This September, Todd McFarlane Productions will deliver a major moment for the Spawn Universe with the release featuring two variant covers by legendary creator Frank Miller, alongside a special collaboration with Spawn creator Todd McFarlane. The issue will include Miller’s latest variant as well as a rare joint edition with McFarlane, marking their first time working together on cover art since 1994’s Wizard Magazine #32, and their first cover collaboration set within the Spawn Universe.
Miller’s last artistic contribution to Spawn came in 2000 with his cover for Spawn #100. Now, twenty-five years later, he returns with a bold new variant cover, providing both pencils and inks, finished with colors by Alex Sinclair. For the 1:25 black-and-white variant, those same Miller pencils have been re-inked by McFarlane himself, uniting two of the most influential voices in modern comics.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is well on its way to swinging into theaters, and Tom Holland has already started suiting up.
The last time we saw Spidey on the big screen, he was sharing it with his predecessors, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire. That got me thinking: who is the best Spider-Man?
All of them… or none of them? They’re all awesome in their own way.
Today, we’re going to break down each actor’s portrayal of the web-head in their respective films, and explore how Spider-Man: No Way Home re-opened the book of possibilities for future Spider-Man crossovers.
Tobey Maguire: The Godfather of the Spider-Trio
We’ll start at the beginning of Spider-Man in cinema (not counting the Japanese version) with the Godfather of the Spider-trio: Tobey Maguire.

Never judge a book by its cover -- unless it's a comic book, then please judge away. When you pick up a title from Marvel or DC Comics, the cover makes all the difference. It holds the ability to sell you the book in an instant, or it could be the equivalent of garlic to a vampire if it looks about as boring as two tree branches locked in a staring contest. The cover needs to convince you that what you're about to page through is both a must-read and must-buy experience.
Publishers understand the importance of covers, hence using different approaches like wraparound covers, foil variants, and embossed designs. While these add a visual impact and collector's appeal, it only works if the cover asserts itself as iconic. Now, the question is, how does one determine that? That's easy -- you look at its influence on pop culture and...

Ahead of the release of the first part of this year's DC and Marvel crossover series, Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1, which had a series of All-Star team-ups as backups in the issue, DC is now revealing all the All-Star backups that It will be featuring in November's Batman/Deadpool #1 (behind the lead story by Grant Morrison and Dan Mora), as well as All twenty variant covers for the epic crossover event!

Writer Grant Morrison has famously done a number of past stories that have involved metafictional elements, including the hit crossover event, Multiversity, and that continues again in this issue, which DC describes as "a reality-bending saga that’s equal parts cosmic horror, slapstick noir, and metafictional therapy session. It’s the kind of comic book that knows it’s a comic book, revels in being a comic book, weaponizes its comic bookiness—and dares you to keep reading anyway!

Doctor Strange returns with a new status quo and an unexpected new partner in a new Marvel series. After losing the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme to Doctor Doom, Strange has sought a new purpose, finding it in Asgard. In his forthcoming new series, Strange faces some horrific threats, but he does not fight alone.
Today, Marvel announced a new, ongoing Doctor Strange title to launch later this year. The book will be written by Derek Landy and drawn by Ivan Fiorelli. Marvel’s solicitation for Doctor Strange #1 reads as follows:
Stephen Strange, Stranded!
After becoming Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard, Strange lost his chance at redemption — and revenge against Doom — when Loki murdered Thor, cutting Midgard off from the other nine realms. With no way home and few allies remaining in Asgard, Strange travels to Alfheim to investigate an emerging crisis. But in an unfamiliar land, can Strange prevent elves and...

