Sol (Jean Hersholt) is a nice Jewish-American immigrant. He's so kind that when his good friend Officer O'Hara is killed, he takes in O'Hara's son, Shandy (Jackie Searl), and raises him as his own. However, Sol is also cursed with a terrible son. Joey is a brat and a thief...and again and again, Shandy steps in to help bail Joey out of whatever trouble he's gotten himself into. Why? Because Shandy loves Sol so much he'd hate to see him disappointed. Is there a positive end in sight or will Joey keep taking advantage of Shandy?

Jackie Searl was a good child actor who usually played bratty kids. However, here in "Hearts of Humanity" he is the good kid...and he's pretty good in this role except that he's supposed to be Irish....and his accent is pretty poor and often comes and goes during the film. It also didn't help that the script was so schmaltzy and rushed...and the ending came off as rather ridiculous. Overall, an interesting film which clearly couldn have been a lot better.
