‘What balls!’ ‘Apollo 13’ star Kathleen Quinlan on firing off notes to Ron Howard, secret dinner with Tom Hanks, and why her Oscar-nominated role was more than just ‘the wife’
Image
First things first: yes, the ring thing really happened.

Early on in Apollo 13 — Ron Howard’s 1995 dramatization of the famous 1970 NASA space odyssey that very nearly became a space tragedy — there’s a scene that plays more like fiction than fact. On the morning of the launch that rockets Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks) into the wild blue yonder, the celebrated astronaut’s wife, Marilyn (Kathleen Quinlan), steps into a motel shower… and watches in horror as her wedding ring is washed down the drain mid-rinse.

It’s the culmination of a series of premonitions she’s had warning her that Jim’s mission isn’t going to go smoothly. And, sure enough, a few days into Apollo 13’s moon-bound trajectory Lovell radios Houston to alert them to a very serious problem aboard the unluckily numbered spacecraft.

“All that was real,” Quinlan confirms to Gold Derby ahead of...

'He Wasn't Fond of Me': Corey Feldman Says Johnny Depp Got Him Fired From 32-Year-Old Oscar-Nominated Film
Image
Former child star Corey Feldman rose to fame with his roles in popular 80s movies like Stand by Me, The Goonies, The Lost Boys, and Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter. According to the actor and musician, Feldman was also cast in a major role role for the acclaimed film What's Eating Gilbert Grape alongside Juliette Lewis and Johnny Depp.

Per People, Feldman spoke about What's Eating Gilbert Grape during a new interview with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan's The Magnificent Others podcast. Feldman said he was originally cast as Arnie Grape, a teenager with developmental disabilities who was ultimately portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. It was then alleged that after his casting, Depp went to the film's producers to request that Feldman should be dropped from the project, citing the actor's struggles with addiction.

“I was actually cast to play Leonardo DiCaprio's role," Feldman said, adding that...

Tom Hanks' Legendary $355 Million Space Drama Comes to Netflix Next Month
Image
Tom Hanks' beloved space drama Apollo 13 will arrive on Netflix this January, almost thirty years after its debut. Produced by Universal Pictures and Massive Entertainment, the film was commercially successful, grossing over $355 million against a $52 million budget.

Fans will get the chance to re-experience the glory of Apollo 13 when it hits Netflix on January 1. Directed by Ron Howard from William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert's screenplay, the 1995 docudrama film adapted astronaut Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger's 1994 book Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13, dramatizing the aborted 1970 Apollo 13 lunar mission. The movie follows Lovell and fellow astronauts Jack Swigert and Fred Haise aboard the ill-fated titular spacecraft for the United States' fifth crewed mission to the Moon. Hanks stars as Lovell opposite Kevin Bacon's Swigert and Bill Paxton's Haise. The ensemble cast includes Ed Harris, Kathleen Quinlan, and Gary Sinise.

10 Best Space Race Movies To Watch After Fly Me To The Moon

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Fly Me to the Moon.

Many movies like Fly Me to the Moon showcase different parts of the Space Race, highlighting key moments like the Apollo 11 moon landing. Apollo 13 and The Right Stuff offer more serious takes on space exploration, contrasting with Fly Me to the Moon's comedic tone. Hidden Figures sheds light on the crucial role of Black women mathematicians in the Space Race, focusing on Mary Jackson, Katherine G. Johnson, and Dorothy Vaughan

Many great movies like Fly Me to the Moon follow different parts of the Space Race, highlighting a historical moment from the 20th century. The Apple original movie is a comedic take on the marketing that sold the US public on the Apollo 11 landing and a fake NASA moon landing that never happened in Fly Me to the Moon's true story. Johnny Depp at an event for Esperando os Bárbaros (2019)
One of the downsides of living in a movie landmark with a half-mile long driveway is that obsessed fans who can’t get a satisfactory peek from the road will occasionally think nothing about rolling up to your front door. Jim Lutz and Alex Carrillo have lived in their 100-year old farmhouse in Manor, Texas, since 1977, raising five children, running a jewelry business, and occasionally lending their rustic home to a movie or television production. But the tourists who come knocking aren’t imposing on their hospitality because of Roadie, the 1980 movie starring Art Carney and Meat Loaf that filmed there.

Lone Star Cinema: What's Eating Gilbert Grape
With the Oscar nomination buzz surrounding Leonardo DiCaprio for his titular performance in J. Edgar, it's a good time to take another look at a Texas-made movie from early in DiCaprio's career, the terrific What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

Released in 1993, director Lasse Hallström's highly praised film follows the Grape family, a close-knit but intriguingly dysfunctional clan living in the fictional Iowa town of Endora (although actually shot in Central Texas). Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) spends much of his time watching over his mentally retarded younger brother, 17-year-old Arnie (DiCaprio, in an Oscar-nominated performance), while his sisters, Amy (Laura Harrington) and Ellen (Mary Kate Schellhardt) slave away in the kitchen. Ruling the roost is the siblings' widowed, depressed and morbidly obese mother, Bonnie (Darlene Cates), whose girth and mental state have prevented her from leaving the family's rural house for years.