Outside of Marvel or DC, it's tough to find a more impactful comic book superhero than that of Spawn. Created by former Marvel Comics superstar Todd McFarlane, "Spawn" served as one the big launch titles for Image Comics (which McFarlane co-founded back in the early 1990s). It was a massive, genre re-defining IP, with the comic book series still going strong to this day. "Spawn" was even big enough to get a big-budget, live-action movie adaptation from New Line Cinema in 1997.
Unfortunately, the film didn't do well critically or commercially. Ever since then, McFarlane has been highly protective of the Spawn character and understandably so, even holding off on discussing a new movie until roughly 2009. Later, in 2016, McFarlane revealed he had finished a script for a new "Spawn" film. A year after, the horror maestros at Blumhouse Productions signed on to produce the project, with McFarlane slated to write and direct the "Spawn" movie himself.

There has been so much Spider-Man news lately. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the next Tom Holland-led MCU film, just started filming this month. With that came the film's first short teaser, set photos revealing Holland shooting an action sequence in his new suit, and the confirmation that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk will be making an appearance. Now, with less than a year until Brand New Day swings into theaters. McFarlane Toys has unveiled their latest Spider-Man comic figure.
A GameStop exclusive part of McFarlane's 1:10th scale posed Marvel line, this figure is based on Todd McFarlane’s cover from Spider-Man #6. This is specifically a “Line Art” version that makes the figure look like it has just been drawn. No color, just a pure comic book black-and-white illustration. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is shooting in Glasgow, Scotland, and we finally have a first look at the wall-crawler's new mask. Many fans had expressed a desire to see a design inspired by artists like Mark Bagley and Todd McFarlane, but this is 100% Steve Ditko/John Romita Sr.
With the new suit borrowing heavily from those worn by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home and their respective solo outings, it's not overly surprising that Peter #1's mask has remained largely the same (though the lenses do look larger in some shots).
While this homemade suit isn't outfitted with Stark Tech, we'd bet on those lenses still moving so that Tom Holland's web-slinger can express emotion. With a significantly bigger design, that might have been trickier to achieve in a believable way.
Whether we'll get to see characters like The Punisher and Scorpion on Spider-Man:...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps capped off a strong year for the comic book genre. Particularly for the MCU, which has been a very up-and-down shared universe the last few years. This has given fans high hopes for next year. While Avengers: Doomsday is the main course in 2026, we’ll also see the return of Tom Holland's Web-Slinger in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Now, ahead of Spider-Man’s big screen comeback, McFarlane Toys has debuted their latest set of figures based on the famous Wall-Crawler.

The Rick and Morty universe is about to expand with a new spin-off centered on one of the few people who can go toe-to-toe with Rick Sanchez — the President of the United States. During Adult Swim's San Diego Comic-Con panel for the dynamic adult animated duo, hosted by Collider's Perri Nemiroff, the network announced President Curtis, a series that will see Keith Davidreprise his fan-favorite recurring role as President Andre Curtis. Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon and executive producer James Siciliano worked together to create the project, which promises new sci-fi adventures from a different perspective. Along with the announcement came an image showing Curtis and his eccentric team of close advisors.
Viewers have gotten glimpses into President Curtis's world through his collaborations/rivalry with Rick, but his spin-off show is his chance to shine without the multiversal scientist in the room. It'll follow the Commander-in-Chief and...

It may seem hot and summery, but it’s now less than 100 days until Halloween, and Arrow Video is ushering in the season with a formidable slate of genre releases. October’s drop features a high-concept comic book adaptation, a punk-fuelled zombie cult hit, two trailblazing Asian horror anthologies, an apocalyptic Carpenter classic and a ferocious revenge thriller from the heart of 1980s New York.
Leading the pack is Spawn, newly restored in 4K and arriving in Limited Edition Uhd and Blu-ray formats. The 1997 adaptation of Todd McFarlane’s comic book casts Michael Jai White as a betrayed Black Ops assassin reborn as a hell-bound antihero. Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé and produced by the teams behind Blade and The Crow, Spawn returns with both its Theatrical and Director’s Cuts, alongside new interviews, featurettes and collector’s packaging.
Dan O’Bannon’s cult classic The Return of the Living Dead also receives the 4K treatment.

