There are many things that Indian cinema does right, but the fantasy genre isn’t something we excel at. But V.I. Anand’s Bhairavakottai certainly could be a game changer and an inspiration for filmmakers trying to pull this genre off. The director takes inspiration from Garuda Purana and throws in his own twist to create a fictitious village where souls filled with rage and vengeance come back to this prison in their afterlife. Anand’s fictional world is as good as it can be, and the filmmaker deserves applause for materializing this idea on the big screen. Despite the dodgy VFX, Anand’s story is so powerful that you don’t really mind the poor visuals from time to time.

The actress was paired opposite Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda in the film which was helmed by Parasuram. The song ‘Inkem Inkem Kavale’ from the film was a chartbuster.

ListicleOf the many interesting women characters of south Indian cinema who graced our screens this year, here are our favourites.Sowmya RajendranThe year 2022 was when cinema bounced back to some semblance of what it used to be before the pandemic struck the world. There were many blockbusters from the south Indian film industries, and quite a few of them had interesting women characters as well. This was a welcome change in a male-dominated field, where most films are hero-centric and mass entertainers have seldom had memorable women characters. Quite a few small budget films this year too had impressive women characters, who broke onscreen conventions and surprised us. Here are our favourite women characters from southern cinema this year: Gargi from Gargi (Tamil) Gautham Ramachandran’s hard-hitting courtroom drama is about a young woman whose father is accused of sexually assaulting a minor. And in Kerala, travel and booze are integral to this. But never did I imagine that “Ozhivudivasathe kali” (English translation – An off-day game) could encapsulate what Kerala is, so elegantly unlike any other.

Flix FlashbackUnlike the average murder mystery where the question is who did it, the puzzle in 'Drishyam' is how did he do it. Sowmya RajendranMainstream cinema, a medium for popular culture, is often looked down upon by intellectuals who consider it to be a lowly art. But for George Kutty of Drishyam, brilliantly played by Mohanlal, cinema is his teacher. From the scores of films, language no bar, that he has greedily digested, George Kutty learns everything about life — from romance and sleaze to psychology, forensics and police procedure. It seems to be a wasteful hobby, especially to his wife Rani (Meena), who never loses an opportunity to remind him that he's studied only up to fourth standard. But when George Kutty's family comes under siege unexpectedly, it is cinema which becomes their greatest weapon. Jeethu Joseph's 2013 film opens with a languid bus ride as the credits roll.

Sowmya RajendranThe ‘90s were a period of college romances in Tamil cinema. The big stars of the current generation – Vijay, Ajith, Suriya and Vikram – all debuted in various years of this decade. The stories revolved around misunderstandings between the hero and the heroine, familial opposition to their love and other circumstances that separated them. MollywoodThese women actors don't have a lengthy filmography, but their short body of work is impressive.Sowmya RajendranAnna Ben's Kappela, which recently released on Netflix, has generated quite a lot of discussion on social media. Is it a cautionary moral story for women who seek out romance without their family's knowledge? Or is it a story about second chances and an empowering film about a woman who makes a mistake but isn't castigated for her "sin"? Even as the film's politics is being debated, it's interesting to note that the actor who has carried it on her shoulders is only three films old. 21-year-old Anna Ben, with her curly hair and bright, open smile is an actor to watch out for. Anna made her debut in Kumbalangi Nights in 2019. The critically acclaimed film, directed by debut director Madhu C Narayanan, had several stars in the cast, including Fahadh Faasil and Soubin Shahir.

SandalwoodDirector Vijayanagendra gives us an absolute entertainer in his debut attempt, with Ganesh and other lead actors shining in their roles.Aravind ShwethaWith the ‘one nation one language’ pitch making headlines across the nation recently, Geetha could not have found a better release date. With the Gokak agitation – a successful language rights agitation in the 1980s that fought for the first-language status of Kannada – as the backdrop, this trademark Ganesh love story makes for an absolute entertainer, that is if you can ignore the slow screenplay. It was surprising to learn that in the last 35 years, nobody took the initiative to make a movie on the biggest Kannada language-related agitation that took place in Karnataka in 1982. There are a few short films, but a movement of this scale deserves a full-length movie. Akash (Ganesh), a software engineer, is raised by a single parent, Shankar (Devraj). He craves love and affection from both parents,...

