When "Top Gun: Maverick" was first announced, few thought that a legacy sequel to the original Tony Scott-directed classic could possibly be a good idea. While many of a certain age fell for the 1986 film in a big way when it first released, those who only came to "Top Gun" in preparation for the sequel quickly discovered that it was ... well, let's diplomatically call it "a product of its time." From the soundtrack riddled with gloriously '80s needle drops to the Cold War backdrop to the way the film was shot and edited, it was hard to imagine how a follow-up could possibly modernize the story of Maverick (Tom Cruise) and tell a relevant story to a whole new generation today.
Well, the Joseph Kosinski sequel proved everyone wrong when it came out earlier this year, instantly becoming a box office hit across all demographics and proving that...

Making a massive action film like "Top Gun: Maverick" requires a meticulous amount of planning and attention to detail. One of the reasons that the blockbuster legacy sequel works so well is the commitment to not have an overreliance on the intrusive digital effects and CGI that dominate most of the big-budget landscape. That choice was decided well before one frame of film was shot, thanks to Tom Cruise's dedication to aviation and the entire field of stunt work over the past 40 years.
When Tony Scott's original "Top Gun" barreled its way into cinemas in 1986, practical effects were still king and audiences connected more with everyday heroes instead of caped crusaders. Scott's trademark visual style and the real-world flying captured by cinematographer Jeffrey Kimball helped wow audiences that had really never seen anything that eye-popping combined with the undeniable star power and magnetism of Cruise.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

The untitled “Goonies” reenactment pilot and “Blood Relative” are no longer moving ahead at Fox, Variety has learned.
The two projects were holdovers from Fox’s 2020 pilot season that were delayed in shooting due to the pandemic. The decision to ax “Blood Relative” comes as something of a surprise, given that it starred Oscar winner Melissa Leo in the lead role. The move also comes as Fox has given out two series orders from its drama pilot slate already: one for “The Cleaning Lady” starring Elodie Yung and another for the dance drama “The Big Leap.”
Fox has also ordered an animated comedy set in ancient Greece from Dan Harmon, the drama “Our Kind of People” from Karin Gist and Lee Daniels, and the mockumentary series “This County.”

Melissa Leo has been set as the lead of Fox’s crime drama pilot “Blood Relative.”
The project from Chris Levinson and Liza Chasin is based on James Renner’s article “Beyond the Jungle of Bad: The True Story of Two Women from California Who Are Solving All the Mysteries” and follows Louise Kelly (Leo), an expert in genetic genealogy.
Here’s the official description for the Academy Award winner’s character:
Lou Kelly is… difficult. With an Iq in the 190s, Lou wrote the book on genetic genealogy and can trace anyone if she has a viable tissue sample to play with – John and Jane Does, errant husbands, long-lost children, murderers in hiding, anyone with a secret life. But Lou has a habit of burning bridges as she goes. Sarcastic, sardonic, irritable and confrontational, she’s the smartest person in the room with no time to explain her methods to average folks.

Brian Cox is in demand at NBC.
The Emmy winner has been tapped to co-star opposite Katee Sackhoff on the network's Dick Wolf-produced drama pilot "Lost and Found" and has landed a major four-episode arc on the midseason drama series "Kings."
The hourlong "Found," from Wolf Films and Ums, centers on Tessa (Katee Sackhoff), an offbeat Lapd detective who, after butting heads with the higher-ups, is sent as a punishment to the basement to work on John Doe and Jane Doe cases.
Cox will play Tessa's fractious partner Burt Macey, a foul-mouthed, racist dinosaur of a cop who does things the old-fashioned way: with blunt force and bigoted rants.
"Found" is exec produced by writer Chris Levinson, Wolf, Nena Rodrigue and Peter Jankowski.

Katee Sackhoff will star in a new series created by Chris Levinson, Lost and Found for NBC according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Battlestar Galactica star had originally been contracted with Universal Studios and NBC to become a regular on The Bionic Woman should that series make it to a second season. Instead, it was a ratings and writers’ strike casualty, freeing her for other work including a stint on the next season of Nip/Tuck.
Once she completes her work on the BSG telefilm, now shooting in Vancouver, she will go to work on the Dick Wolf production which will cast her as an Lapd detective who is punished for clashes with authority and sent to work on John and Jane Doe cases.
Levinson developed the show for the 2006-07 development season finally received a cast-contingent order from the network last month. Sackhoff’s casting moves the show to a guaranteed pilot.

It is a project that has lived up to its name: "Lost and Found."
A year and a half ago, Chris Levinson penned the one-hour script for NBC. The network's old regime passed on it, and the project was lost in the shuffle until it recently was resurrected and ordered as a cast-contingent pilot.
"Lost and Found," from Wolf Films and Universal Media Studios, centers on Tessa, a quirky, offbeat female Lapd detective who, after butting heads with the higher-ups, is sent as a punishment to the basement to work on John Doe and Jane Doe cases.
"There are exposed pipes, it's grimy and dingy and can't be further from the glossy 'CSI' shows," Levinson said.
She originally was approached with the idea for a crime drama about cases involving unidentified victims by Wolf Films' Nena Rodrigue.
Levinson, at the time a co-exec producer on Wolf's "Law & Order," said she was not interested in developing a procedural for a marketplace saturated by the genre.
But then she found a way to crack the idea by adding a twisted sense of humor and making the show an homage to the 1980s crime series that influenced her as a kid and to her dad, TV writer-producer Richard Levinson.
Endeavor-repped Chris Levinson is exec producing "Lost and Found" with Wolf, Rodrigue and Peter Jankowski.