Superman has been reminding moviegoers of DC’s greatness in theaters. The film is closing in on the $500 million mark at the box office and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Even when you leave the theater, you’ll most likely see a ton of Superman merchandise on store shelves, including action figures from McFarlane Toys. Now, despite Zack Snyder's DCEUbeing a relic of the past, McFarlane could be making more figures for the director’s infamous DC trilogy.
McFarlane Toys Store has just unveiled their fourth crowdfunding campaign for their Club Drawing Board. The concept figures include a 20-inch-long Batmobile from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, parts for the Justice League version of the famous car, Ben Affleck's Batman and the Batsignal, and the “Justice Is Gray” black-and-white seven-inch-scale DC Multiverse figures for Batman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and Henry Cavill's Superman.

Marvel has revealed the variant covers for Deadpool/Batman, which goes on sale in November.
As you can see in the link above, one of the variant covers clearly parodies Todd McFarlane’s famous cover of The Incredible Hulk No. 340, which showed a snarling Wolverine with the Hulk’s reflection in his claws, but this time, we see a furious Batman with the reflection of Deadpool in his Batarangs. The excellent cover was drawn by Greg Capullo, and it will certainly be a fine addition to your collection.
Another one of the other variant covers, which was drawn by Skottie Young, shows a humorous encounter between Batman and Deadpool on the rooftops above Gotham City, while Mark Bagley provided a foil variant cover showing Batman and Deadpool racing towards the Joker in order to quash whatever evil scheme the Clown Prince of Crime has planned. Marvel’s version of the iconic DC Comics hero Batmanhas been hotly debated by fans for decades now, but as the publishers team up for a universe-shattering crossover, they may have officially confirmed that Bruce Wayne is DC’s Wolverine. For the big two comics companies’ first crossover in many years, Marvel is giving Batman the Deadpool & Wolverine treatment, replacing Logan.
Marvel and DC's latest crossover kicks off later this year, with Marvel/DC: Deadpool/Batman #1 published by Marvel Comics in September, followed by DC’s Batman/Deadpool #1 in November.

Dwayne Johnson made his mark in the Dceu with his titular role in 2022's Black Adam. Naturally, the superhero movie's marketing came with a plethora of merchandise, and that incudles action figures for Johnson's Black Adam.
Per Popverse, McFarlane Toys boss Todd McFarlane recently commented on the feedback Johnson gave when the company developed an official Black Adam action figure. Johnson, who rose to fame as one of pro wrestling history's most popular superstars, wanted the figure to appear more muscular. At that point, McFarlane said he realized "The Rock" was completely right, and he had no problem making the changes to the figure's design.
As McFarlane explained, "Recently, we had to get approval on Black Adam, and Dwayne Johnson's only comment was — which I think he was right — was, 'Can you make me more ripped?' It actually seems like a silly one, but it actually was right,...

The process of making action figures is not an easy one. It's not just about digitally sculpting a character, throwing it in the development pipeline and watching a factory machine spit out a brand-new collectible to play with. It's a much more complicated process that involves careful planning, licensor's approval and, if you're adapting the likeness of an actor, actors' approval as well. Now, 2022's Black Adam has given us an inside look at the painstaking process behind creating the toys we know and love.
Todd McFarlane sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Popverse (link to the full interview is here). This past weekend, after a long battle with ill health, we lost Peter David. So, as he pulls his chair up to the great writing desk in the heavenly bullpen, we look back at the career of one of comics’ most prolific and creative writers.
David’s career in comics began via the journalism route after graduating from New York University with a degree in journalism. After finding this a tough egg to crack, he decided to pursue a career in fiction. Still, it was a long journey from making this decision. Following on from some smaller publishing jobs, he served five years in Marvel’s sales department. At the time, Christopher Priest was editor of Spectacular Spider-Man and bought a script off David, being impressed by his ‘maverick’ like quality. That story was ‘The Death of Jean DeWolff’ What followed is a little grey, a rumblings of conflict of interests,...

