After 25 years, every generation of Reefer Madness: The Musical gathered this week in Hollywood to celebrate the show’s milestone anniversary and a new age of cannabis.
During Tuesday’s Reefer Madness Legacy Concert in Hollywood, the cast and creators of the cult stage musical performed some beloved songs from the show, as well as some cut numbers, and revealed some hilarious behind-the-scenes secrets.
According to Og director Andy Fickman, who served as the evening’s emcee, Mary Lane star Kristen Bell chipped her tooth on a pullout couch in her trailer while filming the 2005 Showtime movie musical adaptation. Although the actress wanted to repair the tooth with superglue and continue filming, Fickman insisted she go to a professional.
Fickman also revealed that movie was made under the caveat that they film on the same Vancouver, Canada set previously used for the pilot of The L Word (2004-2009). The director...

A new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series has just been released, and with this one we’ve decided to take a look at one of the most unpopular entries in one of the horror genre’s biggest franchises. It’s the 2010 A Nightmare on Elm Street remake (watch it Here), a.k.a. The One Without Robert Englund, and you can hear all about it in the video embedded above.
Directed by Samuel Bayer from a screenplay by Wesley Strick and Eric Heisserer, the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake has the following synopsis: Teenagers Nancy, Quentin, Kris, Jesse and Dean are all neighborhood friends who begin having the same dream of a horribly disfigured man who wears a tattered sweater and a glove made of knives. The man, Freddy Krueger, terrorizes them in their dreams, and the only escape is to wake up. But when...

To say the Terminator timeline is pretty confusing at this point would be an understatement. The franchise, created with the release of James Cameron's seminal 1984 effort "The Terminator," has since been softly rebooted, retconned, and generally mishandled by successive generations of studios and filmmakers. So twisted is the saga's internal timeline that watching the "Terminator" movies in any kind of coherent order has become a challenge not unlike trying to destroy the T-800 himself.
Prior to the release of 2019's "Terminator: Dark Fate," things seemed to be looking up. With the help of James Cameron on producing duties, director Tim Miller decided to forget the three lackluster films that followed the modern classic that is 1991's "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" and simply pick up where that stellar entry in the franchise left off. Unfortunately, when "Dark Fate" debuted we were treated to yet another generic action blockbuster that put...

Bryan Fuller, the creator of shows including “Hannibal” and “American Gods,” was accused in a lawsuit on Wednesday of sexually harassing a fellow producer on an AMC docuseries about queer horror.
Fuller is accused of making constant references to masturbation, engaging in casual bullying, and creating a hostile work environment. The plaintiff, Sam Wineman, alleges that Fuller also repeatedly held him from behind to “crack his back,” during which he would press his penis against Wineman’s buttocks.
Fuller and Wineman are both gay. They worked together on the series “Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror,” a four-part docuseries that was released on AMC’s Shudder streaming service in 2022.
Wineman alleges that he was removed from the project in August 2021, about four weeks after complaining about Fuller’s conduct.

John Carpenter is hands down one of America’s greatest filmmakers and composers, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a horror geek that doesn’t adore at least one of his movies. As the decades flew by, he was at the helm of some of the most beloved sci-fi and horror pictures of all time, whilst also composing the music for most of them, including the iconic scores for Halloween and Escape from New York.

We spent July discussing gender in a myriad of ways: cross-dressing serial killers in Insidious: Chapter 2 and Psycho, as well as trans representation in Escape Room: Tournament of Champions. To keep things in theme, we’re closing out the month with a look at Joshua Grannel‘s (aka drag queen Peaches Christ‘s) 2010 horror comedy All About Evil, which is currently streaming on Shudder!

