On the positive side, "Nobody Wants This" is a very stylish and clever show. Kristen Bell and Justine Lupe (Astrid on Mrs. Maisel) play sisters who host a sex and dating podcast, one similar to Call Her Daddy. Adam Brody is the newly single "hot Rabbi" who broke off a long-term relationship with Rebecca because he knew in his heart she wasn't the one. Kristen Bell's Joanne meets Adam Brody's Noah at a dinner party and their chemistry is instant. We watch their relationship develop over the series even though initially they have nothing in common (except they both have wealthy families) and are polar opposites. Noah is an honest, moral, straitlaced Conservative Jew who grew up aspiring to be a Rabbi. Joanne is a hip, modern, agnostic, freewheeling hot mess with a zigzag past. Noah and Joanne navigate multiple family and career issues that arise because of their relationship. The biggest hurdle they face, however, is that Joanne is not Jewish. Being with a "shiksa" causes his family great anguish and also puts his goal of becoming senior Rabbi at his synagogue in serious jeopardy.
It's a fun show to watch. The acting is phenomenal, the dialogue is witty. It's hysterically funny at times. The entire cast is fantastic with some endearing and charming characters.
The downside: Too many Jewish stereotypes to the point of it being almost a parody. It started out funny at times, but increasingly it felt more uncomfortable as the Jewish women characters were being portrayed as the villains while the blonde non-Jews were seen as the heroines. Also, Rabbi Noah is almost too perfect. He literally doesn't have a single character flaw. I feel that we didn't really get to know him or understand why he became so quickly invested in his relationship with Joanne.
Overall a good show. Looking forward to and fingers crossed for Season 2!