Robert Kirkman is definitely one of the superstar writers in modern American comics. He broke out writing at the publisher Image Comics, thanks to his superhero book "Invincible" and his zombie apocalypse comic "The Walking Dead."
Both "Invincible" and "The Walking Dead" are some of the biggest and most successful comics that exist outside the Marvel/DC duopoly. They're not just popular among comic fans, they've broken into the mainstream with popular TV adaptations too. "The Walking Dead" TV series is AMC's golden goose (just look at all the spin-offs) and "Invincible" has been adapted into a cartoon on Prime Video. ("Invincible" season 4 and more are on the way.)
Kirkman co-creating "Invincible" and "The Walking Dead" is already an achievement. You know what makes it even more impressive? That he wrote both series for about 15 years — and not just any 15 years,...

Cody Ziglar’s run of Deadpool has continued to make Wade Wilson a fun character while making his daughter, Ellie, an upcoming star. Now he’s writing Wolverines (Logan and Laura) with them? Simply, shut up and take my money!
The best part is that this won’t just be action.

Sam Raimi’s Craziest Attempt With Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Trilogy That No Stuntman Could Pull Off

Tobey Maguire’s rendition of Marvel’s larger-than-life superhero, Spider-Man, has a cult following, even 23 years after the release of its first installment. Directed by Sam Raimi, the Spider-Man Trilogy stood out for its aesthetics, interesting narratives, and realistic fight choreography.
While the recent iteration of the web-slinging bad boy, delivered by Tom Holland, banked by Marvel, relied heavily on CGI and visual add-ons, Raimi’s artistry was based on realism. So much so that the 65-year-old filmmaker even tried to hire people to replicate the superhero’s iconic daring comic poses!
The Fascinating Tale Behind Sam Raimi-Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man
Everyone has an opinion on which iteration of Peter Parker’s crime-fighting alter ego – Spider-Man- is the best to ever swing onto the big screen. Young fans might go for Holland’s version, but the first depiction to bring one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic superheroes into the cinematic mainstream was Maguire’s portrayal.

Comic book legend Todd McFarlane recently shared his own top choice for which actor should play Batman in James Gunn's DC Universe. A movie starring The Dark Knight, The Brave and the Bold, is currently in development.
Speaking with ScreenRant, McFarlane said his top choice for Batman is Star Trek actor Zachary Quinto. "I'm not great at Hollywood names, but there's an actor I like. He might be too old, but he was Spock in the Star Trek movies, and he was in Margin Call. [Zachary Quinto], that's the name," McFarlane said. "I've seen him in shows where he can be somber — and I'm not talking Spock somber — I'm talking about how there's a seriousness to a lot of characters he's done. I think Batman needs that personality because Batman, to me, is a guy that's so focused."

In the last 85-plus years, Batman has seen countless iterations. Whether it's found on the comic book page, in a film or a TV series, everyone has their preferred Batman as well as the style in which The Caped Crusader operates. A part of McFarlane's DC Multiverse seven-inch scale Collector Edition sub-series, their latest Batman figure (Collector Edition #34) is based on the four-part 1987 Detective Comics story “Batman: Year 2.” One of the artists on that comic was Todd McFarlane, and this Batman looks to be recreating his signature exaggerated style. Fans of Fortnite who are hoping to see the iconic comic book character Spawn in the game might soon get some good news. Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, recently hinted that it could be time for him to push for a Spawn skin in Fortnite.
Since his debut in the 1990s, Spawn has gained a large following through comics, an animated show, and a 1997 live-action movie. Recently, McFarlane shared that he had actually approached Epic Games, the creators of Fortnite, about bringing Spawn into the game before. “Maybe it’s time for me to pick up the phone,” McFarlane said in a recent interview at Megacon Orlando.
He explained that, during his earlier talks with Epic Games, the team was already in the middle of launching big collaborations with Marvel and DC, so they didn’t prioritize Spawn. McFarlane shared, “I had that conversation with them because I was making toys.