Gender and SexualityIn films, divorce is seldom seen as a valid option and women, especially, are required to stick through a marriage however toxic it might be. CrisSindhu tries to avoid speaking to anyone at her new coaching class. A question or two later, they may find out that she is divorced and she hates to think of what’d follow. Jinu, another divorcee, hides her status, fretting over what would happen if people knew. Sindhu and Jinu* both live in Kerala, where divorce, like most other parts of the country, is frowned upon. Divorce is not easy – not just because of the hurt it may cause, but also because of the many judgments and unsolicited advice that would follow. Not surprisingly, popular culture also reflects the social discomfort with the legal procedure. Malayalam movies have mostly been unkind to women characters who choose divorce. Even men, in the rare...

MollywoodWhile Sajeev Pazhoor’s script is sweet and engaging, director G Prajith’s treatment lacks effect.CrisThe same man wrote the stories of both Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum and Sathyam Paranja Viswasikkuvo. That of course does not mean you expect a similar story or subject, it also doesn’t mean you get the same kind of kick from both. That’s where you see the difference that a director brings. G Prajith’s treatment of Sajeev Pazhoor’s new script has no parallels to be drawn to Dileesh Pothen’s Thondimuthalum from two years ago that won the writer a state award. Sathyam Paranja Viswasikkuvo has a simple story, an incident in the lives of a few construction workers being at the centre of it. It is sweet that way, the small exchanges between a group of workers making a good part of the script before the said incident invites itself into their midst.

MollywoodSamvrutha is making a comeback to Malayalam cinema after acting in 'Ayalum Njanum Thammil' seven years ago.CrisSamvrutha Sunil / Photo: Ben JosephGoing by the tone of her voice, Samvrutha Sunil has not changed much in the last seven years. It’s been that long since Ayalum Njanum Thammil, a movie in which she acted opposite Prithviraj, and left the sets on that final day of shooting, happily, contently, badly wanting a break from acting. And then, on a call from Kerala to the United States, Samvrutha listened to the story of a new film, and said yes, she would do it. She would be the village woman, the lower middle-class wife and mother, playing a really down-to-earth character called Geetha, for Sathyam Paranja Viswasikkuvo. “When I heard about Geetha, I felt she represents a lot of homemakers in Kerala. I was very happy to choose such a character for my comeback.

KollywoodJyothika's Geetha Rani is a refreshing character but the film does not rise above the predictable one-line story of a teacher turning a school around.Anjana ShekarAs Geetha Rani enters the government school in R Pudur, the camera carefully trains our eyes on all that’s wrong with the place. Broken compound walls, children lazing around on the grounds while it’s clearly school hours, some buying cigarettes from a snacks stall, broken gates, broken roofs, teachers who read magazines inside the staff room… you get the drift. Jyothika’s introduction comes as a surprise to many in the film but not so for the audience - who else but the Hm can land at a school and examine it so critically? Quite a few Tamil films have been made to criticise the country’s education system, Samuthirakani’s Saatai for example. Raatchasi, as promised by its trailer, is clearly one such endeavour.

KollywoodThe film looks like a high end version of Rj Balaji's 'Lkg'.Sowmya RajendranWe're just done with the Lok Sabha elections but Kollywood still has a lot to say on politics, politicians, corporate companies, voters, freebies and every other associated topic that we've seen on screen in recent years. The only novelty here is that it comes from Selvaraghavan, a director who is known to reinvent and give us stories that are pretty intense, whether the politics of his narratives appeals to you or not. Ngk, however, feels like the high end version of Rj Balaji's Lkg, which released a few months ago and had a successful run at the box-office. Kumaran (Suriya), like every other Tamil hero worth his salt, is a young man who gets into politics to change the system. What was his previous career, you ask? An M Tech guy turned organic farmer.