We see recasts pretty regularly on the big screen. For some franchises like Friday the 13th and Halloween, it’s almost a tradition. It’s less common in a non-genre arena. However, other major films have seen some of their important characters get recast for various reasons. Here are a few of them:
Back to the Future: George McFly and Jennifer
Two roles were recast in Back to the Future: Part II. The first recast was that of Jennifer who in the first film is played by Claudia Wells and then in the sequel is played by Elizabeth Shue. Not only did Shue replace Wells in the sequel, but all the flashback scenes to the first film were re-shot with her to make it make sense. The recast here was due to Claudia Wells taking a break from acting to go take care of her mother who had been diagnosed with cancer.

There are many songs that Paul McCartney based on things he read in literature. His parents instilled a love of knowledge and learning in him when he was a kid, and his English teacher at school fostered that love. Paul developed an admiration for writers like Lewis Carroll and Shakespeare. However, many authors and writers’ work ended up in Paul’s songs.

In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul spoke many times about his literary heroes, which included Dylan Thomas, Oscar Wilde, Allen Ginsberg, French symbolist writer Alfred Jarry, Eugene O’Neill, and Henrik Ibsen. However, a couple of his songs wouldn’t have shaped up the same way without the influence of Shakespeare.
Paul wrote that he’s “fascinated by the couplet as a form in poetry,” particularly how Shakespeare used the couplet to close out a scene or an entire play.

Paul McCartney won’t rule out that he was craving a “comfortable feeling” when he wrote The Beatles‘ “Golden Slumbers.” He retreated to the calming safety of his father’s home in Liverpool during a tense time for him and the band.
Paul McCartney who wrote The Beatles’ ‘Golden Slumbers’ | John Rodgers/Redferns Paul McCartney ‘sampled’ an old Victorian song based on an Elizabethan poem on The Beatles’ ‘Golden Slumbers’
In The Lyrics: 1956 to the Present, Paul wrote that before it became a Beatles song, “Golden Slumbers” was first known as an old Victorian song. The original was based on an Elizabethan poem by the dramatist Thomas Dekker.
Paul found the words on a piece of piano sheet music when he was in Liverpool visiting his father, Jim. “Even then, I always looked inside the piano seat because a lot of people have their sheet music in there,” Paul wrote.

Little Dixie is a thriller movie directed by John Swab starring Frank Grillo. With Eric Dane and Annabeth Gish.
Frank Grillo impersonates a man that navigates between two seas and between borders, a classic anti-hero who due to the circumstances has to become a hero to save his daughter, Little Dixie, whom the movie is named after.
This is a movie of black and white contrasts with grey areas in which everything happens in dark tones with even darker characters. This film which has its source in the construction of classic cinema to, in a authentic and brutal style, destroy and separate itself from its genre.
In this film, the director, John Swab knows how to impose his own style.

Paul McCartney drew inspiration from many different sources as a songwriter. It is a technique he still employs over 60 years after starting his music career. However, the ideas for some of Paul’s songs came from unlikely origins, including a 1789 poem published by Elizabethan poet Thomas Dekker that he used to write a climactic Abbey Road song.
Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, and John Lennon | Keystone-France/Gamma-Rapho via Getty Images Paul McCartney is a very pragmatic songwriter
Of all The Beatles, Paul takes a very pragmatic approach to songwriting. He viewed it as a job, a means to an end to a new song. It was an approach he used when first writing songs with John Lennon.
“If I were to sit down and write a song, now, I’d use my usual method: I’d either sit down with a guitar or at the piano and just look for melodies,...

"Don't look so shocked. Naive doesn't look good one you." Paramount Movies has unveiled an official trailer for an action crime thriller titled Little Dixie, another of these useless direct-to-video action / crime films they're churning out way too often these days. Ex-Special Forces Operative Doc facilitates a fragile truce between the Governor and Cartel, trading prosecutorial leniency for finance. With no more truce, Doc is left to fend for himself and protect the one untainted thing in his life: his daughter, Little Dixie. So uh, does that sound interesting to anyone? The film stars Frank Grillo, Eric Dane, Beau Knapp, Annabeth Gish, Peter Greene, Thomas Dekker, Mercedes Mason, and Maurice Compte. Yeah this definitely looks as forgettable as it sounds. As much as I used to enjoy Frank Grillo, he is now doing way too many of these boring action flicks and always playing the same character over and over.