Some see Marvel Comics' heyday as either the Silver Age of Comics or the 1980s, with the latter being an era where almost every major character and franchise had great ongoing titles. The 1990s were a much more infamous decade, both for Marvel and comic books as a whole. Grim and gritty were in, and this saw several characters in the Marvel Universe hit it bigger than others.
The 1990s catapulted several Marvel heroes and antiheroes into stardom, be they X-Ceptional mutants or symbiotic Lethal Protectors. This time period defined Marvel's X-Men in particular, and they had just the right amount of edge for the era. The same was true for various vigilantes and antiheroes, who shined brighter than ever in the Dark Ages of Comics.

Recently, I finally got around to seeing Venom: The Last Dance. I never saw the movie when it came out in theaters because I had very little faith in the franchise after Venom: Let There Be Carnage, one of my least favorite comic book movies to come out in the era of comic books movies. Unfortunately, I paid a steep and overpriced four dollars to rent Venom: The Last Dance right before it came on Netflix. The movie was not worth the time or four whole dollars I spent on it. I genuinely would have rather stared at my reflection in the TV.
I know, my opinion about the movie is very strong. I do understand why some people like it. Action comedy is a very popular genre, but it very infrequently hits the spot for me especially when it's limited by the PG-13 rating. There are definitely some I like,...

If there is one thing guaranteed to kill off many fan dreams, then Hollywood’s obsession with money and copyrights is top of the list. This is something that Venom creator Todd McFarlane touched on while addressing how he would love to see Venom enter the MCU and face off with Spider-Man. While the Marvel characters did come together in Tobey Maguire’s third Spider-Man movie, the film was generally considered a bit of a mess, and it certainly didn’t allow Venom to live up to his full potential.

Many fans wonder if popular Spider-Man villain Venom may appear in theaters again, and his designer has some thoughts on the matter.
Todd McFarlane is the former Marvel Comics designer of Venom's first full appearance and founder of Image Comics and McFarlane Toys. Since Venom's inception on the page, the anti-hero has become an instantly recognizable superhero antagonist. He was first adapted on screen by Topher Grace in 2007's Spider-Man 3 and again in a trilogy of films that ran from 2018 to 2024 by Tom Hardy.
Todd McFarlane spoke with The Direct's Pamela Gores during his guest appearance at Megacon Orlando 2025 about his thoughts on Venom's current movie predicament and another impressive IP at Image Comics: Invincible.

The DC comics have spawned so many great stories and characters, and some of them got the chance to be adapted on the big and small screen. Zack Snyder was among the first filmmakers to tackle several projects in the DC Extended Universe but, as his time with the studio was done, James Gunn will take over the characters in the upcoming DC Universe.
The conversation about whose universe was better is inevitable, as Snyder has a series of devoted fans set to praise him, while Gunn has yet to impress since he's at the beginning of his long journey. However, over the years, the two filmmakers have often praised each other's work. Now, Gunn has proven the two are close in real life, as well, with a photo on Threads that's going viral on social media.

Venom: The Last Dancebrings Eddie Brock's story to a dramatic conclusion, with the 2024 Sony hit now set to be released on streaming. It seems as though nearly every iconic comic book hero has taken a trip on the Fortnite Battle Bus except this one.

Todd McFarlane, who rose to fame after drawing for both Marvel and DC, brought his creation to life through his self-found publisher, Image Comics. pawn creator Todd McFarlane recently shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated fight between Spawn and Ghost Rider in the popular online series.
Spawn has been gaining popularity again in recent years. While the character has always had a presence in comics, his appearance in Mortal Kombat 11 and the upcoming King Spawn movie have put him back in the spotlight. So, when Death Battle announced a Spawn vs. Ghost Rider matchup, fans went wild debating who would win.
During an interview with Heroic Hollywood at Megacon in Orlando, McFarlane made it clear who he thinks will win.
“Spawn wins. Spawn beats Superman. Oddly, if you’ve been paying attention, and you’ve seen what he’s done in the last 30 years, if people wish to combine all of that at one moment, I don’t think there’s any other character that can say they have the power that he has.

