Freshman drama Promised Land will not return for a second season. ABC has canceled the Latinx family drama after a short one-season run.
The news is not surprising. Promised Land, which premiered in January, ranked as ABC’s least watched and lowest-rated scripted series this season and was pulled from the schedule by the network after five episodes, with the remainder of its 10-episode first season released exclusively on Hulu. Promised Land‘s premiere earned a 0.2 demo rating and 1.86 million viewers in Live+Same Day, and the series never found wide audience despite scoring with critics (100 on Rotten Tomatoes).

The ABC dramas “Queens” and “Promised Land” have both been canceled after one season at ABC.
“Queens” concluded its season on the broadcaster back in February. The series followed four women in their 40s who reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had in the ‘90s when they were legends in the hip-hop world.
Eve originally starred in the series as Brianna (aka Professor Sex), but she bowed out of the show midway through the season to go on maternity leave. It also starred Naturi Naughton as Jill aka Da Thrill, Nadine Velazquez as Valeria aka Butter Pecan, Taylor Sele as Eric Jones, Pepi Sonuga as Lil Muffin, and Brandy as Naomi aka Xplicit Lyrics.
Zahir McGhee wrote “Queens” and served as an executive producer. Tim Story executive produced and directed the pilot. Sabrina Wind also executive produced. Swizz Beatz served as executive music producer.

The seemingly endless — but in actuality seven-week-long — Television Critics Association press tour finally concluded on Wednesday after a dizzying number of sessions. Once again virtual due to the pandemic, the press tour was so long that a new show hyped by ABC one week into the tour had already been pulled from its lineup by the time TCA ended.
The virtual tour was also marked by greater-than-usual access to executives, and had its share of technical glitches along with bittersweet goodbyes. Here, Variety breaks down some of the highs and lows of the tour.
Exec Sessions: Less Filling
Heading into TCA, journalists were pleasantly surprised to see more executive sessions on the schedule, since they allow media to pursue topics that network heads may not otherwise want to discuss. That kind of verbal sparring used to take place in a scrum following sessions, when reporters would approach execs with questions.

The new ABC drama “Promised Land” is moving over to Hulu.
The drama series premiered on the broadcast network on Jan. 24. Beginning March 1, it will move to the streaming service for the final five episodes of Season 1. The show has been far from a ratings breakout during its initial episodes. Season to date in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings, it is averaging just a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers per episode.
“‘Promised Land’ is a beautifully executed and tremendously entertaining series of which everyone at our company is extremely proud,” ABC said in a statement. “We know it has a passionate audience that is very invested in this show, and those viewers will be able to stream all subsequent episodes exclusively on Hulu every Tuesday for the rest of the season.”
As a result of the scheduling change, medical drama “The Good Doctor” will return earlier than expected for its midseason premiere.

ABC likes to have a sudsy primetime soap on its midseason roster, and Promised Land looks like a winner.
In the past, we've had one-and-done but highly watchable shows like Grand Hotel and The Baker and the Beauty, so we're hoping Promised Land stands the test of time.
The series is an epic, generation-spanning drama about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley.
The first trailer dropped at the network's panel during the Winter TCA tour, and there was another big announcement regarding the series:
The first two episodes will be available on Hulu the day after the series premiere on ABC, marking the first time ABC programming will be released on Hulu before debuting on the network.
The series premieres Monday, Jan. 24 (10:01-11:00 p.m. Est), on ABC, out of The Bachelor.
Will Promised Land and The Bachelor be a match made in TV heaven?...

Amazon on Thursday revealed the next four films to be released next year as part of its “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series. The first four genre movies in the collection launched on Prime Video this month.
Just like the first four films of the program, the next group represents four unique stories that are connected by common themes, including institutional horrors and personal phobias. The “social thrillers,” as Amazon terms them, are helmed by up-and-coming directors.

The long-gestating third season of the “Scream” series is finally debuting–but not on its original network.
Variety has confirmed that the series will air on VH1 instead of MTV as originally planned. “Scream” will debut on VH1 on July 8 and air two one-hour episodes back-to-back for three straight nights.
The third season of the series based on the horror movie franchise of the same name was first announced in 2016. Since then, both VH1 and MTV have largely moved away from scripted programming.
This marks the latest instance of Viacom shuffling properties around its cable portfolio. Most recently it was announced that Tracy Oliver’s “First Wives Club” series would find its fourth home on the upcoming streaming service Bet+ after having previously been set up at TV Land, Paramount Network, and Bet.
Season 3 revolves around Deion Elliot (Rj Cyler), a local star running back whose tragic past comes back...

Scream Season 3 is finally arriving... except as an event series on VH1, rather than former home MTV.
Scream Season 3 if actually going to make air!
Fans of the TV series adaptation for the meta-minded bellwether horror movie franchise have waited nearly three years since the second season on MTV capped off its summer 2016 run with an October-airing Halloween special that year. However, after a leadership shakeup at MTV, subsequent plans called for the show going the reboot route for Season 3; a rarity for non-anthology shows.
Unfortunately, upon completion, the third season of Scream languished in TV series purgatory, leaving the series as an unaired anachronism from an already-bygone era of Teen Wolf – and MTV’s overall experiment with scripted television – before the channel retreated to its reality show safety blanket by rebooting The Hills and whatnot. However, plans to finally broadcast Scream Season 3 are now confirmed. Repacked as Scream: Resurrection,...

Filmmaker tandem Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland know a thing or two about being on opposite ends of luck. It wasn’t for a lack of trying, but after breaking out with Quinceañera at Sundance back in 2006 (it got picked up by Spc and generated good box-office numbers), the pair had difficulties setting up their sophomore feature. They got their groove back when they dug into Hollywood folklore and sifted thru silver screen legend Errol Flynn‘s timeline – the lucky actor who hit jackpot and had a life that mimicked the notion of rags to riches to rags. An example of a film that might have got lost in the abyss of films presented at Tiff last September, but that might nudge out an afterlife theatrically, The Wrap reports that Samuel Goldwyn Films have picked up The Last of Robin Hood. A fall release is expected.