With the majority of prestige television being released on streaming services and cable networks with no content restrictions, nudity from famous actors and actresses has become commonplace. To many, it is no longer shocking to see their favorite stars strip down on screen. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be daunting for the performers themselves.
Diane Kruger, who stars in the new television remake of “Swimming with Sharks” on the Roku Channel, recently opened up about her experience filming nude scenes on the show. As an actress, her approach is generally to avoid nude scenes unless there is a specific artistic justification.

But the spotlight unexpectedly became much brighter in 2017 when former “Heroes” co-executive producer and writer Bryan Fuller outed Dekker during a speech at Outfest. While Fuller didn’t mention Dekker by name, he talked about a gay actor on the show whose character was also gay until the actor’s team insisted he be straight. It didn’t take long for people to figure out who he was referring to.

“Power is a dangerous, delicate creature,” Kiernan Shipka’s character tells us in voice-over as she zips up her dress. “Intoxicating. And fickle.” These are the sort of truisms that “Swimming With Sharks,” a new Roku Channel original series, doles out with a heavy hand — ponderous enough to obscure that there’s little new on offer here.
The show, an update of the 1994 drama about a tyrannical studio executive and his ambitious assistant created by Kathleen Robertson, doesn’t have much interesting to say about, say, the dynamic between higher-ups and underlings in Hollywood, its putative topic; its gender-flipping its two leads (the exec is now played by Diane Kruger) seems to have been done solely to generate a sense of scandal in the sexual tension between the two. That gets at just how un-2022 this series feels: It gawks at women in power who are drawn to one another...

Oh, what hatred of a toxic boss can drive you to do.
Kiernan Shipka stars as bright-eyed intern Lou Simms, who starts her apprenticeship at Hollywood production studio Fountain Pictures to learn from the best of the best, CEO Joyce Holt (Diane Kruger), in “Swimming with Sharks.” Yet Lou’s dreams of stardom seem to come with a darker edge as her complex plot against Joyce unravels. It was no accident that Lou was selected to join Fountain Pictures, and she’s going to do more than just get her feet wet in the secrets of the studio.
Part “The Assistant,” part “All About Eve,” the Roku Channel original warns that “proximity to greatness is intoxicating”…and deadly.
“Swimming with Sharks” debuted its trailer during Roku’s first-ever SXSW event. The series is set to premiere on April 15, with all six 30-minute episodes streaming for free on The Roku Channel.

“You have no brain. No judgement calls are necessary. What you think means nothing. What you feel means nothing. You are here for me. You are here to protect my interests and to serve my needs.”
That’s the iconic line spewed by a toxic movie producer to his rattled assistant in “Swimming With Sharks,” the 1994 George Huang film. Within the industry, the movie has been referenced as hyperrealistic and the subject of many inside jokes. Today, however, Variety can exclusively reveal the first trailer for a full-stop reboot of the property from creator Kathleen Robertson.
A flagship original from Roku, the current “Swimming With Sharks” brings two forces to be reckoned with in Diane Kruger, the take-no-prisoners studio chief, and Kiernan Shipka, her cunning intern who will stop at nothing to become her professional idol. Gritty, psychological scripted drama “Swimming With Sharks,” starring Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger, will debut on The Roku Channel this April. The leads were previously announced back in February 2020, when the series was previously under Quibi. Donald Sutherland, Ross Butler, Thomas Dekker, Finn Jones, Erica Alexander and Gerardo Celasco also star alongside Shipka and Kruger.
“Swimming With Sharks” will feature six half-hour episodes. Kruger (“In the Fade”) will play Joyce Holt, studio head of Fountain Pictures, while Shipka will play Joyce’s intern, Lou Simms, who develops an extreme obsession with her boss. The show follows the great undertakings Lou — who is anything but a naive newcomer to the industry — will go to get closer to Joyce.
“Historically, Hollywood has always represented reinvention, rebirth. Starting over. There has never been a better time to embrace that” said showrunner and creator Kathleen Robertson in a statement. “My goal was to subvert...

