. While in recent years nudity has become fairly regular on the small screen, the shows with the most nudity stand out for the notable amounts of nakedness. The first time American television audiences saw nudity in a scripted show came in 1973 with the quick shot of a male butt in M*A*S*H. By the 1980s, many shows began experimenting with female nudity, and eventually,...

‘The Jester’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: What Does The Jester Represent?

Colin Krawchuck’s The Jester lends horror flicks a different and harrowing definition. Jester chronicles a sinister entity sporting an orange suit, a black hat, and clown makeup who kills people on Halloween Eve. However, evil does give his victims a chance to save their lives. From what it appears, Jester gives them a task, probably something like reflecting on past mistakes and making amends with their families. If they succeed, voila, they live to see another day, and if they don’t, Jester will kill them in a manner only he could think of. At the beginning of The Jester, we see a middle-aged man named John Wheeler (Matt Servitto) begging forgiveness from his daughter for what he did. Unfortunately, his daughter, Emma, was in no mood to hear him out. She disconnects the call, and with that, the man’s only hope of surviving.

Stars: Matt Servitto, Michael Sheffield, Lelia Symington, Delaney White | Written by Colin Krawchuk, Michael Sheffield | Directed by Colin Krawchuk

The Jester opens as John walks alone at night. A figure in a top hat and orange suit, the Jester appears and disappears behind him.

A young girl appears in an alley and again in front of him. He calls the now grown girl, his daughter Emma who is not happy to hear from him. The Jester confronts him and as John pleads for his life conjures up a noose and, using his tie to control it, hangs him.

At his funeral, we find out he has another daughter Jocelyn (Delaney White; Pooling Evidence) who he had after walking out on Emma and her mother. The Jester also puts in an appearance much to the dismay of a pair of gravediggers.

Director Colin Krawchuk and co-writer Michael Sheffield are both making...

A Classic Tony Soprano Insult Creates An Accidental Plot Hole
Image
A classic Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini) moment where he insults an FBI agent in fluent Italian potentially creates an accidental The Sopranos plot hole. It was established during The Sopranos season 2, episode 4, "Commendatori" that Tony doesn't speak a word of Italian. This is due to the Soprano family being second or third generation Italian immigrants who settled in America, meaning that Tony and many of his fellow mobsters were raised in the USA. "Commendatori" is an episode that plays on Tony's crew's nostalgia for Italy, despite the fact they were born in America. In one memorable scene, Paulie Walnuts (Tony Sirico) orders Italian-American style spaghetti while they dine in a traditional restaurant.

Ironically, Tony Soprano actor James Gandolfini was from a family who owned land in Italy and his parents spoke fluent Italian. Talking to James Lipton on an episode of Inside the Actor's Studio broadcast in 2004, Gandolfini mentioned that...

Barry Season 4 Offers Its First Major Surprise With Fuches, Of All People
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Barry" season 4, episode 1, "yikes," and episode 2, "bestest place on the earth."

One of the most important relationships in "Barry" is between the eponymous hitman turned actor (Bill Hader) and his handler/honorary uncle, Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root). Fuches is the one who turned Barry into a hitman (he was already a killer from his military service in Afghanistan). So when Barry wants to try a new vocation and join the acting class of Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler), Fuches objects, knowing that spells the end of his gravy train. Their partnership falls apart over season 1, and they've now tried to kill each other multiple times.

Season 3 of "Barry" ended with a sense of comeuppance. After entrapment by Cousineau, Barry was finally arrested for killing Detective Janice Moss (Paula Newsome) — Cousineau's girlfriend — back in the season 1 finale. Fuches was arrested too, courtesy of Janice's father Jim...

Al Capone's Mug shot
MobMovieCon and SopranosCon to Have a Sit-Down in Atlantic City
Al Capone's Mug shot
It’s time for the punks to meet the godfathers. The creators of SopranosCon merged with MobMovieCon for a family celebration. From July 23 to July 25, Harrah’s Resort & Casino in Atlantic City will house the boardwalk’s biggest gangster gathering since Nucky Johnson hosted the mob’s Atlantic City Conference in 1929.

“Al Capone will not be coming though,” VirtualCons CEO Michael Mota tells Den of Geek. “Those were the mobsters. I would say this would be the biggest gathering of mobster wannabes.” The Sopranos fan convention has come a long way since it was dreamed up by three gangster movie aficionados from New York, Maryland, and Rhode Island. The 2019 SopranosCon drew thousands of fans from as far as The Netherlands and the United Kingdom to the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus. A planned expansion to MobMovieCon had to be pushed back because of the pandemic, but the organizers introduced VirtualCons...

Natalie Portman Rocks the Stage in Second Official Trailer for 'Vox Lux'
"Tonight... we're going to bring it back to where it all began!" Neon has debuted a second full-length trailer for Vox Lux, the highly provocative, brilliant film by American actor-turned-filmmaker Brady Corbet (his second film after The Childhood of a Leader). This premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals this year to some divisive reactions, with plenty of effusive praise. Vox Lux stars Raffey Cassidy and Natalie Portman (both) as a popstar named Celeste, profiling her rise to fame and fortune and glory. It spans 18 years, showing us her origin story and what she has become later in life. It's essentially the anti-a Star is Born movie, and it's incredibly bold in its message about how cyclical and connected everything (good & bad) in this world is. The cast includes Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle, Stacy Martin, Matt Servitto, Fred Hechinger, and Allison Winn. I saw this in Venice and loved...

Full Trailer for Brady Corbet's Film 'Vox Lox' Starring Natalie Portman
"It's a weird world we live in... And the way I've chosen to live my life goes against some people's views on things." Neon has released the full-length official trailer for Vox Lux, the highly provocative, brilliant new film by American actor-turned-filmmaker Brady Corbet (his second film after The Childhood of a Leader previously). This premiered at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals this year to some divisive reactions. It spans 18 years, showing us her origin story and what she has become later in life. It's essentially the anti-a Star is Born movie, and it's seriously bold in its poignant message about how cyclical and connected everything in this world is. First Teaser for Brady Corbet's Film 'Vox Lux' Starring Natalie Portman
"A twenty-first century portrait." Vanity Fair has released the first brief teaser trailer for a new film titled Vox Lux, the second feature made by actor Brady Corbet (who also directed The Childhood of a Leader). This is premiering at the Venice Film Festival starting this week, and it will also play at the Toronto Film Festival. Not much is known about this yet, but it stars Natalie Portman as a mega-famous popstar named Celeste. The short description explains that "an unusual set of circumstances brings unexpected success to a pop star." And supposedly the film spans 18 years, showing many major moments through her eyes. The cast includes Jude Law, Jennifer Ehle, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Matt Servitto, Fred Hechinger, and Allison Winn. There is not much to this teaser, just her walking out on stage, but I am curious to see more - I've got a good feeling. And...

Banshee (2013)
Tonight's 'Banshee' had more serial killing — and one of its best scenes ever
Banshee (2013)
A review of the penultimate Banshee — and thoughts on recent episodes of the series — coming up just as soon as my boss catches me saying something inappropriate in the workplace... "Eventually, the lie took over. I believed it. I was the sheriff. I was a cop, and I liked it. I fuckin' loved it... Somehow, it just felt right." -Hood You may recall at the start of the season, I worried that the serial killer storyline was the one thriller cliche that even this show couldn't breathe new life into. If anything, my frustration with the arc only grew over time, as it just kept moving through the same beats every one of these stories has going back at least to Silence of the Lambs — up to and including the moment where it seems like the heroes are about to move in on the killer, only they're going through another door in another place entirely.