The comic book origins of Venom are storied and dramatic. The legend goes that a Marvel Comics fan named Randy Schueller wrote a letter to the company in 1982, suggesting that Spider-Man's costume be changed from the classic red-and-blue color scheme to a more minimalist black-and-white outfit. Marvel liked the enclosed design and paid him $220 for the idea. Spider-Man was in the black outfit for a few years thereafter.
Later on, John Byrne stated that the black outfit was not made of cloth. Instead, it was composed of a partially biological alien material, itself a conceit invented to cover the fact that the costume would be ripped in one panel only to show up miraculously repaired in the next.
Later still, it was established that the biological costume was a sentient alien entity made of liquid that had mentally bonded with Spider-Man, making it a symbiote. After wrestling with the alien entity in his brain,...

Venom: The Last Dance took the last bow as the most successful Sony's Spider-Man Universe title in October 2024. After several months following its release in theaters, Venom: The Last Dance is heading to streaming.

Today, Spider-Man 3 is remembered as a by-product of one of the greatest memes in pop culture history whereas for one of its leading stars, Topher Grace, the film is one of the greatest Spider-Man movies ever made. Sam Raimi’s final entry in his iconic trilogy did not stand the test of time but the same sentiment does not echo with the film’s leading antagonist.

Spider-Man 3 made Topher Grace stand out, becoming his first big movie role where he was offered a leading part as much as the first Spider-Man elevated Tobey Maguire in the industry. But Grace’s popularity was never able to rival that of Maguire’s and ultimately, the actor’s rendition of Venom was bulldozed by Tom Hardy’s beloved trilogy.
Even so, Topher Grace has no regrets for one of his career’s worst movie roles.

Venom: The Last Dance undoubtedly marked the end of an era for Tom Hardy’s franchise, leaving fans with a sense of emptiness. Because, over the years audiences had grown attached to Eddie Brock and his chaotic yet oddly charming symbiote, making it difficult to say goodbye. But while casual moviegoers had embraced this version of Venom, there was a bit of disappointment among comic book fanatics.

For those who had followed Venom’s origins in Marvel Comics, the character on screen felt like a watered-down version of the monstrous, menacing force that made Spider-Man’s life a living hell. Even the legendary artist and co-creator of Venom, Todd McFarlane noted that Sony’s version was a major deviation done to fit Hollywood’s obsession with making every anti-hero “likable.”

Despite negative reviews, Venom was a hit in 2018. Grossing $856 million at the worldwide box office on a reported $116 million production budget, the movie's success continued when it hit physical media (it's said to have earned $70.7 million in DVD and Blu-ray sales).
Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance weren't quite as successful - earning $501.5 million and $474.5 million, respectively - but Sony Pictures has still made a lot of money from the Lethal Protector.
Todd McFarlane and David Michelinie co-created the iconic villain who has little in common with Tom Hardy's interpretation of Eddie Brock. Talking to Cbr, McFarlane shared his thoughts on how Venom has been translated to screen and his evolution from bad guy to anti-hero.
"Well, I didn't have, I didn't have any input into any other and again, it doesn't bug me, right? Like I understand what the rules are. So they did their movie.

The live-action comic book film industry has been a somewhat ubiquitous presence in our world for the past two decades. And while that experience was a unifying and entertaining one for the first few years, it has snowballed into an unwanted imposition in our daily lives for the past half a decade or so. To the benefit of Kevin Feige, the Marvel chief architect seems to be aware of it.

The universally preferred term – Superhero fatigue – has now become a malicious illness festering and spreading rapidly through the DC and Marvel communities. Wicked, The Substance and Emilia Pérez snagged an impressive three wins each at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards on Friday -- but none was able to claim the top award of the night. It was Sean Baker's surprise indie hit Anora that secured the Best Picture award.
Anora managed to defeat The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, The Substance and Wicked for Best Picture -- making it a surprise winner in easily the most competitive category of the night. The comedy/drama film follows the relationship of Anora (Mikey Madison), who is a sex worker, and Vanya (Mark Eydelshteyn), the son of a wealthy Russian oligarch.