Roku will release Quibi’s reboot series of Swimming With Sharks, starring Diane Kruger and Kiernan Shipka, this spring.
The Lionsgate-produced series is written and produced by Kathleen Robertson, and directed by Tucker Gates, with Chris Cowles and Liz Destro also executive producing.
Set to make its Roku debut in April, Swimming With Sharks follows Lou Simms (Shipka), an intern at Fountain Pictures. She seems like a naïve Hollywood newcomer, awestruck by the studios’ notorious CEO, Joyce Holt (Kruger). In truth, Lou has done extensive research on Joyce and landing this internship was no happy accident. As Lou’s obsession grows, she will do anything to get close to her idol.
Swimming With Sharks touts six 30-minute episodes and also features Donald Sutherland, Thomas Dekker, Finn Jones, Erica Alexander, Ross Butler and Gerardo Celasco. Stephen Israel, Jay Cohen and Dana Brunetti also serve as executive producers.

A “Terminator” anime series has been ordered at Netflix, Variety has learned.
As the project is still in the early stages, plot details are being kept under wraps. Netflix has partnered with Skydance on the series, with Skydance having produced the last two “Terminator” films. The series is produced in partnership with Production I.G , who Netflix has had a production line deal with since 2018. Production I.G’s past anime credits include “Ghost in the Shell,” “B: The Beginning,” and “Eden of the East.”
“’Terminator’ is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time,” said John Derderian, Netflix’s vice president of Japan and anime. “The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before. We can’t wait for fans to experience this amazing new chapter in the epic battle between machines and humans.

Of all the dramas made about substance abuse, “Body Brokers” is the first I can recall about the “treatment industry” itself, that multibillion-dollar sector dedicated to helping hard-drug users kick the habit, and its conclusion is startling: Addiction is a veritable money machine for doctors, therapists and pharmaceutical companies alike, a substantial number of whom thrive not on recovery but on repeat business. The shadier among them rely on low-level recruiters, or “body brokers,” to keep the system supplied with souls in need of saving — or else just some easy cash.
A self-described former junkie who experienced the dirty side of going clean firsthand, writer-director John Swab delivers an entertaining and eye-opening insider’s take on the treatment racket. , Swab presents an Ohio homeless couple, Utah (Jack Kilmer) and Opal (Alice Englert), who reluctantly agree to detox at posh SoCal-based New West Recovery.
“So how much are they paying you?...

The last few years have seen a flurry of films designed to retcon away undesirable entries in long-standing franchises. 2016’s Blair Witch treated the events of Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 as a movie-within-a-movie as it continued the story of the 1999 independent film The Blair Witch Project; 2018’s Halloween ignored all nine installments in that franchise after the 1978 original; and this year’s forthcoming Candyman follow-up intends to ignore 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead, while Ghostbusters: Afterlife will disregard 2016’s franchise reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.
The most recent entry in this incredibly niche genre is 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, Tim Miller’s disappointing second directorial effort after 2016’s Deadpool. The sixth big-screen installment in James Cameron’s science-fiction franchise serves as a direct sequel to 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest sequels ever produced.

Miss Bala is the English language remake of the Mexican film of the same name, released in 2011, directed by Gerardo Naranjo. The 2019 remake is directed by Catherine Hardwicke and features Jane the Virgin star, Gina Rodriguez as Gloria. A character who is caught up in a deadly game between gangland Mexico and Us forces, who plant Gloria in the midst of gathering intel on the former or face prosecution in the Us by the latter. Miss Bala for the most part, is an enjoyable little action/thriller. It’s never completely riveting or mesmerising in what it offers but sticks to what it knows with Hardwicke strong behind the wheel.
Performance wise it’s a mixed bag overall.
